Apple's tablet games machine spotted

Announcement in September, launch in November claim rumours
Reports claim that unnamed industry analysts have "seen first-hand" a prototype of a new Apple tablet which, among other things, is said to focus heavily on gaming capability.

Analysts who say they've seen early versions of the machine expect Apple to make an announcement in September for a release in November, and will cost between $700 and $800.

Jon Peddie, head of, err Jon Peddie Research, says it could feature full home media functionality like Apple's current Apple TV device, and serve as a gaming console, adding: "Gaming will be a big part of what this is about," according to reports.

It's also said that other hardware manufacturers are holding off development on potentially competing products in anticipation of what Apple may reveal.

It'll need to be good at that price.
Posted by kimoak
If this is the case, I am curious of it's capabilities. I guess they will call it a 'Premium product' :)
Posted by Mark240473
Blimey, the PSP Go seems like a give-away compared to the price of the Apple doodah!
Posted by berelain
I was going to say I hope its not another overpriced Apple product, but then I saw the price tag. Ouch. It better have some good capabilities for that price, because you can get a pretty powerful gaming laptop for that price with enough room to spare for an Xbox.
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
if its anything like the I phone an apple gaming platform would be worse for shovelware and crap than both the ds and wii combined. It'll just be chesp rubbish and bad gimmicks all on your over priced load of crap. from apple.

I think i'll pass.
Posted by StonecoldMC
This was inevitable, Ive always thought that Apple would enter the console race at some point.

There kind of where Sony used to be and are pretty much guaranteed 1st day sales of what a few million units, instantly!?

Very very interesting.
Posted by monty_79
I think I will hold of judgement until it is released but if it costs $700-$800, you just know it is going to cost at least £600 over here.

Also, yeah. It is just going to have loads of utter crap on it, and I doubt it will be taken seriously as a gaming console. they do have to get it right though as, once the Mac enthsiasts have all bought one, it could still collapse (just like apple tv).

Still, it will be very interesting to see.
Posted by AJDarkstar
How much? That's way to expensive for a gadget fan like me. Think I'll stick to proper consoles, ta. Besides, the market struggles with two very similar consoles in the PS3 and 360 already, so how will this fare? Apple presents the new Neo-Geo: too expensive for anyone but those rich enough to not care.

bit of a misleading article.

the supposed product is Apple's version of a netbook with a 10" screen. no physical keyboard so think a bigger version of the iphone/ipod touch. it will be a normal mac as well as being geared towards games (through touch controls i'm guessing). cvg are just over egging the pudding in this respect. but as people have already said it will connect to the app store and it will have a gargantuan amount of crap stuff available for you to download.

it will also hook up to your other mac devices in the house and if you've got half a brain it'll connect to a windows pc as well and of course any NAS drive's you may have. It's not cheap but it sounds pretty cool to me.

News of this has been all over ZD net for a while amongst other places, just in case you think i'm making this up.
Posted by Hobophobik
I don't think they are specifically marketing this as a games console, it will be a much more generic device. Obviously this is a gaming site, so CVG are reporting on it from a gaming perspective.

“ladies and gentlemen, first there was the clit-pod, then came the clit-phone……….. ladies and gentlemen I present the latest fashion accessory for all the sheep, the apple clit console!!!!”

(clit= every c*nt has one)
Posted by jonbwfc
It's not a bloody 'games machine'. There's more chance of it running Windows than it being specifically designed for games. What it will be (if it exists at all) is basically a scaled up iPod Touch - possibly with 3g data connection but very unlikely to have iPhone style voice functionality. Given it will have access to the App Store it will be able to download and play the games on there - although I'm not sure how well games designed for a (what?) 480*320 3 inch screen are going to look scaled up to 10" wide.

It's a computer. Therefore you can play games on it. That doesn't make it a 'games machine' any more than the fact I put my shopping in the boot makes my car a tractor.

I have never and will never purchase an Apple product.

I have no doubts that it will be over-priced tat that boasts a load of features that are absolutely rubbish.

http://www.theonion.com/content/news/apple_claims_new_iphone_only

I think that sums the company and their products up rather nicely.

:)

Despite the cost, despite the fact that the software will probably consist entirely of shovelware, and despite the fact there's already beter alternatives available, people will buy it in droves. Why? Because it's an Apple product, and some people just can't be helped.
Posted by theideal
I hear it's just going to run the iphone version of the OS and not regular OSX.
I used to be a massive supporter of Apple, especially being in the industry I'm in, but after some recent customer service 'issues' Apple can GTF!

How wonderful it must be to have such clarity of vision.

Well technically speaking this would be the second attempt at entering into the console arena after the first effort the Apple Pippin in 1995/6. That was over priced and promised to do lots of things but gaming was its main use. It flopped big time, and if there is any truth in a Apple console at that price it could all be history repeating its self.
Posted by paul_brown940
I'm gonna go crazy and take I wild stab in the dark, but I'm guessing your not an Apple fan???? (the company not the fruit, or maybe not the fruit aswell) Am I right or am I right (bloody father in law used to say that, I think he just liked to weight the argument in his favour) :)

It's amazing how dramatic kids get about a manufacturer who undoubtly doesn't make any products within their budget, or to suit their needs.

I could equally dramatic and immature about hundreds of manufacturers I'm not interested in, but you know what, it would be pointless, and ultimately who cares! As a designer I use a Mac, and as a gamer I use a 360. I don't use any other products from Apple or Microsoft, but I'm not bitter about them releasing other products. It seems these days everyone's desperate to change their phones every year, and have a collection of gadgets that play games or music, I don't need these products to fulfill my life. But I'm not going call those that purchase such goods any particular names, or make up ridiculous predictions about new products. Clearly every day we all prove how little interest we have in thousands of products we don't purchase. I find it very odd that there are those willing to concentrate and post comments about products they know nothing about and would never buy.

People need to grow up a little. If a product isn't for you, don't go all Playstation-fanboy, instead concentrate on what you like or want, not what you 'hate'! People are interested in thoughts or intelligent opinions, not brainless, pathetic, unwarranted, uninformed and immature dislikes.

I was the same, nearly everybody I knew who bought Macs just wouldn't shut up about them and it wasn't about the differences that make them a more viable purchase for certain people - it was the the gimmicks! And the white headphone on ipods I don't care for either. Here Mr Mugger, you can be 99% sure there's something worth nicking in my pocket!

But I got an iphone when my contract came up and I have no complaints at all - in fact there was nothing anywhere near on par with it as a mobile phone for surfing etc when I got it. I just hate itunes as a piece of software (quite possibly set in my ways) and the whole mp3 download thing in general.

But the article says its a tablet. Never says its a console and Apple have been talking about entering the netbook market for a while.

I'm sitting in the garden typing this on a 10.2" asus 1000he, battery lasts all day (if I treat it right!), runs XP, surfs fine, plays films, runs MAME, GENS etc, word processing etc and it cost £300. I'm sure it's not as powerful as this mac thingy but it does the job!! In fact I hardly ever use my quad core pc anymore, so the monitor has come downstairs and is attached to the 360!

Gotta love The Onion though!

But will it have cut, copy and paste or will that have to wait for an update? I couldn't believe it when I saw apple are running TV adverts about copy/paste on the iPhone, it is a basic feature that should have been there from the start, lots of other phones have had it for years and they talk about it like it is the holy grail.

Nah, all apple products look pretty but they are overpriced and lacking basic features.
Posted by Barca Azul
They will need a first party Dev to be taken seriously though, although there were rumours that they were considering buying EA!
Posted by headspin
i actually like the mac, the iphone crowd etc just irritate me cos the people that buy it do so mostly as a fashion accesory or are easily sold on silly apps like lightsabers or turning the phone into a shotgun, the apps that are useful on the iphone are already done better on other smartphones....
Posted by lordirongut
Haven't there been rumours of a new Apple gaming device for years? There are forums dated 2004 that discuss this sort of stuff.

Some Apple products are good, others aren't. The computers are nice, but I dislike the OS on them and they are very expensive - you can get a Windows PC or laptop with similar specs much cheaper. I'm not big on iPods either. I don't think that apps are necessary and I think that sound quality is more important, something that I found them to be lacking in. Video quality on them is good, especially on the iTouch/iPhone, but you can get better screens than them as well. I believe that iPods of all varieties are overpriced and overrated and I personally went with a Walkman X-Series and a cheap £30 1GB Walkman B-Series (for when I know I have to leave it unattended), the X-Series has some of the best sound/video quality that I have ever seen and even the cheap B-Series knocks the socks off all the iPods in terms of sound quality, even though it has no video player.

I also agree that apps like the lightsaber app and shotgun app are silly, although I do know people that did buy it for music for the storage capacity.

As an owner of a few Mac products I will say one thing, if they get their act together as they do with ipod, computers etc it will be one solid piece of kit. All the negferets claiming this that and the other about the potential clearly don't know s**t about Apple products generally, take the ipod every one has one because there is not a rival in the market that comes close to it. I work at home on a Mac and at work on am PC, it's like walking back in time each time I go into work!

Perhaps as Jenson suggests a little more info and a little less 'products I can't afford so will just slag off' would be helpful.
Posted by jon_hill987
Are you kidding? Sony MP3 players are far better, they work with drag and drop so no need to be tied to iTunes.
Posted by Weezer
I've lots of mates who own Macs and iPhones. I'm a hardcore Mac fan too. But I can't member any of us forcing it down someone's throat or getting all religious about it...

Unless it was one of those whinging beige-box-owning PC lamers, who should be eviscerated at the temple of Apple awesomeness.
Posted by lordirongut
Most people buy iPods as a fashion accessory. They are stylish and since most people own them they buy one so that they can fit in. Most true audiophiles will tell you that iPods sound like a 50's radio. They aren't bad but most other makes of MP3 player have vastly better SQ.

I haven't had much experience with Mac computers but from the little I have had all I could say is that I wasn't fond of the interface. The other reason that I could never buy into Apple is that most PC games will only work on Windows PCs.
Posted by B_G_G
iZombies will buy it, as massively overpriced and underpowered and full of shovelware as it will undoubtedly be. Then again, they'd buy anything from Apple. They'd buy iHIV.

If this mythical product even exists. Which it probably doesn't.
Posted by The_KFD_Case
Not just good; it'll have to be nothing short of jaw-droppingly amazing at that price if it's going to compete in the console and/or handheld market.
Posted by Osiris25
Well this seems to of hit some nerves with some people today lol! I personally don't have an issue with Apple, i just hope if they do make a entry into the console market they make a better stab at it than the first time. One thing for certain is Apple do very good adverts which have worked wonders for them so that's definetly something they have in their pocket.
Posted by The_KFD_Case
*raises hand* The one thing I simply must disagree with you on regarding the above is that not "everyone" owns an iPod. I don't and my interest in doing so is at best limited. :P
Posted by ricflair
For such a long time though, Sony missed the boat because they didn't compete in terms of memory. And my Sony MP3 player (going back about 4 years now) didn't use drag and drop - I had to use Sonic or whatever it's called. I was waiting for ages for a decent sized sony mp3 player but they took forever! By then I had a SonyEricsson P1i phone/pda with 4gb card and that did me until my contract came up - hello Mr iphone.

For me walking around London and being on the tube, what's the point in really great audio? You lose loads of it due to the outside noise and 128kbs or whatever isn't exactly great, no matter what player you have. Can't say I notice any difference between my old Sony P1i and the ipod - they both do a perfectly good job but the iphone is vastly superior as a phone/pda.
Posted by The_KFD_Case
Now that's ironic.
Posted by slothfull9
Calm down, people - this is still just speculation!
Posted by ei8hty5ive
Yeah I think this new ipad (what are the chances it will be called that?!) will have games on it but it won't be it's main feature. I'm sure this will be a prelude to the real thing and they are just testing the waters until it releases the igamer (Console). I also think the when the Apple console does come out it will have the same effect as the launch of the PS1 and will instantly take the console market by storm.

Apple have some VERY creative heads working for them, and are VERY innovative, add to the fact that they'll have devs throwing themselves to develop for them and the aggressive nature of the company + huge amounts of revenue/money they have in reserve. They truly can't lose.

Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft...be afraid be very afraid!
Posted by ei8hty5ive
oh and not to mention the HUGE fanbase and desirablility of the Apple brand (and products)...
Posted by B_G_G
Hmm. Someone hasn't read the other responses on this thread. Apple are hardly universally popular and their gaming track record is appalling.

Apple products = slick interface, arrogant marketing and overpriced weak hardware. We have that already. It's the Wii. And Apple ain't no Nintendo when it comes to games.

I hate Apple. I probably always will, at least as long as Apple sell style over substance products at massively inflated prices to their iZombie cultists, and it's for damn sure I'm not alone in my loathing.

Apple are control freaks when it comes to third party software, so developing games for publishers would be a nightmare. The console itself will be massively expensive. And the rubbish iTunes will undoubtedly be integrated as Apples Xbox Live Marketplace/PSN equivalent. It. Will. Be. Shit.

So yeah. I'm sure if Apple made a console it would sell a few to the people who would happily queue for a week to buy Steve Job's faeces, but I'm confident that gamers and developers would steer well clear.
Posted by seancuk23
iTunes sucks and so do iPods and over priced for what they are, the iPhone Camara really really sucks and as for the Mac, its just under powered and over priced again!
Posted by Jensonjet
So as I understand it, PC-owners/Microsoft lovers dislike Apple because:

1. People with their products are generally quite happy with their purchases

2. Apple's product design doesn't suit their tastes

3. Apple products are expensive?

Wow. If I hated every manufacturer that designed a better product than I have at home, or produced goods more expensive than I'd purchased, or worse still, made products that pleased their purchasers... I'd probably have to hate thousands of manufacturers. I can't imagine how bitter a person I'd come across if I then felt the need to publish my thoughts in a forum! Seriously guys... you have PCs... you love them, or not... don't feel threatened by, or inferior to, or whatever else of a problem you have by Apple, it's products or people who own them.

Oh, by the way, Apple computers may cost a little more than PCs, but unlike PCs they actually have a resale value. Oh yeah, and they look cool too!
Posted by The_KFD_Case
That's all very good but unless they launch a new generation of consoles, then Apple faces a saturated market and it can expect stiff competition from MS, Sony and Nintendo. Furthermore, if Apple's other product prices are any indicator it might also try to float an absurdly expensive price which I'm willing to go on the record and predict will flop. If they do release a good console with a comparable price then there may be something to be concerned about.
Posted by The_KFD_Case
All fair points except that Apple's computers are continually behind the PC market in terms of cutting edge hardware. So what? Well, for gamers it's a sticking point and for the much larger, and more lucrative, business maket where hardware doesn't have to be as cutting edge, Apple's prices render them at a disadvantage. There are sound reasons why Apple only holds ca. 1/10th of the computer market.
Posted by slothfull9
Hmmm, hasn't the Wii proved that console hardware doesn't have to be cutting edge to sell like hot cakes? For the mass market, it doesn't seem to matter too much, and like them or not, Apple are one of the coolest brands on the planet.
Of course, the Wii is a lot cheaper than an Apple console is likely to be, which could be a sticking point.
But all this is speculation - I'll wait and see!
Posted by Sir_Whisky
Most of you losers obviously have never owned a Mac or you wouldn't write so much stupid and false statements.
Moreover, if you compare all aspects, including quality and software, Macs are quite cheap.
