Sales and losses decline at Sega

A mixed bag
Sega Sammy has released its financial report for the first quarter ended July 31, revealing mixed results with a decline in sales but also a decline in losses.

The company's net sales hit 60.4 billion yen for the quarter, down by 19 per cent from 74.6 billion year-on-year. However, operating losses improved from 10.2 billion yen in 2008's comparable quarter to a loss of only 7.8 billion yen in 2009. Net losses decreased to 10.2 billion yen during the quarter, down from 10.5 billion yen year-on-year.

Sega's consumer business division - its videogames arm - saw sales plummet to 18 billion yen during the three month period, down from 30.5 billion the previous year. Likewise, operating income declined from a loss of 4.1 billion yen for the quarter in 2008 to 4.5 billion yen in 2009.

Total unit sales also declined significantly to 2.65 million units, from 6.89 million during the same period the previous year. Among this quarter's releases was the Wii title The Conduit with sales of 150,000 units, the multiplatform title Virtua Tennis 2009 with 790,000 units, and PSP title Hatsune Miku - Project Diva at 90,000 units.

Europe was the consumer businesses largest market, accounting for sales of 1.12 million units - 42 per cent of total global sales. The US was the second largest market at 990,000 units while Japan and other markets followed at a combined 530,000 sales.

The company's arcade machines division also saw sales decline, from 13.7 billion yen in 2008 to 7.8 billion yen this quarter. Operating income declined from a profit of 700 million yen to a loss of 1 billion yen.

However, Sega's Pachinko business reported net sales of 19.6 billion yen, up from 12 billion yen the previous year. The business also reported an operating loss of 1 billion yen, an improvement on the loss of 4.3 billion yen year-on-year.

Sorry, I fell asleep reading that report.

So let me get this straight, Europe has the biggest sales margin yet they won't release Yakuza 3 over here.

150 000 units for the Conduit? That is surprisingly poor for a game that has been hyped up so much.

It must be frustrating for developers to get such a poor return from a game, especially when the amount of consoles sold is around 50 million.

My maths isn't great, but is that around 0.3% of Wii owners?

Wow.

I know, it's bloody frustrating. I bet Yakuza 3 would sell more in Europe than the Conduit did. I know it's dialogue heavy but it can't cost that much to translate it.

Valkyria Chronicles 2 will boost sales for them, at least in Japan. If they release it here then I will also buy it. If they don't then I might import it anyway, the first was so damn good. They should pour more money into franchises like that rather than s**t like Sonic.

it just needs subtitled.

naff english dubs kill games like that - and take more time, effort and money.

The Conduit is, from what I've read and seen, a huge pile of crap. The controls are awesome, and some good effects for the wii, but the level, character and art design suck, the premise behind the game sucks and it's one huge cliché.

Level design and art direction are what Nintendo do better than anyone else. The wii is a shining example of this!

Hopefully they'll do something good with the engine and I'm always glad to see developers trying to push the wii, but they have to have a good game to back it up. Although a friend said MP is a blast.

Sega's results were going to be bad this year compared to last - no Mario & Sonic, but isn't there one coming for the winter olympics later this year?

SEGA need to rush out another crappy Sonic 3D game to boost sales. i'll buy it in the vein hope its any good. Why can't they just do a 2D Sonic with awesome graphics, cartoon cut scenes and online time trials etc..........???

Mark240473,

150,000 x £30 per game.....

Now lets see..... that's about..... £4.5m!!!

I think Sega/High Voltage Software did more than break even there, regardless of the hype 'The Conduit' generated that it was never going to live up to.

More responsibility needs to be taken from publishers/the media in this respect
