Bethesda publishes Wii racer

Archer Maclean's 'Wheelspin' to push hardware further than any other racer
Bethesda might not be that keen on developing for Wii but it's got no problem publishing games on the format. Wheelspin is described as a "futuristic racing game" and it's being developed by Archer Maclean's studio, Awesome Play.

Here's some powerful PR: "Whether you play in Solo, Race, or Battle Mode, you will find yourself racing around unpredictable race tracks at exhilarating speeds of up to 650kph! While Solo mode challenges you to beat times to unlock stages, discover short cuts, and find secret spanners dotted throughout the levels, Race mode throws you into a frenzied race against seven other cars across tracks that twist, turn, and launch cars through the stratosphere. Battle mode is an all out test of aggression versus mobility as you use an arsenal of weapons at your disposal in an all-against-all battle."

"Wheelspin was designed exclusively for the Wii - with the intention of pushing the hardware further than any other Wii racing game to date. You have to see the graphics moving to believe its coming out of a Wii - the visuals rush past smoothly at 60 FPS all in widescreen 480P mode", said Archer Maclean. "We are very pleased to be working with Sean and his team at Bethesda, many of whom have been involved with my previous titles going back 20 years".

That's some bold claiming going on there. Shots soon to prove it, we hope. In fact, first shots below. What say you? Looks a bit like Rollcage to us.

Some mighty big talk there. I think i'll keep an eye on this one.last good racer on the wii was excitebots. Not sure if its even got an EU release date.

"You have to see the graphics moving to believe its coming out of a Wii" -Wouldn't we rather see a video instead?

Is it coming out in 2009 or is it another game that I won't be able to afford in Q1 of 2010.

I hate Modern Warfare 2. No, really, i'm not buying it.

The guy's a great programmer so I can well believe he has produced something very special for the Wii...brings back memories of his other great games like Dropzone and IK!

I thought it looked a bit like Rollcage as well, but it doesn't sound like it has weapons, therefore I'm not interested.

EDIT: Ooops! Maybe they do, I'm interested again, course it still depends that the weapons are like, simple Wipeout style ones are a bit boring.

apart form the mention of battle mode. Which states that it has weapons.

looks alright. Screenshots rarely do wiigames justice though. Hope theres a vid out soon.

Hmm. It looks like it's running on an N64.
Like they said, I'll believe the hype when I see it.

It looks a hell of a lot better than Dirt 2 on the Wii for sure but it still looks like an early nineties PC racing game but I'm sure the devs will do a good job of making it a fun game!!

Excitebots hasn't got an EU release yet. This is pissing me off more than anything else to do with the wii at the moment!

I can't really be arsed with all the import shenanigans - just release the game!! Mental robot frogs, gameplay like excite truck but with better multiplayer? What's not to love.

This looks promising so far.

Is this the "massive" title Bethedsa alluded to pre-E3? Thought it was gonna be Fallout Wii. :(
