Gaerne G.Ara Shoes (09) | $198.49
BikeRadar verdict
"Supremely comfortable, race-ready Italian clipper-inners"
Gaerne are a big noise in the world of two-wheeled sports footwear and can be seen on ends of legs everywhere from Moto GP grids to Tour de France stages. The G.Ara is their latest mountain bike shoe and it boasts some neat features.
Firstly, its one-piece construction saves weight and is laser perforated to allow airflow around the shoe. It's ultra cool but does let the wet stuff in – but then, it’s summer isn’t it?
It’s also got Gaerne’s Adjustable Instep Closure System (AICS), which takes the form of ratchets either side of the large pad on top of the shoe. Moving it from one side to the other dramatically changes how the shoe feels and lets you find that optimum setting.
The tongue is perforated and extra padded, which adds to the comfort factor. The soles are race-stiff carbon numbers with decent size rubber paddles for off-the-bike grip.
Power transfer is superb and the fit is good even for the broader hooved. For a minimalist race-style shoe, the G.Ara is remarkably comfortable and more than up to an all-day-athon. It's available in two other colourways in case you favour something that less resembles a football boot.
