It was the end years ago, I have no idea why this question is being dragged out. Valve develop for the PC and 360.
In other news, Insomniac and Sucker Punch have said "We are also independent though are just working with Sony". That's not meant to be a comeback, just a fact. Why is it the Valve question seems to pop up so frequently? There are still a fair few independent developers out there developing for one console, and I don't see the difference between Valve and all of the other developers.

Blimey, first I'd heard about it. I thought Gabe Newell loved the PS3, with it bearing so much similarity to the lean, mean, grilling machine.

I know alot of ps3 users say they don't care, but quite frankly, valve are one of the best studios around, and their games show it, the half life series is just amazing, and yes i own a 360 too, but if i had my way, Valve would develop exclusively for the PC, yeah it doesn't make much business sense, but it's where they belong, id also say the same about Infinity Ward and Id That's what I thought of L4D. Oh sh*t! These resources cost money, maybe if the PS3 would come down in price and get a larger install base he would feel justified in spending the money. The reason the question is always coming up is that Valve produce amazing games with great story lines. The orange box was brilliant(played on xbox) and left 4 dead i would love to play on the PS3 with free online. Yes PS3 has other developers for ps3 only but no one talks about their games as much as Valves. Plus to all you PS3 owners, GET A HEADSET sorted. Fed up playing in silence for team games. Maybe thats why Valve don't bother. I can't really blame him. The PS3 is a pig of a rig to get the best out of. Still, there're plenty of game to buy on PS3. I think Gabe would have to agree with you!
I'm surprised about Valve's position on this. In simplistic terms, why couldn't Valve set up a team, of those with experience, to work on Playstation versions of their games? Maybe they don't have the money, what with them being so small (!!!!being sarcastic!!!!). I think they're really saying that they don't feel they'd make enough money out of supporting the Playstation. I find this hard to believe to be honest. Surely, supporting the Playstation, making more money, could give them the extra finance to finish what all the Valve fans seem to want, episode 3! to Leaon452 I have a headset for my ps3 but if I play cod online (rarely) I never use itm seems cod players are mostly dicks. Any other game the community seem fine. really? great story lines? thats a first.
valve are good but get waaaaaaaay too much credit. hl2 was great but after that they seem to be super lazy. episodic gaming means you get more games in less time! with them you wait years to get a 4 hour game. now we get l4d which is a great game for the whole 4-5 hours it takes until it gets boring. why cant they push out a damn game tht actually has some lasting appeal? I've been playing L4D solidly for the last six months. Even when I've got something new, L4D has been back in the 360 pretty sharpish! And I know quite a few people are the same.
I'm not sure Valve's stories are that good, but the games play amazingly for me. Nm ...Valve games are better pc games anyways. wow 6 months!
despite all tht talk from valve the ai director doesnt bring any real variety to the maps. hordes always show up at the same place and unless you're on expert difficulty the game doesnt pose any challenge.
because of all that it would be like playing resident evil missions over and over and over again for 6 months on easy or smthg like tht.
of course there are people that love the game and continue to play it (same thing for every game) but every1 i know hasnt played it for more than 6hours because of the exact same reasons. its a good game but the credit it gets is beyond me. »

On a serious note though, what is keeping sucker punch or insomniac from doing the same exact thing? And why aren't they constantly in news articles similar to this one? At least with Valve you can also get their games on the PC, same can't be said for Sucker Punch or Insomniac. So if you have a gaming rig you're set then. Never mind PS3 owners, he should say sorry to all Half Life fans for the length of time it's taking Valve to finish Episode 3. Valve are probably in the top 5 game developers out there...
Look at the reviews of HL2, Portal and L4D.
Anyone who thinks they are not good is in a very, very small minority. Not sure if i'd play a new HL game on PS3 anyway. A new uncharted and new God of War appeal far more to me.
Maybe thats it, there are so many great games gearing up for release on PS3 (GT5, MAG, FFXIV, FFXIII vs, Heavy Rain, etc) maybe valve don't think they will have a good enough product to put up against the rest.

and if gears 3 will be announced u know tht will be a major game, those games u mentioned not many shops would open at midnight for mag or heavy rain like they would for a new gears game lol I'm not sure what it is I like so much, but the hordes don't always hit at the same time, sure there are certain set pieces, but who you are playing with varies the game a lot. Boomers can mix things up too!
For the first five months I didn't even touch versus, and versus games are different every time thanks to the constant supply of human controlled special infected, and the best AI currently out there can't match playing against humans.
It's very arcadey - relatively short bursts of play (an hour), and simple play (in fact I was slightly concerned that the new features in the sequel could hamper the simple game play). Plus I really do like co-op games. It is very satisfying when you do well as a team, covering each other and the like.
You need to play it for more than six hours. It will take you 4 just to go through the campaigns for the first time.
But I can understand it's not for everybody. Though comparing it to playing a level of resi over and over is massively misjudging the game in my opinion. Guns and zombies are all they have in common. Gameplay wise they're miles apart. I have commented in the past that i think its a great shame that valve haven't done any real work on the PS3. If the orange box was glitchy ,i didn't really notice it.Loved the product ,huge huge shame there's no more for the ps3.
I think it probably boils down to steam really,and the perceived closed nature of digital distribution on the ps3. however it is perhaps slightly narrow-minded, with how things are changing overall, the battle for the living room in its early stages,if you look at the amount of consoles sold in the current generation in comparison to the last generation then it is clear to see that most people haven't yet made up their minds and taken that leap into the new machines.
I would think the best approach would be to advertise for a team and look at Home, and do some fun projects,there are lots of independent producers doing cool things that would love to work with the alien architecture of the PS3 i would imagine,and the markets only going to get bigger for Sony (you dont need a crystal ball to see Microsofts next console in 2010 at about Ł300 and the ps3 retailing at about Ł129 or less at that time).
Anyway ,must say interesting that there has been a lot of whining about the left 4 dead sequel from your pc clients, i (and many other ps3 clients )would really love and appreciate even one version of left 4 dead, (and don't tell me that's too difficult to do on the ps3).

I think it's a shame PS3 only owners won't get to play it, it's a craacking game with masses of replayability. Everyone should be able to play it, perhaps it will if they find someone a bit more adept at converting it than whoever did the Orange Box. @ only777

what i was trying to say before was tht valve need to wow us again, i personally think have used up all their free passes lately. some may disagree and thats cool but you cant say they have made any sort of step up after HL2 can you? great devs progress over time but it seems valve is staying in one place and becoming stagnant. lets hope ep3 makes tht step up, if it ever gets released and if it lasts longer than a hockey game.
i think every1 should at least try out l4d so this news is a bummer if you PS3 guys cant try it out. its grabbing potential is very strong but the lasting appeal is VERY hit or miss.

The OB should have been developed internally from the start for the PS3.
Anyway, the console versions of the OB were all shit compared to the PC, so it doesn't matter if the 360 version of the game is only "just" better than the PS3 version. Every person I know (and I know that's not everybody!) who bought L4D is still playing it (maybe not as much as me, but still regularly). Niche is probably a better way of describing it than very hit or miss.
The reason HL2 seems generic now is because it's coming up to five years old! If gaming hadn't made some steps in those five years (a whole new gen of consoles has come out in that time!), then I would be worried. I play one valve game, L4D and its on my PC. Whoopy shit. They don't make that many great games, if they don't want to produce for the ps3, thats fine with me, tell me when theres news of GTA5 or MGS5! i have The Orange Box on my PS3, and i think its brilliant ( dont like Team fortress ) I never noticed any glitchs or any of the crap people talked about. maybe i got lucky. niche ya tht could describe it pretty well. the problem i think exists is that if you just try the game and hear of all this ai director stuff you think that the game would be far more varied than it actually is.
abt HL2: i was saying tht exact thing, it actually plays just the same as shooters nowadays meaning it was way ahead of its time back then and i was trying to explain tht to someone who said it sucked. problem now though is that the episodic content hasnt tried anything different so ep3 should, if it doesnt then what gives? What HL2 has that most shooters lack is a really compelling story, with characters you actually care about. Anyone whos gotten to the end of episode 2 will know what i'm talking about. its story is way better than most but its not that great either. the characters do have some substance to them but they do one of the things tht really, really lowers the experience and thats making your character mute. you can never connect to your character and its also just a very stupid/annoying idea. you cant feel any sort of emotion or sense a personality so with these games you hardly ever care if you die in the most horrific ways possible. please devs stop dong this and just hire 1 more damn voice actor for gods sake! I have to disagree with you on that one, Bioshock has to be one of the best immersive games out there and Jack only spoke in the first 2 minute opening. To say that the PS3 version is inferior is nonsense, and Newell should not use that as an excuse to stop developing for such a core machine.

Never has there been such great value for money than with this title. All 5 additions are priceless and compelling.
And the end of Episode 2 is one of the only few gaming moments that almost brought me to tears. Shocking stuff. if that. I think its better when the main character is mute, becasue you instantly give the lead character your voice to fill in the blank, thus making it more immersive. The only time you ever see freemans face is on the box, and you didn't even see that on the original.
It breaks the 4th wall which makes you care even more for your character as your are the character. You are freeman not you are controlling him. It works really well. It did brilliantly in Portal too, Glados isn't talking to to a test subject you Are the test subject. The moment i found out you were playing a woman made me feel the same as when you see the ending of the video for samck my bitch up for the first time. brilliant, bloody brilliant. Good point about glados. I was looking on youtube at compilations of what she says, among the best and definitely most amusing voice work on a game I can think of.
I'm always quite relieved that Link doesn't have a voice apart from his few grunts. The day I load up a zelda game and am greeted with a cheesy american accent is the day Nintendo will really have lost it!!
I wish Sega had kept Sonic mute. »ya bioshock is prob 1 of my fav games of all time and immersive as hell but i again didnt have any connection to the lead character because there was nothing to connect to. games like these need distinct personalities while devs should make the guys from games like gears absolutely mute (especially tht freaking dom guy).
in games like tht (HL, dead space) it always seems your character never acknowledges other characters and they pick that up with remarks like "you're a quiet one" or crap like tht, so filling in the blanks as 1 said doesnt make sense unless you're talking to yourself in your head because the other characters dont react to you unless you walk somewhere or smthg. |
