EA interested in smaller acquisitions

Had enough of big Take-Two merger attempts
Electronic Arts is interested in smaller-scale acquisitions, according to chief financial officer Eric Brown.

Speaking at the Pacific Crest Technology Leadership Forum in Colorado, Brown said that the firm is keen to increase its presence in the consumer-to-consumer marketplace via the acquisition of franchises or online publishing technologies.

The executive noted that acquisition targets that fit the bill would likely cost less than $1 billion, and added that EA is "underweighted" in Asia, reports Reuters.

"We're just not interested in a large-scale, traditional packaged-good publishing deal," Brown said.

I'm guessing it's for the following reasons:

1) Smaller companies are theoretically easier to acquire - certainly economically.

2) Smaller acquisition expenditures is likely more appealing (depending on the potential the acquisition target presents,) given the current economic climate.

3) It may be one of the small companies that has the next "big thing" IP wise since they have to rely on creativity to make a splash in a pond with existing big players.

I'm guessing that they have seen the success of games such as world of goo and Braid and realised there is a lot of potential money in the cheap to make, fun to play indie games market.
