Share this article: Digg.comFacebookGoogle BookmarksN4GGamerblipsdel.icio.usRedditSlashdot.orgStumbleUpon If the games were £10.00 each, it would have been a really exciting update. As it is, it's about as exciting as a halfway house, PS3 firmware update.
Bobbins. I've had the pre update for a while, it's a good step forward. I can't seem to find out where you're supposed to be able to display how long you've been a Live member though ? I thought this was also part of the update...
Avatar marketplace is great! I might go out and buy new underwear for my Avatar... Having had the update during the beta phase, I have to say the biggest improvement is the faster & smoother running of the dashboard overall.
..although, being able to "dress to impress" in my Monkey Island outfit, while driving my remote controlled warthog does come a close second! 8) I like that we can rate games as well. I gave the Ninja Turtles remake 1*. Awful game. Ive just switched on the xbox but no update, just signed in. :? The pricing of the games is indeed bobbins, but the rest of it is not. The speed of the interface has been increased drastically (well at least it had done on the beta, time will tell if that was temporary), and the size of installation for quite a few games has been decreased, both very good things! There are quite a few other things, some aesthetic and some functional, but all generally helpful.
Oh, and Trials HD comes tomorrow, not part of the update but I’m looking forward to it a lot. I was never going to give a toss about Games on Demand, you can get most of those games for less than a tenner and I just couldn't see them making them cheaper than that anyway. XBLA etc is fine for me.
Best thing from my point of view is the speed of the guide and the reduced size of the HDD installs - the last one is very, very good. I've only done one and FIFA went from 6gb to around 5gb and some have apparently dropped by 40% or so.
I'm sure some of the chat/party improvements will come in handy at some point, but it's hardly a deal breaker! Oh and this, this is an important aspect of it, especially for Indie Games that otherwise would be lost in a sea of mediocrity. To be honest, I never had a problem with the 360 interface, long before the blades were cast aside for the avatar stuff. I've certainly never had a problem with the speed of the interface.
What is this Trials HD? I haven't heard of that one.
Off subject by quite a margin, but what is the score with Wolfenstein? I know very little about the game, yet it is released this week!
Anyone? I played the demo the other day, and it truly was awful. It seemed too easy for a start.
It will be interesting to see what games stand at the top of the ratings, in a couple of weeks.
I'm still waiting to spend my 800 points. The last game that I tried was Xplosion Man, which seemed fun at first, but became really repetitive after just a few minutes. The actual interface itself has never been a problem for me, though some reported it as so, the one thing that was though was waiting for DL options to appear on a game. Previously it would take up to 20 seconds or so, now it’s done in two.
Remember Kickstart? Well now think Trials HD is that, but all glossy and lovely:
http://www.eurogamer.net/videos/exclusive-emotional-trials-hd-trailer
it looks brilliant, and has garnered rather good reviews so far, and it’s out tomorrow.
As for Wolfenstein, it’s probably because it’s going to be rubbish, and the developer knows it, therefore now first peeks, no exclusive reviews, just a quite insertion into the market and hope people buy it because of its name. Its in the top right corner of your gamer card. Its the big number in the yellow cirlce.
The best thing i'd say about the update is that it makes NXE work a lot smoother, It also drops the space it takes to install games. It shaved 200mb off of both fallout 3 and Fable 2.
apparently it makes King of fighters only a 750mb install.
Pretty snazzy. The new stuff to buy on the other hand is all overpriced Kickstart! That's the one. Please read my post on the Trials HD thread and you'll find that you have just won yourself a dose of kudos.
Pretty worrying regarding Wolfenstein, too.... At the risk of asking an obvious question to those people who've already updated: will I need to uninstall and reinstall the games to see the reduced install size or is it somehow automatic? You do unfortunately yes, still, it frees up space if you need to! Still no update for yet, is there something wrong? Where do I find on my gamercard how long i've been a Live member for :? ... this is really important :D No worries, that's kind of what I'd expected. I agree though that it's worth the time to do it to save on the space. Thanks for the answer :-) It's times like these I wish I had more than the 20Gb hard drive. I've got less than 4Gb left so I can't even install a single game, let alone worry about shaving a mere 200Mb off one. Stupid crazy pricing.
Interested in Trials HD, but waiting to see how much replayability it has. Local multiplayer could be fun too. I've only got 20gb drive, but I've removed all the stuff i don't need and now i have enough room for at least to game installs, (12gb) Kick Start now thats a blast from the past. Some of the installs knock much more than 200mb off. Apparently L4D installs 1.3gb smaller, and Battlefield: Bad Company, 1.6gb smaller.
Seeing as you only have 13gb to play with (that is a ****ing shocker, MS should be hung for that - what takes up 7GB? Don't think XP takes up that much space!!), you might be able to get an extra game on there or at least have two games and plenty of space for xbla games/demos.
Better than a kick in the face I suppose. Although some people have bought the 60gb kit for £50, then sold their 20GB drive for about £20 or so, the 3month xbl code for £10 and the second headset for £10, meaning you only pay about £10 for it. Phone up MS, get a free transfer kit sent to you and flog that too and you're probably breaking even!
Or check out avforums or hukd and be quick when cheap 120gb drives come up for sale! If I were to unistall say both Banjos, Bionic Commando and another XBLA Game, could I then re install them without any further charge? Those £1.99 Mastertronic titles, Kickstart, BMX Racers, Vegas Jackpot,Kane...£1.99!!!!! those were the days... £19.99
I have to say the new avatar stuff is cool, especially the Splinter Cell outfit. :D »
Yep, once you've bought them under your gamer tag, you can delete and download them as much as you want. You can even download them onto someone elses xbox HDD, but you then have to sign in online to play them I believe.
Before I got my 60gb drive, I was always chopping and changing what took up that spare gig or so.
Just make sure you are using the orignal 360 you bought them on, otherwise you wont be able to play offline. Yeah, they're linked to your account, so it knows you've already paid for them and can download them again at no extra cost. Yes, they're tied to your account so you can delete and redownload them as often as you want.
My issue isn't game installs, it's saved stuff. Forza 2, for example, eats over 700Mb of my drive. GTA4 isn't far behind. Burnout Paradise takes the cake, with well over 1.1Gb in updates. I have practically no DLC or XBLA games that I can clean up. When Forza 3 comes out I'll obviously get rid of the FM2 stuff. It's madness.
I've been thinking of picking up a 120Gb drive on the cheap, but don't know what the score is with transferring all my stuff without the transfer cable. Can I just stick all my saves on a USB drive and them import it all manually? I'd hate to lose access to the stuff I HAVE bought just because I wanted to save some money. Im going to have to invest in a better HDD myself, the 20G is just nowhere near enough space for me, thanks to all for answering my (stupid) question :D .
Also, im sure that someone on here spoke about phoning MS and requesting a free transfer cable when your upgrading your hard drive.
Can anyone confirm this (not more questions!?!) ? its on your profile in a little yellow circle next to your gamertag, mines 4 yrs
 Guess I will switch my xbox on for the first time in a month just to update it even if nothing interesting is on the update. peace folks. If you get a 120gb drive, you might get one with it - am not sure. If not MS will send you one for free, or you can have mine.
If you have a decent internet connection, it's quicker to delete the downloaded stuff on your 20gb drive and redownload it. I get 1.5MB/sec downloads easily on XBL. »
Got mine for free, took about ten days to get to me though. I'm happy to spread the love with it though and send it on if others promise to either send it on or return it to me - i.e not sell it!!! The number on your gamercard only starts if you been a gold member for a year with no breaks i.e Using pre -paid cards and your subscription runs out without you putting in another card/code. To help prevent this from happening you will now get reminders when your subscription is about to end. »»
Yep you can get a cable for free and it doesn't come with the drive by default. I'd recommend doing a complete transfer over between drives. I switched from 20Gb to 120Gb in about an hour i think. dead easy.
on the switching drives machines front for XBLA games, initially you can't play them unless your on live, however you can do a content transfer license. http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/support/drm/
i think you can only do this once every 12 months but they might have changed it.
all my regular games are hard drive installed now. it's a lot quieter that's for sure! Also you can only use the transfer cables once. Link xbox support http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/xbox360/console/datamigration.htmundefined thanks, can you only view it on the console itself ? at the moment i'm trying to find it on the Live My Xbox web page... I 'think' that just relates to the old 20GB drive. Basically meaning that the 20GB is wiped after use and only works when upgrading drives.
I think. yeah, you can use the cable as many times as you like. According to everything I read on my searches this morning, the transfer cable automatically formats the old drive when the transfer is done, no matter the size. I've seen there's a setting on there to say what videos you're watching. I tried it with a friend to see (I used a DVD and he a downloaded from internet movie file) and neither of showed what we were watching. Is this just for stuff you've rented off Live then? It does. I think that is what the 'use once' is referring too.

Not sure where the disk that came with mine is though. Hmmmmm, I'll have a look later. Rockstars Table Tennis for 20 quid???..it was a budget title when it was released in 2006,in fact i got it back then in a 2 for 20 quid offer I'm on the preview program and It's a lot quicker and more reponsive than the old dash.
The extra monitor settings, while minor, are a help if you've high end TV. The new avatar stuff is cool but costs far too much for some of the stuff.
The biggie is the veteran status on your profile. I was a Europe beta tester so I've big fat 6 on my profile. Suck it newbies!!! I'll be joining ya...as a fellow beta tester too (shame we lost our shiny B on the live forums though) will it show on the web page interface? »»
Any possible chance I could take you up on that ? I could make use of it before sending it on, or returning it ... ?:) I do think its annoying now that I have to scroll up two places to get to My Xbox when signing in. I don't care about what's hot or whatever. I just want to access my stuff. Is there no way around this?
And yes, the Turtles remake is pants. Not a patch on the arcade original or SNES version I do think its annoying now that I have to scroll up two places to get to My Xbox when signing in. I don't care about what's hot or whatever. I just want to access my stuff. Is there no way around this?

And yes, the Turtles remake is pants. Not a patch on the arcade original or SNES version WHO PRICES THESE GAMES ON DEMAND £19.99!!!DONT BUY ALL AVAILABLE FOR £5 ON E BAY ROBBING MICROSOFT AGAIN There was an option in the settings tab to make the welcome tab go away. then it sends you straight to my xbox in stead. Well it appears that you only get to see how long a Gamertag has been active when looking at the 360 dashboard, you cannont view this information when using the Xbox Live web page... bit of a shame really as I'd like to show off my big fat 6 everywhere :( A little underwhelming if i'm honest. no free props whatsoever :( |
