Activision would like to raise game prices further

Retailers supportive of high-priced titles, consumers willing to pay
Activision is confident in its current product pricing strategy, and CEO Bobby Kotick would like to raise game prices "even further."

The company recently confirmed that Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will carry a RRP of £54.99 when it releases this November, while the COD: Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Pack will retail for £119.99. Meanwhile, upcoming releases like Tony Hawk: Ride and DJ Hero, which ship with unique controller peripherals, will likely carry price tags that push £100.

During an earnings call yesterday, Activision executives were asked about retailers' reactions to the company's pricing strategy.

".. On the pricing, we've had for all of our launch titles in the back half of this year, some of which contain peripherals, as you point out, very strong retailer acceptance and support for all parts of our plan, including our merchandising plans, our marketing programs, and our price points," said Activision Publishing boss Michael Griffith.

Company CEO Bobby Kotick added: "... You know if it was left to me, I would raise the prices even further," before stating that pre-orders for Activision products were an indication that consumers were comfortable with current pricing levels.

"As far as the premium priced product, you know, collector's editions and things like that, I'd say we're seeing probably more interest than we have in the past on the collector's editions, so that's a pretty good indication of the interest in these franchises."

Thanks Bobby, but if you dont mind, i'll just go rent your games out, because £50 + for a game is daylight robbery!

Expect more people to buy on the 2nd hand market, you won't see any revenue from that!
Posted by Tonyb
If people keep paying it, they'll keep raising it, simple as that!!
Posted by kimoak
I see subscriptions for newzbin and giganews rising if the prices raise even higher. This will more than likely encourage more piracy.
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
quick we must go back in time and kill this ******* before he became the head of the biggest games company in the world.

What a ****. They have a couple great franchise so they diside to rip its fans off. **** that who's for boycotting MW2 in favour of COD4 or Bad Company 2. The first had waay more character than Call of Duty ever did.

**** YOU ACTIVISION!
Posted by ei8hty5ive
Is it the same Activision who recently told Sony to drop the price of the PS3 or they might stop developing for them? They are hypocrites, it's ok for them to fleece customers if they are earning money but others must lose money to appease them. I think everyone should boycott Activisions future releases at launch until they drop the price THEN buy when the price comes down...
Posted by paul_brown940
What would be interesting to see is whether the so called 'casual' market would be willing to take on a higher price point?

Personally I was expecting prices to start coming down as the volume of sales increased.

Raising prices along with the world recession could push the games market backwards in terms of total revenue as people buy less games.

Also, if less people buy full priced games then there will be less second hand games around which will in turn cause their price to rise aswell.
Posted by Blackest_Waltz
Looks like I'll be buying that second hand. And £20 for DLC? Bugger that for a game of soldiers. I think they've got it seriously wrong, especially in time of recession.
Posted by minignaz
I think it's bad for them to judge this on pre-orders though, most online places offer a good pre-order price then raise it just prior to launch.

I had no intention of getting MW2, and now I doubt I'll get any more Activision games until they get their act together, or it's second hand/in the bargain bin. It's been a weird couple of years with them and EA, they have completely shifted their stances.
If they want a reason why there is so much piracy, this is a good one.
Posted by Willforbes
i noticed they raised the price by about a tenner for the pc version to £34.99 - you see activision, if pc users feel a company is ripping them off, we will just pirate your game and play it for free, its as simple as that. we are not your console sheep, you have overstepped the mark.
Posted by Mark240473
I really hope that this attitude eventually bites them on the ass.

I'm joining the 2nd hand club.

Tossers.

What annoys me the most is the fact that most COD fans will pay more for it.
Posted by ParmaViolet
Bang on the money.

I can only really see this sort of move increasing the rate of piracy and the sales of pre-owned games....two things that a publisher hates the most.

I'm not a COD fan and the only real Activision title that I've bought in the past is Guitar Hero - but, I won't be buying that (QOTSA track and they give us 'Make it Witchu'?) - so, I can't see me buying any more Activision games for the forseeable future...this has just made that decision a whole lot easier.

:)

Well, I'd like to stick "Bobby"'s head up his ass!
Posted by lawless1891
Activision keeps mentioning the MW2 RRP will be over £55 which keeps the game in the news loop and all of us outraged and talking about their games on these news stories and forums ,and so now when its finally released and shops are selling it for a £44 the majority of gamers will say to themselves "see i knew it wouldn't be £55 its ONLY £44 BARGAIN"
So Activision get their £4 price rise and are still gods in the eyes of the masses because they only raised the price by £4.

Here is how twisted COD fans can be if you mention you dont agree with Activisions pricing policies

(quote)
Anyway, the price it is for the zombies alone is more than worth it in my opinion. And f**k you i hope your parents die slowly of aids if you don't agree.
Posted by Dajmin
Absolutely. Of course publishers and retailers approve of a price hike, that's how they make more money. But not if it hurts sales. £50 for a new game is already appalling, even £40 seems a bit steep, but I appreciate all the people who are required to make games these days.

It's definitely a sure-fire way to ensure more pirate copies get used than retail.
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
This is true, but most COD fans i've had the displeasure of meeting are complete meatheads.
Posted by DrRickDagless MD
I cant help but feel that we're all just pissing in the wind. Companies like Activision will do what they want and no boycot will be big enough to cause any pain to their wallet. You talk to most people buying MW2 in HMV around christmas they wont even know who activision is.

The only thing we can hope for is the industry to level out a bit and allow devs not to need/want to be under the Activision umberalla.

EA realised that they needed to improve there brand just to get some respect back. They didn't need to but I applaud the atempt.

As a group myself and friends have decided not to get MW2 this christmas. Mainly because we have other games we are looking forward to more.

LEDERS your on the ball. that's just what i do with lovefilms.com. it's saved me a fortune in just the few months i have been renting. games like force unleashed are an evenings entertainment but i would have forked out 40 quid for it. i could name many more i would have bought then sold on ebay a month later. cod 6 will be normal price in ASDA / MORRISONS i can gurantee it. i would never, ever pay £55.00 for a game no matter what it was. apart from resi 4 :? oh! what about that £75 copy of super star wars imported for the snes i bought. at least it was on a nice hefty cartridge, good old value for money, those were the days

He'd be an idiot if he didn't want to raise his profits. Are all of you so stupid that you don't know about capitalism? Take your heads out of your arses and look around.
Posted by bmaindj
They say that the pre-orders taken suggest they can charge higher prices. What they probably forgot to mention was that most people have had this on pre-order for most of the year when it was down at a reasonable price of about £40.

It's disgusting what they are doing but once MW2 hits the selves people won't care about an extra £10 if the game is as good as it's being billed to be.

It took well over a year for the price of MW1 to come down so unless you like waiting that long for it most will end up getting it anyway.

Hey look guys, a story everyone can agree on, hath hell frozen over? Now we can all dance round the maypole with daisies in our hair, going la la la laaaa la laaa la.

It’s not very astute to announce that they would love to charge consumers more than what they are paying now for the same product, for the same cost of production, in the midst of worldwide economic downturn. I can see it from his business side, of course you would if you want to make oodles more cash, but you wouldn’t publicly announce it the way he did, you’d just slip it in, blaming raising costs, less revenue and so on.

On a customers viewpoint though, which in this case I am, I just think he’s a thieving ****ing ****.

Posted by Tonyb
It's got nothing to do with raising profits or Capitalism...what people are saying on here is that enough is enough with this blatant greed.

In your world would it be OK to charge 80, 90 or 100 quid for a game so long as Activision can increase their profits for bonuses and shareholders?

Sure they're a company like others that are there purely to make money but there's profits and then there's taking the piss...like others have said, they can go to hell, I definitely will not be picking this up until it either falls in price or is on the 2nd hand shelf!

Capitalism thrives on an open, competitive market, what this man is attempting to do via his little speeches is drive up the RRP of a computer game product in general, in by doing this he is declaring to his competitors in the market “we’re going to raise prices, why don’t you too?” which is effectively price fixing.

Bobby Kotick needs to be punched. In the face. And another area that is inappropraite to mention. Before being choked on his own money. Greedy basta*d.
Posted by ParmaViolet
I'm pretty sure that most here understand capitalism - but, it really doesn't work like that.

There are plenty of reasons why a lower-priced title will sell better. A good example is Guitar Hero: Aerosmith and Guitar Hero: Metallica.

When GH: Metallica was released, they dropped the price of GH: Aerosmith - this price-drop caused the older title to outsell the newer one considerably (I've heard it was a factor of 3:1, but I can't confirm that). At the end of the day, if you can sell a product for £10 to a million people, it's better than selling the same product for £20 to 250,000.

I know I'm not the only one that buys most games when there is a considerable price reduction available, even if that means waiting. That's nothing to do with being 'cheap', that's just about value for money - and most games are not value for money.

EDIT: Also, if I am to wait to pick up a game at a lower price - surely that makes it more likely that I will pick up a pre-owned copy?...therefore, the publisher gets nothing.

:)

Its things like this that make us consider piracy. I don't think they realise, but if activision complains about piracy ever again, the hell that will rain down on them will be massive.

This guy is an utter idiot, you dont tell someone you are going to raise prices if they might release this knowledge to the gaming world. Fair enough you want to a bit more money, but if alot less people are buying their games then they won't make more money.

I think ill be getting all their games preowned from now on. As long as the money I pay doesn't rreach them, I'll be happy. I personnaly won't pirate as I think its morally wrong, but the next step is preowned so I'll take it.
Posted by footieharry
during the time where people have less money going spear and during the summer where people speand thousands on holidays and just befor christmas where loads of people are in the red money zone putting a game up to £50!!! its stupid NO SALE/.
Posted by ricflair
This guy comes across as a total dick. Especially after his Sony price drop statement.

But with a practical hat on, games used to cost £40 last gen, in fact games have always cost £40+ on consoles. (£60 for SF2 and £70 for Virtua Racing on the MD - I know these were cartridges though!).

In real terms games are cheaper now than they have ever been, a price rise has to come at some point, do people really expect games to be £40 forever? £40 in 1995 is £57.63 today; and in 2001 was £49.58 today.

The dude from ubisoft (I think) said he expects costs for AAA titles to double next gen - how is that going to work if the RRP stays the same?

If games' RRP prices don't rise, despite inflation and increasing costs, its no wonder people try and farm out cheap crap on the wii that costs nothing to develop.
Posted by jihadjoseph56
Good thing as MW2 is the only Activision product I'll be buying for the next few years.
Posted by The_KFD_Case
Yep, pretty much. Looks like MW2 will be the last Activision game I buy first hand for a while if this general price increase plan is carried out. I just love how Michael Griffith states that there was wide acceptance by the retailers of this price hike. Yeah right. As if he would say otherwise, and even if the retailers do think it's a good idea I, as a paying customer, very much disagree. I won't pay that much for any game. Period.

I've increasingly turnded towards the second hand market for my console purchases and will continue to do so. As for my PC purchases, if online registration and/or DRM makes second hand purchases a dubious option then I'll either forego those games or wait for them to hit the discount bin.
Posted by svd_grasshopper
hes saying he'd raise prices even further than £55 as if were getting it good at that.

its the retailers that will lose out. anyone with half a brain can hunt down their game for much less. so must be the retailer thats picking up the slack?

they already lop £10 off them.
Posted by joemikey
I'll only accept the case angrily but they have to supply free DLC. That would only be fair.

In fact, there should be 2 versions of the game, 1 being the cheaper version, but you having to pay for DLC. 2, an expensive version where you get DLC for free.
Posted by ParmaViolet
Actually, aside from all this - that's not a bad idea. I know there are the occasional 'Game of the Year' editions, but recieving a code that will get you the DLC for free when it arrives is a pretty cool idea....it'd certainly make me consider a CE over the standard one - much better than some rubbish plastic toy or night-vision goggles.

:)
Posted by Jez7
The answer my friends, are casual + indie games.

You might have some reservations, but games like Peggle, Plants Vs Zombies, XBLA and PSN games are the future.

The more these developers fancy-up these 'AAA' titles, the less space there is for levels and what not... especially on 360 and Wii. You're probably going to wind up getting less for your money...

Oh well, we always have play.com and shopto.net to try and get the game cheap. And we can rely on GAME to give us MW2 for just £39.99 (when you trade in MW1, a kidney, 6 teeth and some bone marrow)
Posted by jazzy_p
Lucky im not buying any of those games then...
Perhaps the games industry needs to sit down and consider the fact that putting millions of pounds into the newest graphics engine does not make the game good by any means.
...I have to say though, I dont remember SFII being £60..I was only 10 at the time, but still that would have blown my head off.

Luckily i seem to be getting most of my games cheap after a few months.. I wonder if that has to do with the low number of ps3 owners..so they want to shift the games.

Whoever it was who posted that link to thehut for the Arkham Asylum is a god and i thank you from the bottom of my heart.

That is factually flawed. Any previously all-but guaranteed order that is lost is still a loss even if the company in question still makes a profit - large or small. That the loss of X amount of sales may not be enough to really bring the company to its knees is another matter.
Posted by Sniper_Fox
You keep paying over the top for games, they will keep milking you for all you're worth. Luckily it's only Modern warfare 2 I want from these *****.

Note to all, stop buying limited editions that cost a arm and a leg, you are making things a lot ****ing worse for the rest of us.

They did the same with COD:MW1. Priced it higher than any other new release and kept the price artificially high. I got a copy for PC recently on sale. It's OK - but not the best game ever.

I'll be doing the same for this - I'll wait until it's cheap enough.

Valve however have been experementing with pricing games lower and seeing if they make more money. I read that they made more money from Left 4 Dead on PC with a half price weekend deal than they did from original release.

Quite simple really. If four times the people pay half the price = more money!

(bows)

I thank you...seemed too good a price to keep to myself (demo tonight on Live - unfortunately, I won't get to play it until Sunday).

I do remember SF2 being £60 on the Megadrive, I don't think it was as expensive on the SNES though (Grrr - they got it much earlier too!).

I also remember Afterburner costing £60 on the Master System....seems ludicrous now.

:)

If all games had solid graphics, gameplay that was uber fantastic, had a lengthy single player ONTOP off online (which is the only thing fecking devs care about these days) didn't over charge some DLC and gave out more single player DLC or like the old days actually have bonus unlockable modes and all that. I may consider a teeeny price hike but this gen other than a handful off games and especially anything published by Activision is not worth it. (Sorry im an FPS freak, i like CoD, but i still think people give the CoD and especially MW1 way more credit than it deserves)

I ain't buying MW2 cause off the price off 45 everywhere, i havn't spent more than 35 for a game in years and my average spending on a new 360 or PS3 game is 32.95 from shopto.net so i ain't gonna start spending more now, like my one whole non purchase will make a difference on probaly the to be fastest selling game off all time

If their gonna hike the price i want the game to have it all. Games these days either have the uber graphics with lack off game, or shit graphics but amazing gameplay. Either great single player with decent length and crap online, or great online with a tacky single player. or whatever lacks comes out a week later for a fiver on live or psn lol. Why can't we get a complete game package anymore these days (btw i aint speaking for every game out there but majority)

ha, well raise it all you like, i only buy games once they go down below £20, because it usually only takes a few months now.

not only that, but most are 2nd hand.

now games on demand services like steam are where i spend most on new releases. but the higher the prices get, the more i find myself in CEX.
Posted by G00N3R
I'm not a huge COD fan, but I did like MW1, so I'm sure I'll play MW2. But I'm not paying £55 for it. If that's gonna be the price, then I'm more than comfortable waiting 6 months or so for the price to drop. Last time I checked the release schedule MW2 is sandwiched between Dragon Age and L4D2, both of which will keep me entertained for a long time :)
Posted by The_KFD_Case
Agreed. It's a different game but I remember buying Diablo II back when it was released for more or less the same price a similar game would be sold for today upon release.
Posted by kratosfenix
I will definitely not be buying any brand new games from them, pre-owned all the way now. This is just about raising profits, but don't they make enough already?
Posted by ricflair
SF2 was £64.99 on release on the SNES (first 16Mb cart I think). My imported MD version cost me (my parents for my birthday!) about £80, plus £10 for a genesis adaptor. I used birthday money to get two six button pads.

I don't buy the argument though, that if you half the price you will double the sales or more. It might work for short term deals on older games, but I don't think gaming's penetrated the mainstream enough got this to work on a game like MW2.

I haven't paid more than £39.99 for a single game on my 360. In fact loads have been bought for less than half that a few weeks after release, cheap second hand or preordered for £30.

Oh, and don't forget what Bobby said a while back

I was just waiting for someone to make a comment like that, Lawless1891. The difference being that I pre-ordered this game months ago at a discounted price. Sure, Activision still get my money for this purchase but they only get what *I'm* willing to pay for it and not what they are trying to force upon me.
Posted by ParmaViolet
Jeez - I stand corrected. I didn't own a SNES until much later, so I never had to fork out for SF2. I think we got SF2 on the Megadrive when it was released here and I distinctly remember it being £60. Afterburner was the same thing as the SNES SF2 as AB was the first 8Mb cart, I think.

Still, they were cartridges....N64 games were always much more expensive than the PS1 counterparts.

Yeah, you're probably right there. My example of GH: Aerosmith probably wasn't the best, because it obviously sold at the standard price on release...the price-cut obviously helped sales though.

I'm the same, there are very few that I will buy at full price as games will offer differing amounts of entertainment. £40 for something like Forza 3? - yes....£40 for something like Force Unleashed? - hell no.

I guess you could say that MW2 will provide a gamer with literally 100's of hours of entertainment and justify its price tag, but that - to me, at least - makes this all the more cynical....how much will GTA5 be sold for??

»Oh, and don't forget what Bobby said a while back

So you not interested in even trying to wipe a smile of bobby's face that's fair enough .
I'm not an anti COD activist i just don't like the way Activision are using this game as a golden goose.
Like i said at the beginning of the thread this whole COD pricing news loop is just a form of advertisers public manipulation trick .
You wish to raise the price of your merchandise you announce the price will rise to £55,outrage is caused for months getting said merchandise talked about ,remember all publicity is good publicity.
The game is released and everywhere you see it advertised as COD MW2 RRP £55 you find it for £44 you think your saving almost £10 BARGAIN your happy Activision very happy a price rise and everyone thinks they are the caring games company because they listened to the fans and dropped the price.
Posted by The_KFD_Case
Interesting, but the damage may already be done and besides since I wasn't privy to that conversation first hand it means I have to trust that it was only meant as a joke. No such trust currently exists between myself and the relevant parties.
Posted by The_KFD_Case
If you are asking me whether I'm content with paying 31.03 GBP for MW2 for the PC, then my answer is, yes. I'm content with that price as it falls within my internal acceptable price range for the perceived value of the item. 25-35 GBP for a game - PC or console is my general acceptable range. 40-45 GBP pushes the boundary and I begin to go in to greater debate with myself whether the game in question has enough desirable traits in regards to my personal gaming tastes and desires. Even if I want a game I often delay the purchase decision once it reaches 40 pounds. I don't mind buying Activision products in principle as long as it doesn't seem like a blatant rip-off from where I stand. That goes for other gaming companies too; it's business and the door swings both ways - it doesn't have to become personal although it can (and does,) at times.

P.S. I disagree that in this instance "all publicity, is good publicity". If this thread is any indication of an overall reaction in the gaming world then it may end up doing more harm than good in which case it was a faux pas.

HAHAHA, oh how things turn out eh. Like we didnt see this coming.

I can totally see it from their point of veiw, i mean who doesnt want to make more money? "Hey we have a massively popular franchise lets hike up the price and milk even more money from all those suckers that we know are going to buy it MWAHAHAHA"

The thing is they will carry on doing this until more and more people realize they are getting ripped off and not getting value for money. Only then will they start avoiding their products. That point hasn't come yet but it will, oh yes.

I apologize in advance to anyone offended by my next comment. Apart from Bobby Kotick.

In sayin that most of the stores where I live will probably end up sellin it for about 45. Still pricey tho no matter how good the bloody game is!

If games start going up in price, then nobody will buy them.I certainly won't.I hope that will be the case and teach the greed of activision,et al a lesson.Love the COD games but if companies are going to take the smeg i will just not bother with them.

Time for a new hobby,methinks!

How can they think it's a good idea raising the price of a game that is just an update (old game engine) from COD 4. I could maybe understand if they'd spent as much time investing in a new game engine and making it look half as good as KZ2 but they haven't and it isn't. So for me I'll stick with COD4 & WAW with my zombies between those two games I have more than enough COD to last me a couple of years more.
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
i think the rise in MW2s price is really going to **** it over. If the guys that consider gaming a hobby won't pay £55 for it, do you think people that just do it from time to time for a laugh are going to bother.

I think part of the wiis popularity in terms of the casual market is not only the ease of play, but the price. most new wii games can be bought for less than £30 if you shop around a little.

I can see the servers now full of spoilt brats and basement dwellers.

This'll be like GH3 - WT ones beloved by the series faithful the others a bit of a pariah.

I can see this coming back to bite them. Sure they will get away with raising the price of MW as it is one of the most anticipated titles of all time, however if they raise the price of all their other titles I can see the sales dropping off big time. Take Guitar Hero for example, they have already practically destroyed that as a series, if they raise the price of future GH games then I can't see anyone buying it, the same for Tony Hawk.
Posted by Dajmin
They're doing this because they know CoD4 sold bucketloads and they know the sequel will do the same. If they can get the RRP increased before launch, they'll get the diehard fans paying through the nose for it.

So while I was planning on getting MW2 for Xmas, if it comes out at £60 or something instead, I sure as hell won't. When's Operation Flashpoint 2 due out? :)

I think COD games offer me personally great value for money,i was as happy as a pig in sh*t with W@W until i realized Activision's plans for it concerning map packs and how they finally have now turned the online MP into a bi-monthly episodic zombie demo for there other game Wolfenstein.
And the way they arranged said map packs to make the MP game unplayable if you don't pay your £7.99 bi-monthly subs and download the map packs. But i know i'm just a whining tight fecker who doesn't get enough pocket money
And so this years offering is off the menu for me and could be for a long time.

Price going up will mean less people buying, less people buying means less profit, less profits mean they will put the price up...

This isn't going anywhere good.

If that 54.99 is for the pc version I will be telling game to keep my pre order. I would also be doing the same if I had ordered either of the console versions.
Anything more that 35 quid for the pc version is too much. Even at that I think games are way too expensive. £20-25 for a pc game and £30-35 for a console game would be better. Look at Wii game prices roughly £30.
Posted by roger4000
£55.00 + map pack 1 = £62.99 + map pack 2 = £70.98 + map pack 3 = £78.97. no thanks! now, how do I flash my 360 again
Posted by Sleepaphobic
with astraweb and pay 11 bucks per month. its a fixed price too so it wont rise.
dont really want to say this but im so pirating this game. if the online is worth more than 5 min of my time (as im sick to death with cod4 mp) then i might buy it for ps3 6 months down the road 2 play with my friends, pre-owned of course.

Put that in yer pipe!

All that Guitar Hero and Wow money just isn't enough is it?

Makes me sick. Activision have become the worst company in the game industry...game ma ybe amazing but there attitude sucks and its disgusting how much rubbish I see them quote time and time again.
Posted by tungst3n
I love the COD games but I might wait to get the next one on preowned. Games should be cheaper not more expensive. MW2 might have massive costs due to high production values but it would make a profit at £30 never mind £55 quid.

And its only the standard edition I have pre-ordered!
Posted by goomba_lover
everyone can complain but i guess with games like MW2 people will pay... though almost everywhere are offering it for pre-order around £45...

I always wonder if people make games with peripherals in mind because they know they can push the price up...
Posted by vulcanraven01
Unlike some, while I can't wait for MW2, I'm not stupid enough to pay £55 for it.
Instead, I shall gladly wait until I either find it sold for around £35 or simply pick it up pre-owned.
This is the only way these companies will learn, otherwise you can expect other to follow.

Are you kidding me? Activision, you need to wake up. If your so called increase in price is due to the recession like you say then how come every other developer out there isn't increasing their prices as well? It also makes me laugth how you think your other franchises are going to sell as well as the Modern Warfare games. What is so special about your games in particular that justifys this ridiculous pricing? Talk about being arrogant. In short, you know Modern Warfare 2(and only Modern Warfare 2)is going to sell like hotcakes and you thought you'd be extra greedy and rip people off to raise even more cash than you would have done already. Who the f%&$ cares what the retailers think? It's the consumer that has to pay the actual cash. I will be buying Modern Warfare 2, but certainly not at your inflated, unrealistic, rip-off prices. I will be getting it for 45 online, and thats the absolute most I would ever be willing to pay for a standard copy of any game. F&*% you Activision.
Posted by Mr S0L0 D0L0
I'm just glad that I put in my pre-order back in March when it was priced at £34.99. I don't know what else to say because there are so many ways to look at it but I'll guess I'll just be the consumer here, This is a joke, we already get ripped here compared to the USA, tax laws or not we have to pay more for the same and Activision with a new Guitar Hero every week. I'm just glad that the only Activision game I've ever been interested in buying is CoD and only Infinity Wards CoD's and tbh I think personally that CoD:MW2 will be worth £55 (You'll still only pay £45) if I look at CoD4 I got over a years play out of that without getting bored (with the help of the map pack) and still play it on and off so hopefully MW2 will be the same.
Posted by MPH
I've only just picked up WaW for the 360 as the price up to now has been a rip off. The only reason I decided to buy it on the 360 was because I have friends that play on the Xbox only. I got MW1 on the PC when it came out quite cheaply and granted it's a good game, but no way in hell would I pay £55 for the next iteration on a console which will be inferior to the PC version in nearly everyway. Bugger paying £35 for the PC version too.

To memory I cannot EVER recall paying that sort of money for a game on the PC... and I've never really paid more than £40 for a console game... other than the time I spent oodles on Turok on the N64 and an import of Soul Blazer on the SNES.

It's safe to say I will not be picking this up for a loooong time.
Posted by Samus
£54.99! How much is an Xbox 360 thesedays? Even though I hate them I'd rather save up for one than pay £54.99 for ONE game. Bobby Kotick. His name sounds like a dick anyone. He can raise prices for Guitar Hero and Call of Duty but trust me it ain't gonna work idiot because people will not pay those sort of prices for one game unless there deluded
Posted by The_KFD_Case
I fail to see how deciding that the game is simply not worth the price tag - retail or otherwise - and consequently deciding to wait is not "getting a grip" on the situation. That it may not be the way you want to deal with the situation does not render it any less legitimate for others to pursue.
Posted by blacktail
The worst part about all of this is that if MW2 is successful at this higher price point, then it encourages other developers to do the same. For an example, just look at XBL arcade games - the pricing structure was originally supposed to be either 400 or 800MSP for games. Now, the 400MSP price point is almost obsolete, whilst 800, 1200, and 1600MSP (admittedly these are still quite rare) games are more common.

I preordered MW2 months ago for £45, which, granted, isn't too bad. However, I'm about to go cancel it on general principle. I didn't buy COD4 and I managed to survive without it; I'm pretty sure I'll get by without MW2.

Right now Activision are testing the water - if people still buy it in droves then they'll keep charging extra for it. If you really want to make a point, don't buy it at the higher price point. It's a simple concept

I am seriously considering not buying this game, i have seen the many gameplay videos on it and they all look superb, but then this price thing comes in. It is no as if i dont have the money to buy this, its that my principles work in the complete opposite directions. If Activison were to sell this for the normal £40 MMW2 would still make many millions more than any other game ever released. I just dont want to willingly hand my money over to greedy pigs....i understand where they come from, bt it isnt as if they would loose money because they sold it at a normal price, all they are doing now is creating even more haters, fans who were once loyal are beginning to pull away, this is how i feel, the game industry grows bigger and bigger and with that everything to do wth it becomes much more of a rip off
Posted by AlphaOneZero
it's a guarentee that i'll buy MW2, because i can't fault Infinity Ward, but activison.......

Activision are d!ck heads!

you never saw rockstar doing this with new GTA's and they are some of the biggest games of all time. Even there DLC pricing was brilliant for what you got.

I really hope this puts people off and sales dont do as well for activision, i know this wont happen but it would be amusing to see their plans go down the toilet, like they havent made enough money off of the last 2 CoD games.....not even EA have raised game prices....I also hope no one else decides to follow suit with popular franchises. MW2 has already spoiled the run up to xmas with the lack of releases lets hope they dont cause a rise in game prices.

What gets me is, is that they're doing this during a huge economic crisis. Do Activision want to go bust or something? Not only will they loose customers who refuse to pay these prices, but they'll also have those people who are overly desperate to get these games, and spend all the money they have on them.

Activision have made some great games over the years- looks like it's all gone to their heads....

F*CK YOU ACTIVISION!!

Remember everyone; this is the moment, that one point in time where Activision took over from EA as the Evilest Dev/Publisher EVER.

If we just sit down and allow this shit to happen, we've only got ourselves to blame. This is a point of principle for all gamers. PC gamers typically enjoy cheaper games than console gamers, with the payoff being generally a cheaper, more problem free experience for the consoler. This is a point of principle for console and PC gamers alike. The RRP of games in the UK, and indeed any where else is expensive enough, and for UK gamers to be targetted exclusively in a f*cking test of pricing strategy is beyond the pale. I want many of the games Activision make, but I will play the waiting game, I will buy them cheap as I can, I will even buy second hand, to deny these *******s my money on principle.

Take my word for it, this is a turning point. We're looking into the abyss, and Bobby Kotick is looking back. Don't you DARE blink, or you deserve to pay more.
Posted by Ilikerice
totally agree with everything you said. if only you could also buy second hand map packs.

Agreed, but at least they are trying to justify that ridiculous price with a piece of plastic/hardware as a USP.

Raising the RRP to £55 quid for a recognised and much loved franchise is genuinely profiteering, and just plain wrong!

Love Infinity Ward, hate Activision. Leave CoD to Infinity Ward, stop releasing a guitar hero every month of the year and... what else do Activision publish? The prior mentioned are the only series that I've bought. I rented and was left disappointed and erm... Quantum of Solace was okay but if it wasn't Bond I wouldn't have played it. Seriously, I am aware of the games Activision publish (thanks to the studios that they have acquired) but that's all I've played. I wonder when they'll consider charging 1600 Microsoft points for demos of their games (or whatever it'd cost on PSN or PC)
There was a time that I saw EA as evil because they were, releasing crap games year after year (Need for Speed anyone?) but they've got their act together somewhat. When Dead Space was released I didn't give it a second glance because it was an EA game but my brother bought it and it's one of the best games I've played this generation of console, I really enjoyed it and hope they release another one but that doesn't mean that I would want a new one every year.

You will find that the CEO of any publicly traded company will often say stupid stuff. Their number 1 concern are the shareholders (unless they're going Chapt. 11) He's a doofus as are most CEOs. No big surprise. He doesn't know gamers and doesn't care. Their bottom-line will tank and he will be on the chopping block.

I'll wait a year, I'm in no hurry, and buy the game used for 15....if it's even worth that....

I agree with mosts of the posts here but to all the people who say it won't make a difference to the company if we don't buy it at launch and buy when its price dropped as they'd be still making money (And they won't go bust one person posted), they have got it wrong. The point is if we make a stand, Activision will first and foremost KNOW that we don't agree with their increased pricing, secondly they WILL be earing money but MUCH LESS than they should have (We're not trying to make the company go bust, only be fair to the consumer).

I have 2 words for you to think about... Footballers and politicians....If we don't take a stand now they will keep taking and taking until it's £100+ every game. Like the example of the footballer, it was only not so long ago when proffesional footballer got paid £200 a week now Ronaldo is romoured to be paid £250,000 a week. If people are going to keep throwing money at Activision (and footballers for that matter) they aren't going to say no...

Viva the revolution!

Activision say we are happy to pay £55 for a game becuase of pre-orders are so high.

Point A: Its only £44.99 to pre-order becuase retailers pretty much always knock £10 off the RRP

Point B: Its Modern Warfare 2!! Off course we are going to pre-order it. Its the biggest release this year!

Activision have us over a barrel when it comes to this game. So instaed of not buying we are just going to swear and shout when we pre-order it saying things like:

"F*cking Activision! Just cause you know i want the Fricking game you jack the price you a**holes."

But if they think they can sell any other game for more than RRP £50 (£40 in shops and pre-orders) then i'm pretty sure they will lose a lot off money cause it'll be another 2 years before IW make another game. And Guitar Hero is losing its appeal. I mean GH 5 barely has any changes, it seems like the devolpers off GH can't be bothered to make it anymore.

Modern Warfare 2 to get online subscriptions?

Wednesday 17-Jun-2009 12:01 PM

MMO-style service detailed by supposed Activision survey
Future Call of Duty games could come with an MMO-style subscription service, granting subscribers extra options and early access to map packs.

That's according to a mysterious Activision survey doing the rounds on Destructoid, which mentions a CoD service that would "enhance the multiplayer experience and provide exclusive access to a group of gameplay enhancements."

These "enhancements" would include early access to expansions and betas, exclusive character skins, game modes, enhanced stat tracking and "support for competitive play."

According to the survey, the MMO-style service may come with a monthly fee attached, or it could come bundled with a copy of Call of Duty for an extra fee.

Hopefully then, if this service ever comes to light, it's simply a bonus for Call of Duty players willing to pay for more content... and not just another way to make money from the community.

Mike Griffith, President and CEO of Activision Publishing

"In addition, we further strengthened our Call of Duty World at War offering through a new downloadable map pack, which sold more than 1 million maps in the first seven days and to date has already surpassed the 2 million mark, exceeding results from our previous map pack.

Beyond direct accretive revenue generation, this extends our shelf life, helping to insulate us from the used game market and in turn allowing us to hold pricing longer".

Pachter: Activision MW2 price "is a test" News

News by Robert Purchese

Analyst Michael Pachter reckons Activision's controversial decision to raise the price of Modern Warfare 2 has nothing to do with a weak pound as the publisher has claimed.

"The price increase is a business decision," he told Eurogamer, noting that the pound is worth more today than when COD5 launched last year.

"Activision knows it has a 'hot' game, knows that the market will pay an additional 10 per cent, and has decided to increase price accordingly."

Pachter thinks the question of whether this is fair is "a difficult one" to answer. Games, he explained, are cheaper to buy today but contain better graphics, gameplay and online functionality. And the latter service, while free to users, costs Activision to provide - although Xbox 360 owners must pay Microsoft for the privilege.

"My guess is that this is a one-time test for Activision, and that they will re-think the strategy after seeing if it angers consumers," offered Pachter. "If there is no consumer backlash, I think we may see higher pricing on other games, regardless of the GBP/USD translation rate."

And, he added: "The repercussions could be significant and lasting. If Activision is successful, we may see increases for other 'hot' games in the future. We see tiered pricing to the downside for more casual games, so why not tiered pricing to the upside for hot games?"

Activision, in case you haven't noticed, raised the suggested retail price of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to £54.99. Retailers may only take this figure as guidance, but the bump will be felt nonetheless.

And it's not just MW2; Pachter suggested keeping in mind the price of the Guitar Hero franchise, which has generally gone up. Band Hero, he adds, will be more expensive than GH World Tour, and Tony Hawk Ride and DJ Hero will cost a considerable £107.99. And on all platforms; no discount for PS2 and Wii any more.

What does Activision have to say? "I'm afraid we don't comment on our product pricing strategies," a spokesperson told us this morning.

"This is the year that Activision raises prices selectively for several games," concludes Pachter. "and the US increases don't have anything to do with foreign currency translation."

Marketing ******** gamers should stop being a part of
Pointless crap you do that PR suits love you for
Words: David Houghton, GamesRadar UK

As gamers, we like to complain about the practices of big business. Every time a small but pricey piece of DLC appears, we're up in arms. Every time we're offered a crap trade-in price for a game, we reach for the pitchforks and light up the flaming torches.

But the fact is, there are much worse practices around, and we ourselves promote them. They're the sly hype-spreading, sales-boosting tricks that turn a simple game into a full-blown event, and worst of all, they exist only because we make them happen, either by buying into them over and over, or even by actually accepting them into our gaming culture.

Watch out folks. This is the marketing crap that we are responsible for.Heres a link enjoy.

I've got friends who pirate everything they can lay their grubby little hands on, but put out a game with a little plastic batarang(not the UK one mind, but the US one, it has a leather covered little bookie with it, aparantly  ) or another Blu-ray Terminator disc in a silly plastic robot head(that'll be the 3rd BD T2 then?) and money's no object. I'd tell them that these extra bits of tatt cost pennies to manufacture, but then this is the only way the publishers will ever make money out of them. :?

PS, this price hike might well work with a game like COD-MW2, but then what about everything else? Most games don't keep their full RRP for nearly two years, even Halo3 had it's price slashed less than two months after launch. Or maybe that's their plan. :?

Hypocrites, asking Sony to lower their prices then Activision raise theirs.

Bring on more games like BF: 1943.

Of course they'd want to raise prices more, they're a business, they'd make more money from charging more. And with a game like CoD it's going to sell well regardless of cost, so... well, it's up to the consumers as to how much they can physically sell a game for, what are we willing to pay for a game?
