"That makes good headlines, but I don't actually know that that's the true nature of the business that we're all in, whether it's PlayStation, Xbox or the Wii," Hirai told Times Online.
"I think the better indicator is to look at the business as a whole platform, to ask: are you profitable in terms of the hardware, software and peripherals. And the answer to that question is yes on a gross profit level since the last fiscal year."
Hirai also said the death of physical media won't happen for a while yet, and UMDs are here to stay. "We're in over 100 countries and there are areas where consumers still don't have access to the type of broadband that we have.
"The death of physical media is a very nice conclusion, that seems to be nice to say, but it's not something we're going to see soon. We are committed to the PSP 3000 and the UMD business."
This is just PR talk. Saying that they are losing money sounds like they care about the consumer. They probably don't make money on the machine, but they do make money from game sales. It has been the same with almost every other console that has ever been made, except for (or so i'm told) the Wii.
I'd say its worth the extra £80. Considering that you can pick up most of the better / older exclusives at rock bottom prices.
managed to get hold of Uncharted, MGS4, Heavenly sword and Resistance for £30 for the lot at my local game shop. Blockbusters have had some pretty good deals on recently too.
You never know altitude2k, more games that come out may take your fancy and then you have bases covered. But if on the whole your gaming needs are taken care of, I'd save the £80 and get a standalone BR player...
I've noticed a lack of comments on news articles this week. Everybody taking time off from posting?
I am very tempted by this @ Shopto for £230 on preorder. It's price puts it well in the region of "impulse buy".
Problem is I can only see myself using it for a couple of games (namely LBP and Wipeout) - I really only want the Blu-ray player.
What does anyone think? Should I get this or save myself about £80 and get just a stand-alone BR player?
I guess it really depends on how much you want to play LBP and Wipeout.
Probably not £80 worth to be honest! I think my question more revolves around how good it is as a BR player compared with some of the cheaper stand-alone players.

It sounds to me like you are not interested in the PS3 as a games console, so it was a bit of a silly question really.
The PS3 is excellent as a standalone Blu-ray player, if you just want that. Several years on, it still beats most others in terms of playback quality. The only better ones, in my experience, have been the expensive flagship models that the major electronics companies sell, which can be upwards of £300. The sound can be a bit of a pain to get going properly, but it is still great. And, if anymore exclusives do come out that take your fancy, then you can always play them

Get a standalone BR player.
Not at all. If it works better than most BR players (which the original PS3 did - being one of the only ones that could update to profile 2.0) then I'll fork out the extra. Plus I'll get the added bonus of playing the few exclusives I would like to play. Otherwise, if I can get a stand alone player that works just as well but is considerably cheaper then I'll just do that.

Nice BS! It's common knowledge to AV types that the the PS3 has not been the best Blu ray player since profile 2.0 and firmware-upgradable stand-alones have been on the market. For the past 18 months you have been able to buy a better Blu ray player than the PS3 for less than £200 and now for little over £100.
well last time i checked both machines games catalogues are 90% identical.
So it has games. unless i can't play Fallout 3, Bioshock,COD (for those that like it), resi5, Deadspace, The Orange Box, GTA IV, Arkham asylum and many others on the PS3 as well as the 360.
It basically comes down to which exclusives you prefer. I like em all so i own both. greedy i know but hey i'm a gamer.
It works perfectly well as a Blu ray player. It's also really good at playing video files too, Much less picky than the 360 can be.
Thats good to know. I really have little interest in Blu ray, for now, but it's good to know that I won't have to buy a standalone one, like with DVD and the PS2.
I think what he means is that Sony make a loss on PS3 harware in the US but that is evened out because they like to f*** us europeans over with a much higher price point (about £35-40 over inc.vat)

I'll not even start into the games you're missing out on but even just as Bluray player the PS3 is a massive bargain. This Panasonic bluray player just about has more features than the PS3.

I was going to suggest maybe getting one for the fact that you'll be able to update it in the future (if any new updates come out), and the games will always be a plus. Or you could wait a couple of weeks or so to see if retailers bring down the price of the original PS3 or see if you can find a PS3 Slim cheaper than the RRP to save yourself a bit more than £80.
I have a Ps3 i can 1)play games on it. 2)watch blu-ray on it. 3)browse 'grown up' web sites on it. 4)sort my mp3/other storage devices on it. 5)play cod 4 online for free on it. Worth paying a little more for than a 'stand alone' don't you think?
To whoever asked if he should buy one...I have no hesitation in recommending you do! It is excellent as a Bluray player (But I would recommend buying the official remote for 15 quid to go with it, feels much more natural when used to watch movies), excellent for a games machine and generally very good as an 'entertainment' centre. At £230 at Shopto is a great price, you can't go wrong!
If, however, you already have a Xbox 360 or a Bluray player then it probably wouldn't warrant a buy as you can buy either for £150 ish as aposed to the £230 for a Playstation...Um...
Ultimately, it's your own decision but I say go for it!
P.S. Fao: Wheresmymonkey. Am I sensing that you're attitute is softening towards your Sony machine?!?!? I've seen a fewer hostile comments about the phat black box lately from you!
Am i the only one here who would love to see a new manhunt game on next gen id say it wud be st!t hot the cheated the world out of a proper manhunt 2 uncut version i had to torrent to get it i demand manhunt 3 who,s with me

It's only worth it if you want to do all those other things.

I might be becoming less millitant in my old age. I still don't see the who ha about Blu ray. It did make ghostbusters look prettier though.
What the fight really comes down to is whther you prefer Halo or Killzone. I'm a Halo man through and through.
Doesn't mean a guy can't enjoy a lil Folklore and Uncharted though.
the fight between the PS3 and the 360 is getting increasingly pointless in my mind. My main beef with the PS3 was the fact that it cost alot to give you relatively little extra. the dash is still a mess and PSN still sucks balls but at least your not getting charged over the odds to find int out.
I have to agree with you on that one Monkey. I find going on to the PSN store a bit of a chore to be honest and txing is a pain too. Xbox online has the advantage of having millions of pounds every year paid into their coffers from the online subscriptions and will obviously be more polished (And better to use), but would I subscribe if Sony started charging to improve PSN? Probably not, so I won't complain too much!
@ Altitude2k. Of course I want to do these things,that's why I own a ps3 and not a 360 or a wii!(anymore).Each to thier own and all that b******s,for my personal requirements I choose a Ps3.It's my preference-that's all!
