Kona 2010: New mountain bikes, road models and more

Kona have released details of their new models for 2010, including fresh full-suspension bikes, the reintroduction of an old favourite dirt jump bike, plus new road, cyclo-cross and commuting models.

The official UK launch is happening later this month, when we’ll bring you more details and pricing info.

Cadabra and Abra Cadabra

The Cadabra and Kona Abra Cadabra are Kona's new all-mountain bikes, which use the company’s Magic Link suspension platform. These sub-30lb bikes have 5in of travel at the rear, with a Fox 32 Float RL (15mm dropout) taking care of the front suspension.

On the Cadabra, a mix of Shimano Deore, XT and SLX is used for the shifting and brakes, with Mavic Crossride wheels and Kona’s own handlebars and stems.

The upgraded Abra Cadabra gets a mix of XT and SLX, and an XT wheelset.

Cadabra chief designer Brian Berthold says: “From the steepest, gnarliest granny gear climbs and tightest switchbacks, to fast and hairy downhill descents, no other bike on the planet can perform the magic like this bike.”

Hei Hei 100

Kona’s legendary Hei Hei full-suspension cross-country bike gets a longer travel older brother for 2010 in the shape of the Hei Hei 100. A RockShox Recon SL Solo suspension fork ups the normal 80mm travel to 100mm, while a mixture of Shimano Deore and XT take care of shifting and braking.

Downhill

Kona have reduced the weight of their Stab Supreme downhill bike for 2010 so that it now tips the scales at under 40lb. The new frame uses a tapered head tube and internal headset with oversized bearings for a lower stack height. It also features Kona’s DOPE floating brake arm to keep the suspension active during aggressive braking. Other component highlights include Shimano Saint shifters and brakes, RockShox Boxxer World Cup fork and Sun MTX 33 rims.

Dirt jump

As well as a signature edition Lacondeguy Inc frameset, Kona have brought back the Stuff dirt jump/slopestyle bike for 2010, which they describe as an affordable, durable hardtail.

Built using the same frame geometry as the more costly Shred, the Stuff has a mix of Shimano Deore, Acera and Alivio gearing, Marzocchi Dirt Jumper 2 forks (with 20mm dropouts), Tektro hydraulic disc brakes and Alex DM-24 wheels.

Kona are catering for younger dirt jumpers too with a new 24in-wheeled Cowan 2-4. Like its bigger wheeled brother it comes with Marzocchi Dirt Jumper 3 forks, Shimano 486 hydraulic disc brakes and Alex DM-24 wheels.

Road and commuting

Kona have added a new three-speed city bike to their range dubbed the WorldBike. Although prices haven’t been confirmed, Kona say it’s going to be an affordable bike for the masses.

The Dr Fine is another new bike in the urban riding range. It has hub gears, Shimano disc brakes and Kona’s P2 rigid fork.

Heading up Kona’s 2010 commuter bike range is the Super Dew. With its Race Light butted scandium frame, carbon bars, cranks and forks, and FSA wheelset it’s got the potential to be the ultimate flat-barred commuting machine.

New for 2010 is the Honky Inc – a drop-bar road bike with a Shimano 105 groupset and Avid BB7 disc brakes. Fixings for mudguards also feature on the steel frame.

The Kona Band Wagon is also new and is a souped-up version of the company’s existing Paddy Wagon. With a powder blue frame, bright orange wheels and the ability to be run as a fixed gear or singlespeed, we can see this being a popular inner-city choice.

The Grand Wagon has even more singlespeed/fixie bling in the form of Mavic Track Ellipse wheels, Dedacciai SAT bronze-welded chromoly tubing, Sugino cranks plus a Selle Italia Flight Retro saddle to finish the look. Kona say it’s a "piece of mobile art".

For the skinny tyred dirt fiends, there’s a new Major One scandium-frames singlespeed cyclo-cross bike.
