Telltale: "iPhone much more powerful than Wii"

Hmm...
A Telltalle Games employee, speaking on the developer's official forums, has said that "an iPhone is much more powerful than a Wii". No, really.

The rep, who goes by the alias TTG Yare, was commenting in response to complaints over performance issues with the WiiWare version of Tales of Monkey Island: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal.

"Frame rate issues will probably get sorted out eventually, but keep in mind that the Wii is just not a powerful console. An iPhone is much more powerful than a Wii, even," said the rep. Yeah, we had to read it twice, too.

Telltale also developed 'Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People' on WiiWare.

When confronted on the statement, he backed up his claims saying: "I stand by them. The Wii and DS are extremely underpowered and their popularity doesn't remove the hardware limitations."

Apparently, the Wii may have more processing power, but it has less RAM than the iPhone, which "goes a huge way in letting you use faster algorithms", explains Yare. "It's more important than a faster processor," he added.

So that's why 3D games on iPhone look as good as, say, Super Mario Galaxy or Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles. Erm...

so its got nothing to do with them not bothing to calibrate the telltale tools engine at all.

They already used it on sam and max which had the same problems on both the 360 and the wii. Its got bugger all to do with the wiis limitations.

You missed the rest of the quote, where the employee tried to convince people that the sky is green, and that Mars is just a giant basketball...

And the moon is made of cheese.... hang on I think that one is actually true....

Anyway, the amount of ram is not an indication of how powerful the console is. I have an old laptop that has more ram than my desktop, but there is no way on earth that the laptop is more powerful!

The Wii has a far more powerful cpu and gpu and although it has a little less memory it is very fast memory especially the onchip texture ram.

However if they ever get the iphone to do a game as good looking on a large screen as mario galaxy or re4 then wake me up...

The biggest problem with the iphone is its control method capacitative touch screens are rubbish for controlling most games.

That comparison kills his statement full stop.

Exactly what I thought.

The fact that he was wrong about the iPhone being more powerful doesn't invalidate the rest of his statement.

what a prat

Even if it were true it doesn't really matter.

The Wii is definitely a lot less Apple-y than an iPhone. When buying a GAMES machine this particular property is much more important than raw power.
Posted by federicothehouse
They are actually both fine devices, one is a fantastic dedicated games machine, and the other is an extremely capable multitasking phone. As a games machnine though there is no contest... and it is not about raw processing power or RAM size.

After all, the iPhone would WANT to be more powerful, it's about three times the price.

Maybe he means more power per polygon? The PSP is more powerful than a PS2 in those terms, and it is (obviously) a much smaller screen that they have to power.

Either way, no the iPhone will never be a true games system.

ooooh, listen to him go on about 'algorithms' being affected by the RAM. I'm 15, have just completed a GCSE in ICT (4 weeks till the result!) and know perfectly that RAM is a poor thing to use to try and better something. RAM is volatile (temporal) memory, and deals with the actions that the hard drive does. However, as leefear1 pointed out, the Wii's superior CPU and GPU mean it runs games alot better than an iPhone.

Wii v.s iPhone when it comes to games? Wii wins it for me every time....

And? The Wii has already proved its a player against the PS3 and 360.

Try playing WiiSports on your IPhone. ;P

depends what you class as 'power'. If you're talking chipsets then the iphone isn't as powerful as the wii. If you're talking 'power' to get me to spend money on games then the iphone wins hands down for me.

Bet when this guys talks of power, he clearly means the power of the machine.

It's such a daft statement to make when you are supposed to be a programmer. The programmer is obviously a iphone fanboy. :)
