Iwata: Nintendo's E3 briefing wasn't good enough

Nintendo president disappointed with Nintendo's 2009's show (again)
After the bomb that was Nintendo's 2008 E3 press briefing, all eyes were on the firm making a comeback at this year's show. And we thought it did pretty well. Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata, however, didn't.

"Honestly speaking, none of us at Nintendo thought that our presentation at E3 was as good as it could have been," said Iwata of the show, which we covered in full right here.

"It is apparent that we could not fully convey the charm of our products. In the past, Wii Sports and Wii Fit were naturally able to convey their appeal on stage since it was something no one had ever seen or imagined before," he added.

"This year, however, with the New Super Mario Bros. Wii, four people lined up with Wii Remotes was not a scene that no one had ever seen."

"Now we strongly feel that we need to look into finding a better way to demonstrate the products' appeal better at E3 in these times where more people are watching it online via web cast not only in the U.S. but all around the world, than the number of audience who actually watch it in the theatre. In that sense, we learned many lessons from this year's E3 show," concluded Iwata in a recent financials call (via Nintendo Everything).

New Super Mario Bros. Wii was one of the highlights of the show, we thought.

I'm sorry C&VG, but i can't consider a 4-player version of a 3yr old game a highlight of the show.

No matter how good New Super Mario Bros is......
Posted by lordirongut
I, too, thought it was good. I was a little disappointed by the lack of Zelda but other than that, I enjoyed it.

Why dosen't he stop this family fun crap and start investing in proper games, then!

Then the fans will be more pleased, i'm sure. Therefore he will be more pleased, and then everyones happy!

Apart from the families with little Jimmy moaning that carnival games 2 hasn't been announced and Uncle Frank not ammused that he hasn't been getting his fair share of Brain Training games.

Yes, it was disappointing, but to be honest I wasn't expecting to be blown away! The Wii is all but dead to me at the moment. I'll get the updated Metroid trilogy and then...Hmmm.
The new Metroid game and the new Zelda are really the only new things I'm interested in and that won't be for ages.
With the exception of a small handful of apps the Wii has found its niche and it's not for the vast majority of gamers.

The one thing that ruined it for me is that Cammie woman.

She presents like she's delivering to a womans tea group!

There's nothing wrong with trying to look how to make something better, even if it was alright to begin with.

Nintendo... Yes, I've heard of them... what do they do again?
Posted by nb_nmare2
There have already been more 1st party non-casual games released for the Wii than there were for either the GameCube or the N64.
Plus, there have been more casual 1st party titles than non-casual 1st party titles for every Nintendo console ever. Yes, that includes both the SNES and the NES. (EDIT: In fact, back in those days, many gamers - primarily PC users - considered the likes of Mario and Zelda to be "casual" titles.)

The problem is, many people seem to think Nintendo are somehow responsible for what other publishers release on the Wii. HINT: They're not. (Sure, they can block specific titles due to excessive sex, violence, or whatever, but they can't force other companies to develop certain types of games atthe expense of others.)

he's right, their E3 show was awful. it just wasnt impressive. nothing surprised me, unless it was in a negative way. their biggest innovation was a heart rate monitor.... whoopie, that's really got me excited.... it was depressingly boring to see Nintendo be unable to entertain. it was just an hour of things id seen before in slightly different flavours.

the most interesting thing was metroid, because it actually looked like it may have a decent story, something which is very rare on the wii.

compared to the Microsoft and Sony shows, nintendos was an absolute dreary joke. its the kind of attitude Ive come to expect from them, and ultimately why my wii lies dormant, unplugged, covered in dust.
Posted by kimoak
Well... The same could be said for all the companies. SONY and MS shown motion controls... Yeah, whatever. Hardly groundbreaking anymore. Not much shown that has not been done before. They are all to blame.

I think it's only what you would call 'gamers' that were disappointed with the content of Nintendo's E3 presentation.

My 67 year old mum didn't talk to me about any of the DS announcements, neither did my niece, 4 year old nephew or brother in laws wife. Mind you they don't give a rats arse about gaming other than what the adverts during Coronation Street, Loose Women or some kids cartoon tell them to get. My brother (another casual gamer with a massive interest in E3, NOT) who got Wii Fit asked my opinion on whether it was worth getting, I told him no, he got it anyway and hasn't used it since he opened it.

My 14 year old son however thought it was a load of old bollocks and even at his age is reminiscing about the days when Nintendo's GAMES innovation was more important than their next PERIPHERAL.

It was underwhelming, but what do you expect when you have noting to show? That's just what happens when a toy company makes a presentation at a video games event. It's going to be underwhelming.

They just need to pick their venue. Next year they should book the toy expo instead. Their announcements might actually look impressive compared with the new toys from Mattel. They'll have a hard time outdoing Fisher Price though, I hear there's a new Tickle Me Elmo on the way.
Posted by lordirongut
Come on, they announced some good stuff. While I am not really into it, Mario Galaxy 2 looked good as well as Metroid: Other M. Although I will agree that it was the weakest of the three.
Posted by JuiKuen
They did announce maybe three good games: two Marios and Metroid. The rest was pants. Last year was utter shite and this year was purely average at best. Its not like the old shows they used to put out. I mean, I'll be happy with those games but I'm just one person...
Posted by BYDO
They should bring back the spaceworld events.

Metroid+, Darkside Chronicles, Silent Hill, Mario Galaxy 2, Sin and Punishment 2, Red Steel 2, Tatsunuko vs Capcom, No More Heroes 2, Guitar Hero 5, Ghostbusters etc, etc. Yeh, the Wii doesnt have any "proper" games on the way.

Imho, if you don't bother to look, then of course you wont see the core games. Facts are though, theres plenty of them.
Posted by Athrun888
Well I for one am pretty pleased with E3 on nintendos side. They announced Mario galaxy 2, sin & punishment 2, Metroid other M, Zelda Spirit Tracks and GOLDEN SUN. Plus a few to watch out for. It could have been better but it could have been a LOT worse. For me a good showing is when at least 4 games appear that I want to preorder, infact the only thing that would have pleased me more is a announcement for NPC zelda wind waker, and I'm sure is on the way thanks to nintendo enjoying selling stuff to us twice.
Posted by Obscure_Metaphor
Mario galaxy 2 made me realize that Nintendo have changed - it was just a flat out sequel. there's loads of Mario games, so they're all sequels effectively, but MG2 just felt like the only motivation to make it was more money with minimal effort. 10 years ago, Nintendo wouldn't do that. fair enough, they're a business, not a religion, and they need to make money, no problem with that. my problem is they're treating their 'fans' like they can just throw any old shit out and they will buy it. The fine art mentality of Nintendo has gone.

i dont think E3 is for Nintendo anymore... they're after casual gamers, which have never heard of E3.
Posted by milky_joe
E3 is the only time you'll see gaming news in the wider media, so that's not really true.

This is the genius part of the Ninty marketing scheme.

1. Promise that you haven't abandoned your "core" market.
2. Promise a big game that'll keep or win back the "core" gamers.
3. Turn up at conference with new Animal Crossing or a remake of something a few years old.
4. Make crying noises that it didn't go how you planned but next time you'll have something for the core market.
5. GO TO 1.

Sure, New New Super Mario Bros (because New SMB was on DS, right?) looks cool, but it's not something there's much replay value in. I mean once you've been killed a dozen times due to your friends' idiocy you'll want to go back to single player anyway.
SMW on the SNES had 96 levels to unlock and complete, and even that got dull once you'd found them. So something with 30 levels is going to get there far quicker.
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
As apposed to every other MP game in which you play on the same levels over and over again. Like say Call of Duty or Halo. How many times can you shoot some foul mothed arse hole over the internet on the same few maps untill a new pack of 4 comes out. ad infinitum you say. Oh well thats fine.

But actually playing a PLatform game with 30 right out the box and you can play with actual people you say, in the same room. Well thats obviously going to get boring much quicker.

Come on people. The ragging on nintendo for the sake of it is getting dull.

Your average game has about as much lifespan and replay value as the new mario bros is going to have, thinking of how much i tend to find in nintendo games vs the competitionyou r average game probably has a hell of a lot less.

IMO the highlight of the presentation was metroid; other M.

I really thought Nintendo had learnt their lessons from last years debacle, how wrong i was.

I am a lifelong Nintendo fan and had/have all their consoles to date but this gen (Wii not DS) they just haven't cut it. This is very subjective of course but i think the titles don't stand up against the N64 and to some extent the Cube ones. I'm talking the regular franchises. Also isn't it about time some new quality IP got introduced? FFS stop with the finger pincher peripheral and get the games out.

New IP is needed.

Quality follow-ups to Star Fox, Pilot Wings, 1080, F-Zero are needed for a start. Where are they?

3rd party publishers are struggling to make money on the Wii as well (for most publishers at least) and it's a sorry situation. There's been more creativity in the Wiiware titles and i bet at least half of the Wii owners out there don't even know about Wiiware!

Reggie and Cammy were crap presenters this year. The truth hurts. Buck your ideas up Ninty before it's too late.
Posted by Athrun888
As I said earlyer yes it's annoying that star fox, F-zero, and others haven't been anounced, but at least their actually releasing games this year. Also it's getting very annoying when people keep going on about nintendo not doing what you want. If you didn't like it say it once but any more than that and it means you have nothing new or constructive to say. If you don't like what nintendo is doing then ignore them and stop whining about it. Sorry about any offence caused, but everyones been saying essentially the same thing for about 4 years now and it's getting EXTREMLY annoying. As I said sorry about any offence caused.

That's my idea of hell. The repetition that is inherent to multiplayer means I tire of it very quickly. Most of the time I don't even bother trying it out on the games I buy. Single player is far more enjoyable to me.

So I agree with you totally on that one. Playing with people in the same room on a game with plenty of varied maps/levels is definitely my preference. The same sense of variety and progression of playing a game in single player, but with more people. Not the same level and goals over and over again.

It's like having your cake and eating it too. Although I never understood that expression. Of course if I have cake I'm going to eat it. Wtf else would I do with it?

1. Demonstrate new products for the FIRST time. There were very few surprises at Nintendo's show. There was nothing to get truly excited about.

2. Do not use robots to present your showcase. Cammie is one of the dullest people I've ever watched on stage. It was like watching my grandmother trying to tell me about what's hip and cool. Find a one young voice that people can connect with. Reggie's not helping either.

The problem is not many people are as faithful as you blindly hugging everything Nintendo. If you are a true fan you will see they have changed for the worse and cheapening their brand and failing the fans for commercial gains. They are churning and churning out the same thing over and over again, there's hardly a game which isn't a sequel or remake of some sort and we have seen Ninty churn out the big hitters Zelda, Mario (In the case of this year 4 or 5 new mario games) and Metroid EVERY year for ages and frankly it's getting boring.

When asked about why the Wii is haemoraging sales Iwata was quoted saying “It’s not the case of the quality of hardware moved, the feeling of missing strong competitive power, lacking its luster or poor sales.

“Consistently, big time titles will be released in the marketplace for this hardware. When that stops, to reinvigorate the console, or to put it another way, I think the current decline in hardware sales is due to the fact that there aren’t many big titles (at the moment).”

So Nintendo can admit it, maybe some of you die hard fans should open your eyes and face the truth. Nintendo need to buck up their ideas and thank the fans and make some fresh new titles that will get us excited again instead of f***ing the fans by spooning shovelware, rehashes and lazy 'sequels' down our throats.

Not really. Loads of work gets poured into the main franchises. Nintendo has provided what it has always provided.

They do need to push more though.

The comments here are ironic when all that got unveiled for the other two machines are two pieces of motion kit.

Sony have made what the Wiimote should have been like?

Yeah, right. Years later with a very safe proven market. It's pathetic.

We all expected Nintendo to crash miserably and they've hit a well deserved goldmine for the risks they took.
Posted by ricflair
But Nintendo would probably have gone the way of Sega if it wasn't for the more casual approach of the DS/wii.

I mean they could have funded a 'core' console with the profits from the DS, but why would they? Why bring something in that makes no money just because you have profit from another product?

At least they admitted to some mistakes, haven't really heard the others do that, with all the bravado on show. That spreads over to the owners of the consoles in my opinion.

Nintendo dropped the ball second half of last year, but apart from that I've been very happy with my wii. I can understand others don't feel the same.

I was reading the report on Edge, and the units they shift are staggering. They didn't include Brawl as a major release, yet it sold more than any game on 360/PS3 (taken individually). And sales to date are higher than CoD4 on the 360. I think last year was probably a special year of Nintendo in terms of sales, I'm not sure how they can repeat that.

I'm pretty sure that Pilotwings, F Zero, Starfox etc won't shift those kind of numbers.

I can't understand anybody being surprised that Nintendo are sticking to their core franchises - they've done this with every single console. And it may be losing sales, but it's still outselling the others and they're still making money. A position that MS and Sony would take in a second, and I doubt they'd give a toss about pissing of 'core' gamers.

They haven't even got close to the heritage Nintendo have and the level of affection people have for them. I guess this is why some people defend them (I'm not going to let a bad 9 months out of 20 odd years of almost peerless gaming put me off) and why people are disappointed with the wii, as they expect 'more', whatever that means!
Posted by milky_joe
The thing is though, these 'hemorrhaging sales' aren't exactly a disaster at the moment, as it's still selling several hundred thousand a week. Hell, in the last month it's just shy of 1million sales. MS and Sony haven't done those kind of numbers in a long time.

The only time Nintendo need to worry is if the situation is reversed, but even then, it'd take years for Sony or MS to catch up.
Posted by Athrun888
Well you people keep judging nintendo by thier marketing image, a mistake that I used to do with the 360, cause the image microsoft have built is, shooters are king, and for the last few years that's all I thought it had to offer, loads of carbon copy fps, however I dug deeper and have found there's a lot more than just fps, which is exactly what you're doing, I doubt you've ever even played some of the best the Wii has to offer, yet you slag it off like it's just a kid's machine.

And as for the sequels, name one fps that is drastically different from those that came before, check that name three, nintendo may be releasing more sequels but unlike most companies, the sequels always do something new, granted galaxy 2 is the first sequel for mario, but the whole space thing still has lots of potential.

I admit that nintendo isn't quite as good as the old days, but at least there's still more original ideas coming out of them. I also admit that if I see a galaxy 3 I'll be pretty pissed of with nintendo, but I doubt that will happen.

It's ironic now the ol cube is dead people long for those days again and all I can say is you're making the same mistake again.
Posted by Balladeer
And the fanboys come out for their rant. I thought the games they wheeled out were pretty good. S&P2 and a new Golden Sun (partially) made up for no new Starfox, Pilotwings or F-Zero (next year, maybe)?

I'm much more interested in four-player Mario than in a set of ineractive scales. If it hadn't been for the finger device and Cammie Mummaway, I'd have been absolutely chuffed with this year's showing.
