New DSiWare initiative to rival PSP minis?

Nintendo to encourage more digital titles
Nintendo is said to have cooked up a new initiative to encourage greater development of digital titles for its DSiWare platform.

Shortly after Sony unveiled its PSP minis initiative, which lowers the barriers of entry for small developers looking to make bite-sized games for the handheld, Nintendo is reportedly about to launch something similar.

While the current DSiWare pricing structure of 200, 500 and 900 Nintendo Points ($2-$9) will be retained, Nintendo will charge royalty rates to be paid by developers based on the size of their game downloads, according to Pocket Gamer.

'For example, a game that costs 500 Points will have to be smaller than 20MB or the royalty rate payable to Nintendo will be significantly more expensive. In this way, Nintendo can encourage developers to price larger games as premium content, while simpler puzzlers can go out cheap,' says the report.

Sony's minis service will offer sub-100MB titles, with 15 available at launch on October 1 and more than 50 releases planned during 2009.

Meh I wish nintendo released dsi virtual console first, they sure are taking their sweet time aren't they. I wouldn't care exept I missed out on a lot of gba games so I wished they'd hurry up.

Add Gameboy, GBA, and Sega Gamegear to the DSi download service and they would have won already.

Precisely.

Virtual Console = Incredible Win.

I agree, Virtual Console on DSi is number one on my most wanted list at the moment.

Only issue with 50 PSP mini titles planned by the end of 2009? That's a lot of gumf. Has anyone ever heard of quality over quantity?

I won't download any DSi games apart from the free 1000 points I got with the console, as what happens if I lose the console or decide to buy another colour? The games stay with the console, unlike PSP where they are linked to the account..

For instance, I've had a PSP-1000, 2000 and 3000 and I'm getting a PSP-Go, all my PSP downloaded games will work fine.

I've had the 'fat' DS, then 3 DS-Lites and now have a DSi, but I won't be buying any more DSi's or games online until they setup accounts - I know the Wii is the same but that is different partially as its a home console.

Whinge over!
