2009 Is The Year... id Return

Feature: Return of the (Car)Mack
Id Software practically invented the genres that would define the PC as a gaming platform. They started out with the first-person shooter in Wolfenstein and then followed that with online multiplayer in Quake.

It's difficult to think of another games company that established so many famous gaming names in such a short space of time, as id sped from Wolfenstein, to Doom and to Quake. But after producing three Quake games in just four years things went quiet. In fact, id have only released one game in the past nine years - Doom 3.

At long last they're on the verge of returning. Aside from building a new Wolfenstein, a Nazi-trouncing first-person adventure set in a semi-open Bavarian world in production at long-time collaborators Raven Software, they have two of their own projects in development.

The first is Quake Live, a straight re-make of Quake III Arena that's playable for free through any web browser. It's received a slight graphical upgrade, but it's almost the exact same game we loved ten years ago. The biggest difference - aside from that being free thing - is the inclusion of online leaderboards and matchmaking, letting you find an opponent who'll provide you with a challenge, while being able to measure where you rank amongst the Quake players of the world. Expect it to dominate office lunchtimes when it comes out of its extended beta.

The second is Rage, a Mad Max-inspired combination of wasteland racing and shooting. This is id taking their first steps toward the future. It's them attempting to merge their always next-generation tech with scope and ambition of design, by making a game that reaches beyond mere corridors. The big tech feature: massive gameworlds onto which id's artists can apply ludicrous levels of detail, plus a frankly extraordinary physics simulation. Early trailers show a series of catastrophic buggy crashes that demand to be replayed frame-by-frame.

It's been a long time coming, but it feels like id are back with a vengeance. They're the Guns 'n' Roses of games.

i hope they're not the Guns and Roses of games or the new wolfenstein, quake live and Rage are gonna be utter shit!

C'mon id! Please blow us away! I commend them if they're finally willing to foray into more open-ended gaming environments.

I like id but with Doom III their game didn't match their reputation.

The game was good, but nothing special. I was expecting it to be a landmark game like Doom even or Quake. It was far from that.

It also lost a lot of the character and otherworldliness of the original Doom's. It was too safe a direction id choose to represent the Doom universe and it just made it look like many other sci-fi shooters.

I am looking forward to Rage though.

Come on Id - the pc needs you! Epic sold out and im sure you will fill their gap easily

But what if they add DRM??? ;)

Doom 3 really didn't do it for me, to be honest I think that id are a bit up themselves, I mean, c'mon, 1 game in 9 years! They're living in the past, need to move over for erm...

Well, now that Free Radical and Factor 5 have imploded we've gotta wait for some new developer to fill the spot.

Id arent that retarded

id don't have much to do with Wolfenstein bar supplying the engine. I'm not certain that Raven Software are making the next Wolfenstein game alone as Pi Studios are also listed as working on it. So all id is offering since the woefully bad Doom 3 is a flash version of their last decent game and Rage, which doesn't look anything special.

Guns and Roses were okay, not my favorite.

Quake Live is shaping up great.

Rage on PC and PS3 are working great, the 360 we've had issues with space, but we'll work something out.

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOO CARESSSSSSSSSSSS its only going to be more doom 1 and quake 1 gaming with newer graphics

id are over rated assholes they couldnt innovate if they tried no doubt borring ased game play and no depth AS USUAL WITH THESE ONE TRICK PONY GAMES

Aren't these guys working on Doom 4 for all the platforms or am I mistaken? I thought we were looking at a 2009 release. It was one I was really looking forward to on the 360. Please don't tell me it's scrapped.

I love id games. I hope Rage still feels like an id game, while giving something new as well.

wonder what specs it will need ?

Then sadly I will add id to the list of companies whom I refuse to buy products from. I wasn't jesting when I said it's a non-negotiable point for me and I'd sooner take up knitting than capitulate.

It can't be the real Mack surely!?

I loved Doom 3 and I'm looking forward to seeing what ID can do with Rage.

Doom 3 and ressurection of evil expansion (dont forget ppl) are truely awsome and I really enjoyed playing them, along with all of the previous games. looking forward to thier new games as ID have always set the bar to a whole new level with every title to make it more enjoyable and anyone who is stupid enough to say they dont clearly has had thier head stuck up a horses arse for the past 20 years! :P

Doom 3 and its expantion were imo very good games not as good as HL2, plus i preferred quake 4 though and quake etw rocks. Although doom 3 with its detailed gfx engine really put atmosphere into the game. Its main let down imo was the lack of eminys on the screen at 1 time but that was to do with the gfx engine only allowing a limited amount of charcters due to performence issues.

I do wish that id would bring out a game similer to quake 2 in terms of gameplay and style, fast paste action with lots of fast small stroggs on screen at 1 time was brilliant. I played q2 a couple of years back when it came free with quake 4. Infact i played q2 and finished the main game b4 playing q4 it was that good :D
