Many of you will know the 8800GT as the card which offers GTX-rivalling performance for mainstream money.
What you might not realise is that the Radeon HD 3870 matches it in most areas, and that its cheaper 256MB version is barely able to keep pace at higher detail levels. If you've dashed out and bought one in the sales, you might want to swap it for the 512MB model tested here.
Benchmarks show that this GT has the measure of the high-end old guard, but what the numbers don't reveal is how much easier it is to live with - thanks to a single slot design, being slimmer than the rival Radeon, being whisper quiet, and you won't need more than a 400W power supply unit. This card really does make the GTS model redundant.
The one thing to consider is that the ATI card is cheaper, more plentiful, and just as quick.
This is news? The eVGA GT has been out since october. I've been using it since then.
And no, you won't need anything much higher than 450w (not 400 as you said here) but you will need 26amps on the 12volt rail. My old 500w PS only had 20amps on the 12v rail.
Anyway, they're cracking cards, but this GTX rival stuff is actually b******s. The higher the resolution the more this card suffers. For example: Crysis ran great at 1024, but suffers at 1680.
errr... yeah. I've been running an Inno3D GT since december... ? Don't understand how this has just arrived as news?
Anyway - excellent cards, especially considering at the time the one I bought was half the price of the GTX.
However Be careful of lower wattage PSU's - I put a 8800GT in my flatmates PC (along with a 6400+ CPU) last night and immediatly blew up the 400w PSU he had - literally.
Also - get a clocked one if you can - saves you haveing to try and do it yourself and there is a considerable difference, especially as there is a bout £15 difference in price...
Pc zone is full of s**t. My friend has a Gt and i have a GTS. There is no different until he trys to run a game over 1200 resolution on a 19inch screen, so no it does not compare unless you are on a budget. They completly failed to mention that GTS can easily run at higher res easily and by no means is redundant. I wish these mags would think about what they are saying before publishing
dude u seen my rig i had a 8600 gts but still agree a 8800gts would floor this bitch. i find 1440x900 a must these days...19"!!!!!!! make the most of it
