New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Preview: Four times the fun
So it turns out that Mario's creator has wanted to make a simultaneous multiplayer Mario game for years and this is IT. Four players platforming through traditional Mario levels all at the same time. Sounds obvious, so why the wait?

It was actually technology that held back Miyamoto's dream before, apparently, as he told E3 attendees that older consoles' lack of ability to zoom out and render all those sprites smoothly and clearly prohibited this type of game from being made.

Whatever. Here it is, we've played it, and it works brilliantly. We got eight levels to try out featuring a good mix of overworld green stages, ice, caves, desert and one stage among the clouds, each one with their own unique challenges.

Nintendo hasn't messed about with the traditional Mario formula either. You just turn the Remote on its side and play. All the buttons, like previous Mario games, are where they should be.

The only hint of Wii motion comes from a spinning jump, performed by flicking the Remote upwards subtly. But it was more a pain than it was useful - pressing the jump button hard (as you do on tense jumps) sometimes caused the Remote to register a spin jump, which accidentally sent Mario to his death. We were surprised to see some proper hardcore platforming too. Considering NSMB on DS was criticised for being too easy, we expected some mum-friendly action.

How wrong we were. Swinging platforms, rotating blocks, giant spinning cogs, moody Thwomps and new fireball-throwing Koopas made sure we memorised the Mario 'death' jingle.

The new items are cool too. A cap with a little helicopter blade on it sends Mario flying into the air when he does a spin jump. It's not only useful for reaching high platforms but the propellers also cleared screen-covering fog in one level.

The penguin suit lets Mario shoot balls of ice that freeze enemies in mid-air, forming a new platform for the plumber. Pretty cool. And of course Yoshi is back with his enemy eating power, just like the good old days.

And in the middle of all this craziness, the new multiplayer mechanics worked well. The screen pans out as players drift further apart, but not too far. Players who wonder out of view when the camera is fully panned back die.

Get over it. This function makes vertical levels a particular challenge, as you have to keep up with each other to survive. If you're co-operating you'll find players having to wait as Mario mums struggle up the more challenging sections.

But what's cool about NSMBW, is that you can choose to play it either co-operatively or competitively, all without having to change an option on a menu screen. Players collide into each other, bounce off each others' heads and each player has their own life count.

We chose to play co-operatively and even then 'accidentally' knocked others off platforms or stole their items.

But play against each other - trying to be the first to those coins or items, or the fastest through a tough platform challenge - and it could be an awesome laugh. Like two-player Mario Bros. was all those years ago, kicking those upturned enemies off the screen. But, just like that '80s classic, NSMBW is perfectly playable in single-player too.

The final game needs eight to ten incredible and varied worlds and a handful of modes that really explore the multiplayer functionality. If we get this we could just be looking at one of Mario's all-time greats.

Sounds like a good laugh. I'm up for that.

Looks pretty damn fun.

The only concern I have now is that when one player gets a powerup/dies, the screen freezes in traditional Mario style. Unfortunately, this isn't exactly that helpful for other players, especially when one of your teammates lands on a mushroom before falling into an enemy before falling into an abyss, meaning three screen freezes in quick succession.

They didn't mention it in this article but they explained it at E3. The screen doesn't freeze when a player dies, they return floating in a bubble and it's up to the other players whether they release him/her or not.

Looks good, enjoyed the DS version.

What I mean is that split second freeze occurs when something to one of the players.

IE. In SMW or whatever, upon touching a mushroom, all enemies and other animations would freeze whilst Mario does the growing animation accompanied by the noise.

In this game, the same happens, which is fine except for the fact that there's three other players trying to time jumps and stuff, and it could really throw you off.

Hate to break it to you, but the fire-throwing koopas aren't new. They're way back in Super Mario Bros 3, in the secret area in World 2, where you find the magic whistle
Posted by NaththeNarc
Well I don't know what you are talking about because the magic whistle in world 2 was part of a level and you had to fly up and over to a little secret bit, and there was certainly no fireball throwing koopas there. I can't remember where the second place is you find the magic whistle, but i'm pretty sure I have never seen a fireball throwing Koopa. Never saw one as a kid playing my NES, and didn't see any when I brushed off my NES last month and played through SMB1,2 and 3.

ANYWAAYYY, this looks awesome, will have to buy a Wii for this and that awesome hand drawn japanese side scroller I can never remember the name of.

Is at me or is anyone a bit annoyed of the two toads? I was so happy when this was announced, i have wanted a 2d mario adventure since the gamecube on a non-handheld system! Being brought up with mario have always seen toad as an individual character and not toads multiples, just like with yoshi and not yoshi;s! why couldnt we have four uindividual character like in mario bros 2? please take note Nintendo as i cant be the only person thinking this! What other four player games is there with player 3 and 4 having to be the same person but different colour?

Halo 3?

I agree though, couldn't they have used the princess?

I'd love to have seen players 3 and 4 being donkey kong and diddy kong. A Mario & DK platform game incorperating enemies and levels from both series, that would have been awesome.

I'd love to see Nintendo take the DK series back and make it their own again. RARE's rendered platformers were great, DK64 wasn't quite upto Banjo standards and far below Mario64 but I think Nintendo could produce a decent title for DK, forget the terible Barrel Blast and rhythm based Jungle beat, give us a DK platformer - 2D or 3D, I don't mind!

Surely the Mode 7 and Super FX chip techniques in the SNES days could have panned the screen in and out though!? :?:

I'm sorry, but this game looks like a gimped version of LBP. Lazy

It looks really fun to play, I can see me and some friends playing this for hours, I wonder if it has online play too?
Posted by vamos
Online capability?

Just wondered, as getting the missus to play this is highly unlikely...

Get over yourself dickhead. Regardless of your lofty position in the Sony Defence Force you know this game will be a laugh.

If they can take this online I guess WiiSpeak will be a necessity.
Posted by kimoak
I would expect Wiispeak yes. Sounds like it would be a riot too. I have a whole houshold here that will be playing this game with me. I really cannot wait!

Oh yeah, this game is bugger all like LBP. If that comparison is used, then Sackboy is a ripoff of Billy from Everquest 2.

This game is confirmed to have no online support, unfortunately.

It seems a local affair through and through.
