It's a really lovely looking game, without doubt the best looking flight sim I've ever seen with lovely detail on the ground, really nice lighting and an overall very high presentation.
But there's a massive problem with this game. It's one that I find incredible still persists with modern games.
This is yet another game that doesn't allow you to customise the controls. And what we're given are absolutely flawed!!! In a flight game such as this, that clearly can't have you rely on high tech gadgets and scanners, visibility is incredibly important. But to actually look around you have to press and hold down the right thumbstick button, which is 1. awkward and tiring and 2. takes away some of the control you have of the aircraft. While I'm happy for developers to default controls to what suits them, most of the time, because it's about preference, for me they're sometimes absolutely wrong.
What I need is the right thumbstick to ALWAYS allow me to look around. I also need to be able to adjust the speed, the acceleration of movement and the 'spring', or return to centre of the view controls.
For me any game that's based on searching for and taking out an enemy, visibility is absolutely key. This demo has effectively shown me that I cannot play this game. I refuse to be given controls that aren't adjustable to perfectly suit me. Is it really so difficult for developers to allow gamers, should they wish, the option to remap and fine tune controls to suit the best way for them to play? Maybe this problem doesn't affect or matter on difficulties below the highest sim setting, but I'm not interested in playing this as another dumb, simple arcade flight combat game. So with IL-2, thanks for the demo, no thanks for the game! Next... |
