"Subtly cut lightweight jacket that keeps all but the worst at bay"

The Velocity has light, waterproof and breathable Entrant DT fabric that's tailored with rangy pre-bent arms and a deep drop tail.

A two-way zip is storm-baffled and the Velcro adjustable collar is snugly deep with a soft bit for chin cossetting. The hem is draw-cord elastic but cuff closure is a bit fiddly. Two deep pockets bracket the chest, and being part-meshed can be used for venting if left open. Finally, it all crams weeny into a separate mesh bag with a strap and carabiner for versatile accessorising.

I bought one of these expecting the usual excellent Montane performance that I have experienced from several other graments from their range - how wrong I was! The breathability is awful. A gentle 'errand' ride - a round trip of 20 miles - resulted in the inside of the jacket being so wet that the beads of moisture formed into rivers that ran off it when I removed the jacket.

What's worse is that where I purchased the jacket from www.walkhigh.co.uk say that it's more breathable when it rains and less breathable when in dry conditions - rubbish! Surely the opposite applies! Anyway, if you are considering buying a jacket for BOTH waterproof ability and breathability don't buy this one. The Entrant DT fabric is, in my opinion, no better than a plastic bag. I would opt for a jacket made with Event fabric which in my experience dumps all the moisture you can possibly produce whether it's wet or dry outside.

The DT fabric has an independantly tested min MVTR of 8,000g/m2/24 hours which is amazing performance at this price point although admittedly the performance of the breathable eVENT® products is around two to three times as great, the price also increases roughly in proportion with the additional performance.

The DT fabric has excellent breathability in its class and for around £85 from most outlets this jacket is a bargain and performs fabulously in most situations.

Its worth bearing in mind that ALL breathable fabrics provides at lease 'some' resistance to the flow of moisture. So, when zipped up with a limited freeflow of fresh air and the rate of creation of vapour exceeds the throughput of the fabric there will inevitably be a build up of moisure laden air within the confines of the jacket. In cooler weather this effect is actually less apparent because the body naturally sweats less and since rain has a cooling effect this does in fact help to reduce the amount of moisture produced inside the garment. There are also huge differences between the amounts of vapour produced between individual people.

For a wind cheater that is shower resistant there are much lighter and more appropriate garments in the Montane range such as the £40 Montane Featherlite Vélo which is specifically designed for the cyclist. However, if you are looking for a very lightweight and easily packed (to about the size of an orange) fully waterproof breathable jacket for under £90 you will find the Velocity extremely hard to beat. If you can spare the extra cash and have more demanding requirements then the Montane eVENT® Stormrider is indeed unbeatable and surprisingly cost effective typically selling around £145 or so.

Science has yet to come up with a fabric which is all things to all people so until then its a case of get good advice, read the specs and be honest with yourself about how you intend to use the garment and how sweaty you tend to get and pick the most appropriate garment(s) and there should be absolutely no reason to be dissapointed any garment from the Montane range...
