Bethesda "can afford" Bungie's new game

Only biggest publishers can provide cash for studio's next, says Bethesda's Cheng
Only the biggest games publishers, including Microsoft, Activision and Bethesda will be able to afford to snap up the next non-Halo game from Bungie, Bethesda's Ashley Cheng has claimed.

Posting on his personal blog, Cheng wrote: "I suspect Bungie only owes Microsoft two more games and they're done. Halo ODST and Reach and that's that. No more Halo for Bungie.

"You can count on one hand the number of publisher's around who can afford to publish Bungie's next game: EA (via EA Partners), Activision, Ubisoft, Microsoft, and of course, Bethesda. I can only imagine how much it will cost to snag their next title."

Cheng adds that there's one more publisher who could possibly get into bed with Bungie: Sony. "That would be interesting," he says, but "unlikely". It'd be worth it just to see the comments threads on here.

Halo 3: ODST and Halo Reach will be the last 360 Halo games developed by Bungie, the developer told CVG in an interview published last week.

Isn't it more likely that Bungie will stay with Microsoft and release a non-Halo IP on 360? Or start priming a new Halo or new IP for the next Xbox? I don't see them jumping ship to another publisher, doesn't make sense when they seem to have a good relationship with MS. Surely MS would match any offer put forward by rival companies especially as it's the only killer app they offer along with Gears Of War?

Be a hell of a surprise if they did though.

Indeed it would.

Its sounds to me that the Divorce form MS may not be as “amicable” as people think.

That coupled to the fact that hardly any 3rd party publishers are doing exclusives these days, makes you think that a non MS console Bungie game is a distinct possibility.

Plus If I were Bungie, id want to do something completely different to Halo and lose the one trick pony tag.
Posted by Black Mantis
I can't even fathom how many posts that story would generate! I've read Bungie recently moved offices to someplace called "The Bunker" (not sure if it's true). Maybe it's to hide from the fanboys if they did sign with Sony!
Posted by altitude2k
They don't do any favours when they basically ask for trouble to start, do they? No wonder CVG gets a bit of a bad rep as a community...
Posted by gazza_be
Im pretty sure that part of the arrangement of Microsoft letting Bungie go independant was that MS would get first dibs on any new titles. So while it is still possible for them to go through other publishers, it would have to be if MS saw the game first and decided they didnt want to publish it.
Posted by nottsville
I remember reading that too.
Posted by gazza_be
Im sorry, but you have to be pretty damn ignorant to think Bungie is a one trick pony. Halo may be their most successful franchise, but their previous franchises Marathon and Myth were highly acclaimed too.
Posted by Barca Azul
That doesnt sound very independant to me!Either they are or there not!

It would be like Brutal Legend all over again.
Posted by gazza_be
Of course it is. They wanted creative freedom, and they have it now. It really is win-win for both bungie and microsoft.
Posted by Amish McSwegan
im sure nintendo could handle the costs as well.
Posted by Barca Azul
So highly acclaimed, ive never heard of them, I must be very Ignorant.

On the other hand it could be like Sean Connery's early films, perhaps they were good too, but if no one remembers them, does it make them Ignorant too?

What did he do Pre Bond?
Posted by Barca Azul
So......They now have creative freedom, but not independence, is what your saying, right?

If its win win, why didn’t MS keep them signed and give them more license then?

Something not quite adding up!
Posted by nottsville
Oni was pretty cool to, as memory serves!

Um, thats your own problem if you arent aware of bungies games. Im not saying everyone should know, but if your going to make such a claim as calling Bungie a one trick pony, id expect you to do a little research first to save you looking silly.

And yes, Bungie left Microsoft to gain creative freedom. They obviously dont want to be working on Halo for all of eternity. So they now can make whatever games they want, and when it comes to publishers, more than likely MS will be there on hand. It really is that simple.
Posted by StonecoldMC
In a sadomasochistic way I think it would be hysterical if Bungie signed with Sony.

The world could literally implode  .
Posted by svd_grasshopper
sony gives their devs free reign to do what they really want to do.

bungie must be tired having to flog the halo horse all the time by contract. no wonder they done a commando and conquer type game with halo on it. they wanted a change, but had to do a 'halo' for the sales. the game itself could have been any licensed game. a bit like that south park tower defense.

sony takes devs in, listens to their ideas and gives them support.

microsoft think they know best.

they pissed bizzare off at the end, pushing them for an early PGR4 release.
Posted by KMakawa
Bungie and MS had disagreements, which lead bungie going independent, however MS still have shares with bungie, so they do have some type of influence down the development lines, ..This threads article just reiterates what I said in the previous bungie-related article really.
Posted by gazza_be
LOL! Commando and conquer? No. Secondly, Ensemble developed Halo Wars, not Bungie. Try harder.

I remember "Myth". Both I and II, although I only played "Myth I". That was a hugely entertaining real-time strategy hack-'n-slash fantasy game, IMO! I still have a soft spot for the hilarious and brutal Northlander barbarians.

P.S. Sean Connery was the Scottish national contender for an international body-building contest before being cast for the role of James Bond.
Posted by StonecoldMC
Eh?
Posted by The_KFD_Case
Just speculating here, but it might be because that would involve additional licensing costs for MS, which in turn might make MS insist on more control over Bungie's efforts. Now, if MS can get first pick on future titles and Bungie gets more freedom (which may be what it desires,) then both sides have gained something from it without losing too much in the process. MS can be secure in the knowledge that it gets first pick, while Bungie can take comfort in the knowledge that it still has the likely backing of one of the biggest publishers around...And if it doesnt' then it can pander it's product to other interested parties. Win-win.
Posted by Barca Azul
That’s the point though, Im really not that bothered about it, as for me and probably many others as well, they come across as a one trick pony. You clearly didn’t get the Connery analogy did you?

So your saying that to develop another IP they had to split from MS? I can understand that they are probably fed up to the back teeth of an umpteenth Halo game, but surely they could have said no to doing more and still stayed with MS had they wanted too?
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
Oh SVD you crack me up.

Did you know that Halo was originally going to be an RTS on the MAC before MS knabbed the rights and moved development to the xbox. the rest is history.

Also Bungies first Console game was Oni for the PS2. Always made me wish they'd get the rights to make a Ghost In the Shell game as it pretty much was except for the name. Surprised they didn't get sued. Probably becasue it was so damn good.
Posted by Barca Azul
Lets hope they dont do a free radical design then.
Posted by svd_grasshopper
it was pretty clear...

what didnt you understand?!

rockstar said the support they would get for agent would be a big factor in why the chose sony.

they fund the flower dev and gave them support, they give gran turismo's PD they time they need to do the job proper. instead of rushing it out the door like MS tried with PGR. luckily bizzare stuck to their guns and broke exclusive ties once they completed it.
Posted by svd_grasshopper
and?!!

im sure they were fired up about it as it was a brand new IP. possibly less so once they were bound by contract and on their 5th consecutive game...
Posted by KMakawa

You do realize that bungie did not make Halo Wars though, Yes?
Posted by lordirongut
I can't see them going to Sony anytime soon, but I can see them going multiplat. The company has an excellent track record, so people will be eager to sign them on, and the fact that it's such a talented studio will be good for everyone.

Personally I want them to go with a publisher that will give them free reign so they really could go nuts. Also, couldn't Square, Namco or Capcom take them on as well, possibly as part of all their plans to 'Westernise'?
Posted by svd_grasshopper
thats even worse.

MS whoring halo from all possible angles.

still bungie werent allowed to do anything but halo until their contract was up.
Posted by Barca Azul
Id throw Take two into the mix as well, they are very open to creativity, look at Rockstar.
Posted by MrPirtniw
Well if Bungie are tired of doing Halo, let another developer take the reins- as long as they're of the same quality and know how to look after the franchise- fans like me will be happy.

Not exactly the same scenario but look what happened to Star Wars- Lucas should have let someone else write/direct those prequel films.

Tim: "He wanted to buy a Jar Jar Doll."
Bilbo: "So what? Kids like Jar Jar!"
Tim: "But he's shit!"
Bilbo: "What about the Ewoks? Eh? They were rubbish! Noone ever complained about them!"
Tim: "Jar Jar Binks makes the Ewoks look like, f**cking...Shaft!"
Posted by Mark240473
I've just got off the phone with a guy from Sony!

Apparently Sony have bought the new IP from Bungie and it is called 'J-Lo'. You play a soldier dude who has to kill loads of funny alien chaps on a giant ring.

It'll never work.
Posted by The_KFD_Case
Sean Connery might be a poor example for your argument; just take a look at all the other things he has done and been cast in since the 007 movies.

Ugh. Please don't mention Capcom. I was in a horrendously foul mood on and off this weekend thanks to the soul-destroying single-save setup of "Dead Rising". That the publisher/developer failed to make it abundantly clear that the game is designed in such a way as to make it all but mandatory to make multiple play throughs ( remember, just one save slot!) just to complete one of the varied story endings, which may make for an interesting conceptual design, ends up being an angry nightmare for the gamer. I get right fed up with some of those oh-so-clever Japanese game ideas at times. I'm just glad I borrowed a colleague's copy of the game and didn't pay for this..unique..experience. "Dead Rising 2" has some ground to make up for if I'm to hand over good money for it.

Making an RTS out of the Halo universe is hardly whoring the franchise out. Especially considering it was going to be one in the first place, aside from that they got a top notch studio to make it.

When we see Halo team racing or Halo bash, then we'll know its gone to far. (if you get the reference you'll understand what i'm talking about)

Also MS seem to leave devs to thier own devices. Rare is a prime example. If they didnt i'd doubt Nuts and Bolts would ever have seen the light of day or Viva pinata come to think of it.

Halo was always set to be a trilogy anyway. and now its finished and we get a couple spin offs.

i'm looking forward to both of em.

Sony seem to just jump from series to series and drop it on its arse when it no longer seems profitable. enter crash, spro and many other now multiplatform series stage left.

Also if sony are so good to devs how come they keep losing exclusives left right and centre.

Granted they've been really good to Naughty dog and recently MEdia Molecule but you have to wonder how long before we see uncharted, LBP and Killzone on other platforms.

Most publishers are the same at the end of the day - corporations out to get the most money they possibly can. Activision, EA, Sony and Microsoft exemplify this (Activision in particular). There are some exceptions - Square Enix seem to genuinely care about making games over money, but even then some of their current works have been average at best. Namco will publish anything at all (seriously, anything) and Capcom are turning more and more evil business-suits themselves.

The problem is, nowadays games don't have to be good to sell. Look at the Wii and DS, I have both and I love them but I wouldn't touch 90% of their games with a 10 foot pole. This has made publishers so bloated and rich that they don't care anymore, whereas on on anything pre-PS1, a game had to be brilliant (or at least marketable) to get a publisher, because if it didn't sell, the publisher would also be in trouble.
Posted by svd_grasshopper
rare, under microsoft have been a mere shadow of their former selves. they have practically disappeared from the gaming scene.

thank god we havent seen crash or spiro again. would rather have the fresh franchises they came up with this generation any day.

its not all about whoring you know.

and uncharted, LBP, killzone on other platforms... give yourself a break!

No im not saying that. I think its pretty obvious, but ill explain anyway. MS knows how big the Halo franchise is. Its a billion dollar franchise, so they aint gonna let it end any time soon. They need a development team that can keep working on all sorts of Halo projects, and clearly Bungie werent too keen. Hence why Bungie was let go to do its own thing (though still keep a relationship with MS) and MS set up its own internal Halo studio. Obviously MS didnt think it made financial sense to keep both their Halo team and Bungie under their wing, so they granted Bungie's wish of wanting to be independent. This way, MS still has a team making Halo games, still has a relationship with Bungie whereby they get first dibs on any titles (after all, Bungie just want to make games, im sure they couldnt be arsed with the whole publishing side of things) and MS save money as they dont have to keep Bungie going. Its a bit like the Insomniac situation. Insomniac are completely independent, but all their games are still published by Sony. I see the same thing happening with Bungie.

I hope that made sense

I'd have to disagree with you. there has always been a slew of utter shit on whatever console sells the most at the time. Some games in the 8 and 16bit days were just adverts if you will. Doesn't mean they weren't any good. Remember push over . the entire plot revolved around an any getting a packet of quavers back for thier mascot. Was still a corking puzzle game.

Also development costs have gone through the roof in recent years. any big game now costs the same as medium budget film.

The major difference is that gaming has hit the mainstram proper. so there are lots more people out there that want to jump on board.

Most of the wiis diabolical shovelware is stuff thats been ported by third rate devs/publishers from the ps2. at the same time there are some real gems on the system just like all other leading consoles before it. I wouldn't of touched 90% of the PSone/2s games with a 50 foot pole.

Its the price of being the market leader. every two bit hack wants a piece of the pie. Just look at the iphone.

definetly a good move for bungie to try something completly new and maybe even different! at the end of the day they wont lose much, if their next game(non-halo) fails, they can always restart and go back and do a new halo title! bungie are in a position now to do what ever the hell they wont with the massive sucess they've had just like squarenix!would be mad if they went multiplatform or even worked with sony haha imagine the online war lol! 8)
Posted by altitude2k
As much as they want their new IP to veer away from Halo, Joe Public won't know who the hell Bungie are and won't see this new IP's release as that big of a deal unless they can advertise this as "from the creaters of the award-winning Halo series...". It may not be what they want to do, but it will guarantee more sales (which I assume they'll want a lot more).

They're not going to be able to do that if it's published by anyone except Microsoft.

EDIT:

Don't forget that part of the Bungie break away deal was that Microsoft would get first right of refusal. Meaning that they first get to see every new Bungie game and it would only be published by someone else is MS said 'No thanks'. Which I find highly unlikely.
Posted by voodoo341
It's possible. Take Two own the Myth rights. Bungie have worked a lot with them in the past.
Posted by voodoo341
Never mind the online war! Bungie would have to leave America.
Posted by Jensonjet
Bungie were successful with the Marathon series because:
1. It was effectively the Doom equivalent for the Mac, so it had an instant captive audience.
2. As a game in it's own right, it was years ahead of anything around at the time. (ie. the controls and story were years ahead of Doom, which at the time didn't even allow you to look up and down!!!).

Bungie's success with Halo is just astounding to me. I guess there's a lot to be said for being the first big FPS on a new system, with the marketing and backing of Microsoft. But during it's short history the games industry has continued to demonstrate just how fragile quality and success are. No developer is beyond falling out of favour with gamers and dropping from their former heights of glory and success. To me it feels inevitable that Bungie will come unstuck and fail to meet gamers expectation, or for that matter publishers wishes.

In my opinion, in terms of first person shooters, Bungie make decent controls and AI; average game engines; poor looking maps that play quite well; create convoluted storylines with poorly designed monsters and stupid voices... I wouldn't assume for a second that their next game is guaranteed to be a big hit, let alone turn into a franchise.

Timing and circumstance have played as big a part in Bungie's success as anything else. Perhaps this is true of many of the big players in the industry. But I think Bungie are no more likely to create a great game, or have such Halo-like success in the future than any old average game developer.

Using Sean Connery as an analogy of Bungie/Halo wasn't the best choice in my opinion. I think Roger Moore would have made a better example. He had early success as a female-attracting younger man on TV (The Saint), created a decidely average but at the time successful enough Bond, and after that, no one cared about the old, fat, talentless, one-trick-pony, actor! I'm as excited about Bungie's next game as I am Mr Moore's next movie!!!
