Gran Turismo 5 Hands-on

It's demolition time
It's been delayed so much, we almost didn't believe it when we discovered that Gran Turismo 5 - NOT Prologue, but the actual sequel - was playable on the Gamescom show floor.

Playable it was though, albeit a very particularly stingy demo with just a single car and track to try. But it did give us a sneaky peak, for the first time, at actual car damage in a Gran Turismo game.

The course we played is a new track set in Tokyo. It starts off in densely urban city street before branching out into a visually pleasing rural area, with trees lining the track casting gorgeous shadows down on the tarmac and shiny cars - which all looks as brilliant-clean as they did in GT5P.

Of course, the first thing we did was take out shiny motor - the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRC - and slam it into the nearest wall just to see what would happen. Not a lot, is the disappointing answer.

Considering creator Kazunori Yamauchi's constantly touted commitment to realism, we were expecting a pretty drastic reaction from the car - scrapped-off paint, realistic dents, shards of metal sent flying. Need for Speed: Shift, basically.

Instead what we got was little more than the familiar GT thud, and were hard pressed to see the damage we'd caused. The bodywork was slightly bent out of shape, but nothing major considering the near 200kph impact.

We did, however, manage to get bumpers hanging off, doors swinging open and even got the bonnet to fly open. Dents covered the car, but again they were way too smooth - there's just not enough paint damage in there. Hopefully there'll be an option to set how sensitive your car is to crashing.

After a few solid shunts our car was struggling to get over 140kph, so we'd clearly caused technical damage too. A Sony rep also told us that crashing too much could result in terminal damage ending our race early, which is great because that'll stop those cheating twits from bouncing off walls to get faster lap times.

Talking of bouncing off walls, we managed to wreck a few tyre walls and bollards too, sending them flying onto the track, which was another fun first for GT.

Having a poke around on the main menu, nothing else was playable, but we saw the expected GT Mode which, in the full game, will no doubt be where the meat of the game lies. Further along was a Theatre mode, where we guess you'll be able to watch and possibly edit replays. A Status option too, we guess, will let you track your driver stats and the like. Again, nothing was selectable.

And that was pretty much it - it's Gran Turismo with mild damage. Obviously it looks and plays as you'd expect from Gran Tursimo; silky smooth and a real sense of weight on the cars as you throw them into bends.

But what make GT stand out are the billions of customisable options and technical upgrades the series lets you do to your cars, and that's sadly something Sony's still not ready to show.

And as we leave the stand a fellow Euro journalist approaches. "Is this GT5?" He asks. We nod.

"FIVE, not Prologue? F**K," he added, before plonking his happy rear down to play. Sony, you clearly didn't shout too loudly about your flagship racer, did you?

The Tokyo track was in GT4, if I am not mistaken. There was definitely a Tokyo track because I remember it being one of my favourite lap-time tracks.

Have any of you guy's actually played a Playstation game before? Your knowledge leaves a lot to be desired.

Mind you, I bet you know the names of every corner of every track on Forza.

Oh, and you forgot to mention the eyetoy head-tracking option, unlike every other website out there.

Good preview.

Not.
Posted by English Shmuppet
So basically Sony have offered scant improvement over the prologue in all this time! :|

Gonna be more of an epitaph for them if they're not careful!
Posted by dangermou5e
Rubbish game defended by sad fanboys. Chaps there's much more out there you just need to take those rose tinted specs off
Posted by gogo65uk
Think I will stick to motostorm 2  Don't even mention the xbox racers I don't care .... its a gears of war machine nothing more.

I dunno what kind of preview this is but it leaves a helluva lot to be desired

it is more like a blog on someone's thoughts one day with the conversation at the end to add insult to injury

in fact this is terrible I usually look forward to read these but this one left me cold: no mention of all the features, the car-count, vastly improved graphs, track-count (you're better off reading my preview I posted the other day)

Yeah, very good, except for the pointless and unnecessary remark regarding Fable 3.

Why don't you grow up and stop being such a tool.
Posted by Black Mantis
Why are you guys bitching?! It's just someone's thoughts on a very brief demo of a game that carries a lot of hype and expectation, he even stated the best part wasn't available to play. I admit, it does sound as if the damage mode is a bit whack and doesn't improve on what other racing games have done years ago, but at least they've put it in.

There will be more hands-on previews with the full game closer to release and then you'll probably get better opinions about the game. If anything, Polyphonic are to blame, as they should've provided a better demo for this major title.
Posted by roynluc
The Tokyo track was actually in GT3, so not a new track at all.
Posted by Mark240473
A major title deserves a better preview. Every other website managed to come away with countless facts and figures regarding GT5. More importantly, they seemed more optimistic about the game than Mike, which shouldn't surprise anyone who frequents this site.

Well he did post that in an article about Fable, so for Suiv is was relatively on topic.

What do people expect from this? They had one car and one track to race on, and couldn't select any options. As a hands on preview, this is about all you can expect from it.

And anyway, it's the fifth version of a bloody car game that goes for realism, that loads of people (for somer reason) really love. So they're hardly going to revolutionise the gameplay are they? Just more options and better graphics and some physics.

But then again the appeal of games like GT and Forza as 'system sellers' is beyond me, although obviously millions don't feel the same!!
Posted by Wilzy
Lets all be honest. That track has been around for EVER, and the other tracks they demonstrate are all old ones, must have taken them ages to think of these "new" tracks. I LOVE(d) GT series, but its SOO stale these days, more of a showroom of graphics and how to all drive in a line, why they cant figure out some decent AI, some chaotic AI? something other than stick to the line, give the "drivers" some personality, like 10 types of AI, mad bloke, cautous, vengefull mode, some help you to avenge another ai, over a series of races they all get to be more competitive with certain drivers for those points, give at least 2 driving lines, around bends anyways. As ALWAYS, drive down a straight, ourt brake, accelerate, REPEAT GT Style! if that dont work, BUY your way to victory! I'm not sure this is going to be purchased! We got Modern Warfare 2, Uncharted 2, AQssasins Creed 2 this xmas! GT NEEDS a refresh, I know I know, its GT, but, going from PS2 ver to this, itsw surprisingly similar just looks 100000x better, which isnt the be all and end all. Same trax, same cars, same ai, bargain bin purchase!
Posted by Black Mantis
As Ricflair explained and what I hinted at, this was going by an experience with what was available to play. If it sounds underwhelming, then surely the demo is to blame, is it not?
Posted by StonecoldMC
It always comes back to a bias, eh? I find it crazy that people frequent a site they dont trust :? .

There are many sites that are dedicated to the PS3 (and 360 & Wii), if you want to garner news, why not do it on a site you know you can 'trust' where you wont find anyone downplaying your favourite Games(s)?
Posted by Mark240473
It isn't bias, StonecoldMC. It is obviously a preview by somebody who isn't interested in the game, proven to be so by not knowing a previous well known track.

Bias only comes from owning one console.

Ring any bells?
Posted by milky_joe

Yeah, how dare they base an opinion on the actual demo rather than listen to the rep that was no doubt hovering around somewhere wittering on about what will be in the final game when it's eventually released, none of which anyone has actually seen of course...
Posted by Black Mantis
Exactly. If it's not bias, it's the fanboy arguments, makes me wonder why they come here as well. Personally, I find this site amusing and it's better than forums full of Americans who over-react at anything controversial (San Andreas/Ballad of Gay Tony anybody?).

Just because your beloved franchise takes the occasional hit doesn't make a site biased. Pretty sure CVG gave Killzone 2 a 9.7 too....
Posted by The_KFD_Case
Precisely. By the "sounds" of this article there wasn't a whole lot for them to report back on. The customizable features were not available to them and only one track not fully named yet with one car in the race. Anyone expecting an indepth review from that material is being unreasonable, IMO. Wait for the full review.
Posted by flash501
A bit disappointed that the damage isn't more severe (although it could be in the full game), but the most important thing is that damage will affect the performance of the car, I was worried any damage would be purely aesthetic. All it needs now is better ai for your competitors.
Posted by The_KFD_Case
Obvious is it? I didn't get that impression reading the article, so apparently it's not as obvious as you might like to think. I suspect it's got more to do with personal perception and dispositions than anything else.
Posted by StonecoldMC
I wouldnt say that owning one console made you biased, I will get a PS3 when I need too, that looks like being for God of War and Heavy Rain.

I think I can look at things subjectively and can see the good and bad points for both consoles but these are just my opinions, I wouldnt expect anyone to agree with everything I thought be it a Gamer on this site or a journalist writing an article.

Thats the beauty of it were all right in our own way, I tend not to let it get to me when I read something I dont agree with cause there will be plenty who disagree with me.

Anyway need to go now, try and stop all these bells ringing in my office  .
Posted by Mark240473
Er, I think you'll find that CVG gave Killzone 2 8.7. Not that it is relevant in any way, shape or form. Unless you are a fanboy, of course.
Posted by The_KFD_Case
»

You are correct regarding the 8.7 score for KZ2, however my perception of your tone is that you seem more than just a touch defensive. That path easily leads to fanboyism.
Posted by Black Mantis

I was well aware of that killjoy!
Posted by Nick33
Only a retard goes into GT5 expecting Need for Speed: Shift damage. This is about driving, not crashing. But you clowns wouldn't know that as you're to busy sucking 360's red flashing dick.
Posted by ricflair
The only things you seem to hear about these games are the stats. The numbers of cars, polygons, tracks etc. They've been reported elsewhere plenty of times. Although I'm sure if you ask they could just repeat the stats again for you to get all excited about.

Are people really complaining because he didn't know it was an old track? If they had said it was an old track you'd probably be complaining they were painting it as a rehash.

CVG's previews and reviews are never very in depth anyway. The internet is a mostly free resource, make use of it and if you can't find what you want here, then look elsewhere!
Posted by sweatyBallacks?
It is a poor preview, almost not worth reading as there are no details on the game.

So I may as well go to another site to get that informazione, which surely can't be CVGs intention?

Oh well, it is only a game...
Posted by eltonbird
It's not even trying to be a Preview. It's a hands on. Of a very limited demo.

There's no point rehashing the Sony PR. That wouldn't be a preview either.

A preview should be based on a sit down session with a near finished product, that's just not quite ready for review. This is not what CVG were afforded, so give them a break!
Posted by MrPirtniw
I seem to recall MGS4, Killzone 2, Uncharted, Resistance 2 and LBP all getting descent scores from CVG. They're only bias when it suits the fanboys.
And one car on one track isn't exactly going to be a lot of fun is it? Not much in the way to preview- it offers less than the prologue/demo version did so you can't blame them all that much.

I agree with you Ricflair- as far as GT5 is concerned the fans seem more interested in how many polygons are shuffling around the track or how realistic the shiny cars are.

As far as the underwhelming damage (so far- it could easily improve in time), this is the first time a GT game isn't a bumper car simulator so let's not be too critical! Forza 2's damage was ok and it definately impacted the driving but they could've done more with it (though that looks sorted for Forza 3 now).
Posted by feeg86
After waiting for this game since number 4, I can safely say what a great big crock of shite. Damage or no damage, this game makes out to be the most realistic racer out there, and its failed, again.

From the video, it looks like it has the same bouncy physics and the same AI that are on a fixed track, the two things they should have got rid of after years and years of development.

I'll be picking up Need for Speed Shift, as it looks to be more fun to play, which is why we play games, no?

After seeing that, I strongly think that the GT series has had its time.
Posted by pishers
its only a hands on with 1 car on 1 track so its hardly a preview. i'd be more inclined to think the writer is passing opinion on how little they got to use rather than a verdict on the full game.

i reckon a full preview is forthcoming and will give all the details needed but seeing as though it has no release date yet, unless i have missed it, this is seriously early info.

lets face it as well, this game doesnt need a preview or review as it will be very similar to 1,2,3 and 4.
Posted by feeg86
"lets face it as well, this game doesnt need a preview or review as it will be very similar to 1,2,3 and 4."

Thats just the problem, after #3, I think I wanted 4 to be ground breaking, when all's it was, was another itteration without any change, just a bigger car roster and come to think of it, the only reason I bought it was because it was GT.

Think its time to let GT die gracefully.
Posted by Leders
Lets face it, some will want to have GT5's babies, others will want to pour petrol on it and set it alight. Thats the world today. I'm willing to try it out, but it has to be better than that terrible effort of GT5: Prologue. That over hyped demo did nothing for me.

Is it just me or has that tyre screech been in there since the original GT?
Posted by Mark240473
For me, a racing game involves cars on a track, racing each other until somebody wins.

So come on, how would you make GT groundbreaking?

I'm all ears.
Posted by English Shmuppet
Hmmm, I do wonder if there's a sub-motive to this lack of damage implementation.

For example, would it really be a bad thing to give Sony fanboys the notion that you can drive a car into a wall at 200kph and only slightly dent it?

The world might be a better place if a few of them gave it a whirl....
Posted by feeg86
Mark, Perhaps 4 was a bad example, but by the looks of it, 5 seems to be following suit of the others. For starters if I had spent the last 5 years on a game, I'd want it to be a little more than a polished version of of the last. If you were the boss of polyphonic and this is all you'd have to show for the last however many years, you'd want to know that the hell happened.
Posted by feeg86
At last! Someone else agrees! Yes is the answer
Posted by Mark240473
Look, you obviously don't like GT and that's fine. However, for the legions of GT fans, like myself, any step forward for the series is good news. It doesn't have to come with groundbreaking features to be a good game.

I enjoyed GT4 because it was similar to 1,2 and 3 - and I loved each and every iteration. If they had changed the series roots, then I (and other GT fans) may not have appreciated it.

PD are trying to please the GT fans, and not fans of other racers.

Luckily, there are lots of GT fans, and the many GT specific fan-sites are proof of that.

I do agree about the tacky wheel screeching noise though.
Posted by museumsteve
well the video has put me off GT5, nothing has changed in the series. Great, it has some damage that isn't really that impressive is it. The preview says it restricted the car's speed, that's not really hard cos when he was cornering at 160kph it looked like he was doing about 50mph. The AI doesn't seem to have changed, and of course the track was in GT4..naff write up of a naff game.
I was always a massive GT fan until I really got into GT4 and realised they would never actually make an effort with things that matter, like interaction and AI as long as PS fans thought it looked awesome ;)
Posted by museumsteve
give it some AI..afterall it is the Real Drving Simulator.
Posted by GTCzeero
What the... these articles are the same as the ones on Gamesradar. I was hoping for other opinions on the game.
Posted by BIGAL-1992
I can agree with the mild damage in GT5. I've seen the video of damage in GT5 on gametrailers and it's disappointing. The bumpers, doors and hood get unhinged, but that's it. PD will have to really ramp up the damage to the cars to make it on a respectable level In my Opinion.
Posted by Fastcarrot
I really like the damage system in Race Driver: Grid, where every little bump caused visible damage. Although from this it doesn't look like being anything like that.
Posted by fanboy
Watch the video guys!!!

I think there's one reason why this hands on was written with a slight negative tone, the guy is CACK!! I think he got round one corner cleanly!

To be fair its difficult for him to really give a proper opinion if he's that much of a novice.
Posted by AKTIVATOR
WOW such negative comments!!! Kazzy always gives us a great racing game to play hes a perfectionist and a racing driver too so dont expect any thing less than greatness,,it takes along time to create a masterpiece and thats what we,ll get.

Must say a lot of comments here really make me chuckle. 8)

mark 240473, i was about to log off and saw your idiotic statement!aa games or watever u said deserve a gud review?so u want people to lie about there thoughts and opinions, man i bet the games companys either love or employ you!say it like it is!!
Posted by voodoo341
Where did he say AA games deserved a good review?
Posted by Mark240473
Pardon?
Posted by pishers
i agree, my point that was quoted was meant as people will buy the game no matter what because they have played the previous games and frankly dont want all that much change.

if gt was made 'ground breaking' it would need a complete re-design and no longer be gt, they would be better off creating a brand new ip.

gt5 will still be excellent, i have no doubt about that.
Posted by Conkers
Why is there only damage to the player controlled car? That’s a little odd.
Posted by Darth_Raiden
Tokyo R246 is the course, first appeared on GT3.

Yes it looks similar to GT4, but I don't care. I'll still buy it as I prefer racing sims over other types of racer.

A subaru rally car is a bit out of place on a circuit mind you.
