Mountain biking legend David “Tinker" Juarez has joined the list of riders taking part in the first Intermontane Challenge.
The former US national champion says he is “ready to rock'n’roll solo” alongside the likes of top Canadian cross-country pro Chris Sheppard.
With a top prize of $10,000 CDN (£5,500 / $8,200 US), the race in Kamloops, British Columbia, has drawn some top talent. Some 300 riders will compete over five days, either solo or as part of a two-man team, on a course filled with epic singletrack.
Race sponsor THULE will hand out Ride of the Day Awards to racers who care more about having fun than finishing first.
Because the race is based in a city, riders will be able to sip espressos at local cafes before each stage or go out on the town each night, before relaxing in pre-booked accommodation.
Spokeswoman Kelly Servinski said: "Don’t let all of the comforts of our event fool you into thinking this race is going to be easy – our five singletrack-based stages will have racers begging for the finish line but cruelly wanting more."
The inaugural event takes place from 27 to 31 July, 2009, and is already 25 percent sold out. For details, see www.intermontanechallenge.com.
