Sonic will be "fixed over time" - Sega

And more 2D games are possible, says Sega marketing man
The fallen-from-grace Sonic the Hedgehog franchise will be "fixed over time", says Sega's Sean Ratcliffe.

Speaking to Industry Gamers, the VP or Marketing said that mass criticism over Sonic's latest outings is "warranted" and Sega is spending "a lot of time and effort...discussing how we develop Sonic.

"The quality is something that will be fixed over time," he said. "It's not something where you wake up one morning and say, 'You know what, we're going to improve our quality on this franchise,' and it magically happens. A lot of hard work goes into striving for quality.

"We're constantly trying to improve the quality. When we were in Tokyo recently there was talk about several Sega properties and how we can best make sure we're constantly pushing that quality bar on Sonic. ... Yes, it's always a challenge to raise that quality bar, but our competitors are trying to put the best product out there and we're no different."

Last year's hedgehog instalment, Sonic Unleashed picked up 5's and 6's all over press and was criticised for its sluggish werehog sections and frustrating level design. Surprisingly, Ratcliffe reckons it was only the "hardcore" who thought Unleashed was a bit pants.

"I think Sonic Unleashed was very well received by the kids," he said. "There was some talk about the werehog aspect, the slower pacing and more combat-oriented gameplay, but when we go out and test this stuff and sit down with the consumers, kids actually like that.

"I think older, die-hard Sega fans who grew up with the franchise and the first Sonic the Hedgehog associate Sonic more with 2-D side-scrolling super fast, and they liked the daytime gameplay, but when it came to the slower paced gameplay they were fairly critical of that, and that's fine - they have their opinions," he added.

And will the hardcore ever get the big-budget 2D Sonic game, ala New Super Mario Bros. Wii, that they're after?

"The answer is yes," says the Sega man. "We're constantly looking at our classic IP, be it Sonic or anything else. And now we have different avenues open to us to deliver that." Fingers crossed...

What I would like to see Sega do, is make a brand new 2D sonic game, and stick it on XBLA/PSN. It would sell loads!

well the first part of recovery is admitting you have a problem, so it's good to see Sega acknowledging that recent Sonic games haven't been up to standard, at least.

P.S. Sega, make a new Jet Set Radio and Shenmue III

I hope "over time" doesnt mean about 10 years or so because I can't wait that long for a good Sonic game. The last one was Sonic Heroes, but I was about 9 back then so every game was good to me...

I agree. There was a poll in the forum of is sonic (and Mario) past his best, most people seemed to say yes to Sonic. If Sega could do to Sonic what Capcom did to SFIV, it would be great.

One really true amazing Sonic game would probably 'fix' him. If Sega are going to use Sonic like Nintendo use Mario, they've still got to still have a really solid and pure 'Sonic' game every few years, then you can put him in crappier spin offs.

And change his ****ing voice please! I can see why Nintendo don't have their core characters talking. He sounds like some kid from my old MASK videos back in the 80s.

They can prove they can still do good Sonic 2D games- as seen in Sonic Rush and the 2D Daytime sections in Sonic Unleashed. Mind you, I wouldn't mind a Sonic Adventure 3, as long as they didn't try to go too OTT with it...

Sonic Rush was almost a return to form ... but how good was Sonic CD!

The last decent & best version of the game IMO!

It was only 2D but with the time traveling the levels could swap around & the variety of game play was much, MUCH better than any incarnation since.

I always feel it got overloked as it was on the ill-fated Mega-CD but it was a gem.

Get Sonic back to his routes ... I enjoy playing the orignal on my iPhone more that I have any of the new games in the past 10 years!

Sonic 1,2,CD, 3, Knuckles: 2d, simple, fast, fun, colourful, full of robots, animals and had great music (some of the 8 bit ones can be added to that list too)

Pretty much every Sonic game since it went 3D: rock music (wtf?!), talking Sonic with "attitude" (why?!), gimmicks (swords, werehogs, WHY?!) and HUMANS.......as far as I remember from the early Sonic games, he wasn't on planet Earth.
Now he freely talks to humans in the games as if he is now on Earth.

Sonic needs a reboot. Remake 1,2,3,K,CD into one massive HD 1080p, 60fps adventure for PSN and XBLA and the masses will be happy (but don't ruin the music!)

is you want a new 2d sonic go buy a ds and give sonic rush a go.

Best sonic game in years if you ask me.
Posted by kimoak
Well, it's definitely sustained a lot of 'Damage over Time'

sonic went down hill when they stopped using the midi music.

and put it in 3d

and made him talk

and turned him into a werehog

and hooked him up with human (oh the ***** jokes i have in my head)

and.........

keep it largely 2d like unleashed but use an art style more akin to the mega drive days. super paper mario and new super mario bros showed that there is nothing wrong with the old style

a PSN eye-blazing 1080p remake of sonic 1 please. totally redrawn, but nothing added... though maybe a cell-shaded option once you complete the game.

the original had the most polished feel and the levels were the best - greenhill, starlight, spring yard and even the dreaded labyrinth and scrap brain zones. 8)

and a 1080p NiGHTS while were at it. :D

Drop stupid on rail Sonics...that are so boring.

Why not just make some old style 2d Sonics...which will beat anything Sonic has appeared in for the past 10 years or so.

I'm not being funny or anything but Sega must be fairly retarded. I can't remember how many years have gone by (must be more than 10 now) where they've released 3D Sonic after 3D Sonic - all of which have been ill-recieved. And after each of these releases the whole gaming community cries out for another 2D Sonic.

Instead of listening to all these people - and I'm talking about the vast vast majority of people old enough to remember 2D Sonic, they just go ahead and make yet another 3D Sonic game and promise "this one will be better"...and it never is.

Get your damn act together, Sega. You're killing the franchise that got you where you are.

I completely agree. Sonic just does not work in 3D. Make a new sonic in 2D and make it like Sonic Pocket Adventure from the NeoGeo Pocket Color and they would be on to a winner. The only problem is that much of the Playstation Generation would not entertain the idea of a 2D game although that does slowly seem to be changing, helped in no small way by SF4. To be honest I think many games are better in 2D....

i find it hilarious that no ones played any of the fantastic DS and GBA sonics which last time i checked were 2d, and especially in the case of Sonic rush and its sequel pretty much the 2d sonic games everyone keeps harping on that they want.

They exist people.

also there is a fan made HD sonic 2 remake. find info on it here

http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=12056

its pretty damn good and they were last time i checked looking into redoing sonic 1.

Hmm...

Why do people CONSTANTLY say Sonic Unleashed has 2D sections?

A side scrolling game doesn't automatically make it 2 dimensional!

The days of Sonic 1,2,3 etc were 2D!!!

Sonic Unleashed however is NOT!
Posted by stedman
We know. but its wanted for home consoles as well.
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
fine download an emulator for the wii and play em on that. ta daaa. done.
Posted by roland82
Playing Splosion Man reminds me of the on 2D Sonic games. If only SEGA would take a leaf out of Capcom's book.

Also more Jet Set Radio please.

Great, but I want a brand new 2D sonic game made exclusively for the consoles, How good would it be if they modernised it in a similar way to how SS4 was done?

I must get sonic Rush though as I have a very long plane journey coming up and for some reason I never picked it up when it was released. I still think Sonic Pocket Adventure is the best sonic game released so far so I will see if rush manages to better it.

They should do it in the style of Mega Man 9, get some of the original designers back and limit them to Mega Drive specs.
They should then copy Capcom's and Rockstar's example of rebranding with their Resident Evil and GTA franhises respectively by calling it Sonic The Hedgehog 4.

I'll be fair and say I liked the werehog sections of unleashed.... until they passed the 5 minute mark, at 10 mins I was gnashing my teeth and at 20 I was willing to put a hole through my telly to make it stop!

Sonic has never, and will never work in 3D. A new 2D Sonic game would be a definite purchase for me.

Hear that Sega? Money!
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
a new jet set raidio would be awesome. I heard a while back that there were plans to make a new one for the wii.

perfect console for it is you ask me.
Posted by Curzo
Seconded! :D
Posted by ricflair
Thinking about it, if they simply must go down the 3D route, a 3D sonic MIGHT work with motion plus. If you controlled him in the way you control the plane on Wii Sports Resort- that's pretty responsive and I think will be much better than controlling him like a bloody car!

But it was the feeling of speed that made Sonic 1, 2 etc really great at the time and the controls just don't work in 3D so far.
Posted by wrightandrewjame
SEGA it's time to program like it's 1991!
Posted by chainsawgerbil
i didnt mind sonic adventure 1, it was different but enjoyable, sonic adventure 2 played much better but had the horrible knuckles levels then it all went to hell controls just got very random deaths and half the time you fall through scenery , just horrible

and whats with this sonic games must be blisteringly fast thing??? in the first 5 sonic games he wasnt that fast tbh, you had to build momentum to get him going, look at bubsy the bobcat to see how speed can ruin a platformer
Posted by jas6004
I like the old Sonic games but what i really want is a new Jet Set Radio and most of all, an Arcade perfect version of Sega Rally and Daytona, the two most playable driving games ever. They done a fantastic job with Outrun so come on Sega bring em out. PLEASE.
Posted by greatno
Sonic blazing speed in the originals? Pfft.

Alladin ran faster than him.

The speed didn't make it, it was a bonus but the level design was what was really the best.
Posted by eddiehitler
I've just thought about the irony of all this "bring back 2D Sonic".
10 Years ago we were waiting with baited breath for his 3D debut and demanding a 3D game, now we're begging them to stop lol.
Posted by chainsawgerbil
they could make a very good 3d sonic but theyd have to pretty much forget the style of about 10 years, sonic adventure 2 almost had it if theyd just kept it sonic in the 3rd 1 and no humans with a refined feel it would of progressed, and i actually liked the chao element and that was optional

instead we got heros  some stupid focus tested idea poorly executed crap and theyve been terrible ever since

theres a difference between originality and a gimmick for the sake of a gimmick

all the cartoons and other media seemed to effect the designers ideas which doesnt help
if nintendo had done the same all ninty fans would be playing cpt lou albano galaxy!!!
dont think it would be quite the same
