14 monthes to save any money with the lifetime subscription, either the level caps at 200 or they are planning on releasing one hell of alot of free content to make that deal worthwhile. The game would seem to be worth it for a while for the intriging charecter customisation and generally innovative design thats been promised but 14 months might take its toll on the wow factor this game seems to be relying on.
As a warning to anyone considering getting the lifetime sub immediately - play it first.
I got my beta key yesterday, created my character and was then bored before I even levelled up. Unlike stuff like WoW, Guild Wars or City of Heroes, the newbie experience is dull as hell. There's nothing that made me want to keep playing and I uninstalled it after about 20 minutes.
The other thing that jumped out at me is that it seems to be really badly made. The "tutorial" doesn't tell you the controls or give you any decent info about what you're doing and even the patcher has 2 errors in it (which I reported since clearly nobody else did).
Now I'm not a big MMO fan anyway, but usually the first few levels are a good laugh. This was horrible.

Just wanted to point out that the NDA is still in effect. They can sue you if they find out who you are.
Gotta loveb these 'I'm in beta and it's crap' posts - seeing as the NDA is up NOONE can confirm what he says without breaking it..
Besides if it's anything like CoX the 'starting area' boring or not isn't the first WOW! impression from the game it's the 2/3 hours you'll spend making your character in the first place, and seeing as the game lacks any rigded class system, dissiding what powers to start with will be a long time too..
All the power gamers will claim it's 'boring' anyway once they hit cap during beta, they always have, but just by reading the forums over on the CO site a LOT have already disided on picking up the lifetime or the 6 months discounted sub at least..
NDA relates to actual game content, not general info.
After all, you can look at the website and see it's a comic-style MMO with customisable characters. It's reasonable to assume you need to complete quests.
I've not posted anything about the character creation process or the game world.
That's one for you to argue with Cryptics lawyers.
Just wanted to say though that whilst I'm not disagreeing nor agreeing with what you say (you can risk lawsuits, I'd rather avoid them).
If you were so bored before you even levelled up that you only played for 20 minutes, then there is absolutely no way that you completed the tutorial. In which case, your comment about it not properly explaining the controls is null in void, seeing as you never actually got to the end.
If you want to discuss this further though, why not put your opinions up on the actual preview forums? That way atleast we can discuss this unrestricted, and the devs can actually have an opportunity to address the gripes you have.
That is afterall, as a beta tester, what you're meant to be doing.
Beta testing is way too late to address the structure of an entire section, it's for bugs. I am signed up at the forum, but since the community didn't exactly embrace me when I posed my first questions I decided not to bother.
My problem is that a tutorial needs to go "here's the controls, go spend a couple of minutes doing that" then give you a big shiny reward for doing it along with instructions for the next part. That's where it fell down for me. Can't get specific without going into NDA areas, but suffice to say I was left feeling sort of aimless. Which is not something a superhero should ever feel.
The City of Villains tutorial, on the other hand (which I also beta'd and is the best comparison) was pushing you forward from the start. It suffers the standard MMO issues later on, but the tutorial is really well done.
I did report the actual faults I found though, so I reckon I've probably done more than most people.

Its beta testers like you that make far too many tested games crap. If you dont report any and all problems then they will still be there. A beta test isnt a demo. Furthermore it is never to late to change the game, the forums would raise hell at a delay but a few lines of better dialogue and some modified tutorial parts shouldnt take more than the several weeks left till release.
