Feminists attack PS3's Fat Princess

PSN game is "fat-hating" and reinforces nasty stereotypes, claim feminist blogs
Feminist gaming blogs across the internet have gone on the attack against cutesy PSN multiplayer game Fat Princess, which has been branded "fat-hating" and said to reinforce female stereotypes.

In case you missed it, 'Princess has two teams of 16 battle it out to rescue their princess from the opposing team's fortress, only the enemy's been stuffing her full of cake and it's now going to take most of your team to haul the tubby royal back to base. It's a clever twist on CTF, and looks bloody brilliant to be fair.

Blog Feminist Gamers doesn't agree, calling the PSN release "fat-bashing" and suggesting that it will "reinforce nasty stereotypes about women and the obese" when it's released on the PlayStation Network.

Fellow blog Shakespear Sister is even more angry. "Congrats on your awesome new game, Sony. I'm positively thrilled to see such unyielding dedication to creating a new generation of fat-hating, heteronormative assholes," she posted on her blog.

"I can't figure out is why anyone would want to rescue a fat princess in the first place, since everyone knows that fat girls are unlovable human garbage at whom any sensible bloke would sooner hurl invective than cast a longing glance," she adds (with sarcasm, perhaps).

"I sure hope there's a clever dénouement like the Fat Princess magically becoming thin once she's rescued! 'Cuz that would rock, yo!"

Calm down, girls. There's far, far better games for you to focus your hate on (cough, Soul Calibur IV).

Re-skin it as Athletic Prince. Everyone's a winner.

Seriously though, what stereotype is this conforming to? How many people are kidnapped and force fed cake for a laugh... whilst being a princess?
Acheron51 on 23 Jul '08
Some people need to find better things to do than trawl around looking for things to be offended by. Like posting stuff on message boards Laughing
beef946 on 23 Jul '08
doesn't make sense to me. Players are *rescuing* a fat princess.

Rescuing.

Its not like they're leaving her to her fate because she's fat, or something.
berelain on 23 Jul '08
I suppose telling them to "get pretty, or f**k off" won't help then?
*Bosker* on 23 Jul '08
Perhaps Sony can add an element whereby, once rescued, the bingeing Fat Princess goes to the toilet and sticks her fingers down her throat. Surely that would appeal more to the girls?

Sorry.
Havoc72 on 23 Jul '08
Games are usually blamed for making people fat, but now they are complaining that they make gamers hate fat people. Games just can't win Wink

Seriously though I already hate fat people, they make me feel ill just looking at them, the same goes for anorexics and smokers to be honest (Anyone that looks grossly unhealthy or smells or even worse both!). This maybe the game that I buy a PS3 for, it seems right down my street.

Tubby feminists overreacting and attacking something perfectly harmless???!!

So whose the person stereotyping obese and females... from her quotes, sounds like its her???

Serioulsy get a life! There are far more important things to worry about then whether a game is enforcing "negative stereotypes" of women or fat people.... wonder if there would be outrage if it was a fat bloke?

Makes me p**sed off this sort of bull sh#t.

They've just gave this game a lot of free publicity and advertising. Even if the game it totally rubbish a lot of people will download it now just to see what the fuss is about.

philgreaaaaaaaat on 23 Jul '08

Heteronormative... Jesus, did she swallow a dictionary?

There's a cake-related punchline there I'm sure. Although I rather doubt she's ever seen a dictionary, because 'heteronormative' isn't in any dictionary worth it's name. It's one of those idiotic management speak made up words that are only used by people who think using words like that makes them sound learned and authoritative, when in fact it just reminds people of the phrase about empty vessels and noise.

The thing that actually amuses me though is the game kind of actually worships fatness. One of the best tactics in the game is surely to get your princess to be as fat as possible. And the object of the game (rescue the princess) remains the same regardless of the condition she's in. In essence, weightier princesses have a higher 'game value' than thin ones. A fat princess is desirable in ths game.

jonbwfc on 23 Jul '08
I don't see why the ramblings of a beached manatee have become news. Why do all feminists seem to conform to the fat and ugly stereotype anyway? Normal girls don't care about this stuff, but I suppose that's because they're attractive and popular rather than ugly and sullen. They have better things to be doing than sitting with their folds draped over a chair, stabbing at a sugar-laced keyboard with one hand while the other holds 4 burgers, and giving out about how Sony are responsible for people calling them fat.

Has anyone seen the photo she posted along with this blog entry? Brace yourself... I mean it. Brace. Yourself.

Never mind what these women are complaining about, who let them out the kitchen to use a computer?

Women in my household are locked in a basement and only released to fulfill their daily chores around my abode.

It is possible one could have quickly popped in to a Internet Cafe and covered her tracks by saying she was popping down to the shops to get a new duster and washing gloves.

I must introduce a tagging system to keep track of exactly where they are going.

They should be more concerned with a-holes like you and the typically chavvy term 'chick' you just threw about than stupid psn games. Way to give them a real reason to be feminists.

To be fair she has a point. Remember what happened when that little girl got called obese by Wii Fit? She's probably been in the bathroom with her fingers down her throat since, and we end up with another disgusting super model sized woman in our world.

I'm feminist, and I'm a gamer, but personally I don't have a problem with Fat Princess. Honestly it looks like it could turn out to be a great game, and considering there still aren't that many girl gamers in the world I doubt this'll have much effect. I mean it's not like it's on the Wii or anything. And I doubt many girls will get offended by this as long as the game is fun.

And she said herself it'd put people off obese people, but isn't the whole objective the complete opposite?

You may have a point but still, think before you speak love Rolling Eyes

How about banning Santa Claus who stereotypes the jolly, fat man?
How about stopping the stereotype of black men having big dicks?

And since when do all men dislike the larger woman? I don't go for the stick-thin model types at all, I much prefer a woman with a bit of meat on her.

Maybe not, but there are people who bought a next gen console for a next gen experience, not to waste time and energy on stuff that would look out of place on the original PlayStation.

With all the power of the console why should we forgive crappy visuals when the gameplay is sound, why can't we have both?

I'm admittedly pretty naive about the whole feminist discourse but I can't help thinking that many feminist opinions I encounter are actually quite sexist themselves.

Back in the days when women were unable to vote I think protesting was the correct way to get attention and to make men realize that women are not these placid, subservient beings. However, in today's world women are able to go out and get good jobs and to all extents live a pretty self-sufficient life. I think people that moan about inequality often seem to be those that are underachievers or just won't accept that their failure is not down to the male gender - allowing of course for exceptions.

My boss is a woman and never once have I heard her moan about inequality. My little sister also earns slightly more than me and I have a pretty decent job. I think the time for words has passed and the time for action has come. If women want to be considered equal then they need to take the bull by the horns and actually go out and prove themselves. Granted, there are many chauvinistic blokes out there but if you really want to succeed you'd be unlucky not to.

Sorry for the rant but I'm pretty sure that this thread wouldn't even be here if the game was called Fat Prince. And also, for every feminist bleating away on their blog there are a thousand townie slappers parading around in mini-skirts. I bet the woman who wrote that blog is like that chubster who went on Dragon's Den ranting about how she wanted to start a engineering college catering for women only - being such a male-dominated industry. Didn't take very long for Duncan Ballantyne to point out the obvious sexism in that idea.

I also would rather have great gameplay than great graphics (Obviously both would be ideal). However I am of the opinion that sometimes a simpler graphical style can work wonders for the playability of a game and the atmosphere is creates. Also Screenshots have a habit of making a game look less good that it really is when moving.

Let me make it clear that I'm not on the side of the feminists here. Most feminists are horrible women, who try to disguise their hatred of men under the guise of 'campaigning for equality'.
The comments they have made in regards to this game are ludicrous.

I never really had a high opinion of those who post in the CVG forums, but the ignorance and offensiveness of the majority of posts in this thread was surprising to me.

Grow up, people. Being a t**t towards someone who has stupid opinons makes you just as bad as them.

You clearly don't understand you are wasting your money son! sorry i meant c**k!

Nice attitude, swearing is so grown up!

I don't have a PS3 so I think it is you who has wasted the money.........

I also would rather have great gameplay than great graphics (Obviously both would be ideal). However I am of the opinion that sometimes a simpler graphical style can work wonders for the playability of a game and the atmosphere is creates. Also Screenshots have a habit of making a game look less good that it really is when moving.

I haven't wasted my money at all, i've been spending it on games worth playing not some crap that loks like an amiga-port!

All i can say is if you ain't got a PS3 then why be on here commenting on PS3 games and digging out people's comments? get a life fool!

Oh and how is this for grown up... you f**king stupid pre-op c**t!

After reading this tedious argument, I think the only c**t on here is you monkeyjuice.

There's nothing wrong with fat girls.

More cushion for the pushin'!

I mean it. Brace. Yourself.

The middle finger to the camera helps give her that extra little touch of class. *shudder* What a grotesque human being. What a lumbering mass of pointless.

I've gone off on a bit of a tangent here, but she has really annoyed me. I find her argument and her appearance offensive, to my brain and my eyes respectively.
I'D tap dat. / super sarcasm
in reply to the topic , if i was ever to see a feminist in real life i would deliver this cold blunt statement. i think you know which one.........

Personally I think it looks f**kin' hilarious.

This argument just shows what happens when someone who has never played a game in their life is allowed to comment on this sorta thing. I'd say it's on par with people complaining about Resi 5 being racist... Rolling Eyes

I think they are just upset because Sony didn't call the game 'Fat Hairy Lesbian Princess'.
Mark240473 on 23 Jul '08
lol unless someone was commenting about it you cant get offended. if someone comented about it then that is obviously wrong. if someone didnt then you must think this yourself because i dont see people talking about this stuff unless people complain. either of these two ways ther are more things to worry about being insulted. seriously people are starving in africa and people are crying because somebody may or may not have been insinuiating that being a fat woman is wrong. seriously .... grow up
jamieh538 on 23 Jul '08
well whilst to a very minor extent there is some truth to the statement, it is pretty blunt and rude to call a game fat princess.

its also, f**king hillarious.

I can only conclude that society these days is too PC, and games like this are breaking the mould and making a stand for freedom of speach, or rather freedom to not have to dither around being a sensitive bitch to PR lawyers.

Fat Princess, I salute you! (and your enormous flaps)

Fat pepole have themselfs to blame you ate all the pies not me,as for skinny ones who starve for perfection in who's eyes is beauty the holder off.Look if you want to start a war go away gamers play usually bythemselfs or in a group of like minded individuals,They might be fat, skinny, pale, brown, stupid, geniues, murder, ecogod what ever the thing i like most is we dont go around saying all kinds of crap to wind up pepole, these individuals who take offence should go look at some degrading porn or something and thank god they are not the ones selling themselfs for cash. Some dont have a choice of the crap they live others choose to live like that so let them and leave gamers to live there lives how they want to.F!@#$ing dicks go and pick on the goverment oil companys your landlords or anyone else who you hate. Twisted Evil
Domin666 on 24 Jul '08
Define irony: A group of either anger confused or well meaning girls/ women take your pic, atempting to disband female stereotypes but somehow comforming to feminist stereotypes. After this rant i have an image of an overweight homosexual girl with peircings and short hair in my head, not because thats what I think all feminists look like but because thats what they'r complaining about. And FYI girls most of what you said goes both ways, find something that actually is and was intended as discrimination and I'll be on your side...maybe.
rak49 on 24 Jul '08
This game would make much more sense if the King (i.e. the Princess'e father) offered her weight in gold to be rescued, the fatter she is, the more gold you make!
DemonHunt on 24 Jul '08
LOL - has anyone else noticed that all their bitching about stereotyping has done is make people be more sexist.... Bunch of dumb fat slags Laughing

As a feminist, I've got to say the views on what a feminist is like here, are so off the mark. I'm not overweight, I'm not a lesbian, and I don't hate men. Those with more extreme views, might be more vocal, but they don't speak for every feminist out there.

I don't see anything wrong with the concept of this game though. If anything, it actually looks pretty unique, even if it's not something I'd normally play. If the game does end up making fun of large women, then yeah, They might have a point, but until then I can't see any evidence that it's doing that.

To be fair she has a point. Remember what happened when that little girl got called obese by Wii Fit? She's probably been in the bathroom with her fingers down her throat since, and we end up with another disgusting super model sized woman in our world.
A shame, isn't it?

seriously tho, if these bull-dykes spent more time on a treadmill and less time hating the world throgh their keyboards maybe they would get some action and chill the f out.

First of all, yes, you're right of course that we have all happily jumped on the word "feminist" and any bigoted connotations...

However, what bothers me here, is that surely if the "offensive" part of this game is the fact that the game parody's weight, rather than sex, then surely it should be the overweight rallying against it, not the feminists. Sound like a little "bandwagon" action going on here!
Random Hangman on 28 Jul '08
Being over weight is unhealthy and can lead to an early death, but thats ok, its now so normal we should all just accept it. Great.
Bothanspy on 26 Aug '09
It's only sexist or fat bashing because of the way they interpret it. I'm pretty sure the people who bought and play this game just think that it's a bit of fun, let's be honest it wasn't exactly going for the most realistic game in the world ever award was it. These feminist should go suck a....
