Sacred 2: Fallen Angel

Fallen for you
Fantasy conventions are hard to break. It's why, apart from one quirky mountain lion pun in Oblivion, we continue to slay rats in cellars. And it's why we'll forever be tasked with spying on clandestine gambling/skooma/necromancy rings for lazy town guards.

Hack-'n'-slasher Sacred 2 follows these recycled ideas rigorously. As a Diablo clone it's clumsy but functional. Think of the Xbox Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance games set in Cyrodiil and you'll know exactly what to expect: hours of equipment-juggling, loot-gathering, spell-casting fun in a world with more locations than you'll ever hope to see.

Co-operative play is key, which is why the game always classes your status as online. Four player takedowns of the biggest bosses deliver where Too Human failed so ingloriously, and the following bartering-cum-arguing tip-toes towards a hint of that MMO everybody plays on their PC.

But Warcraft this isn't, and Sacred 2 has enough in its coding to warrant praise beyond comparisons with the games it desperately wants to be. Its biggest achievement is that the now-defunct developer Ascaron wasn't afraid to have fun. Collecting 13 wolf pelts and 25 troll hearts is nothing new, but stumbling across German metal band Blind Guardian - who supplied exclusive music for the game - and hunting down a band of roving, microphone-stealing skeletons... is. Most of all, tearing into a pack of ghouls with a scantily clad buxom babe atop a sabertooth tiger never grows old, does it? No. No, it doesn't. Not ever.

Shoddy port quibbles tar the package. Even when installed on a hard drive Sacred 2 has areas where cities load street-by-street, while some stat-crunching features are poorly explained for newbies. And the less said about the inability to pause or to load or possess multiple save files (the nasty side of its 'always online' ideology), the better.

In spite of these issues this manages to be another genre-topper (albeit of a quieter genre) in a month already packed with highlights. Swords, spells and isometric stabbing do it for you? Look no further. Hell, you even get to play as the bad guy!

Review is a bit short. The game does sound interesting though. I really liked what I played of the original Baldurs Gate on PC and was disappointed by the console iterations.

Any actually got this or played it at least?

Somewhat suprised as this game is infact a bit of a hidden gem, and in terms of scale is massive (5.2% complete and 6-7 hours in!). After the dull as dishwater JRPG Star Ocean, quite pleased BUT it is a bit marmite-ish so if dungeon explorers or very lengthy games arent youre bag be aware. :)

Would suggest a rent before deciding to buy. Was really getting into this the first day or so as I do like a nice action RPG. But after about 10 hours with nothing really challenging and far too much back and forwards I got rid.

So does this console game require an active internet connection, or not?

That they score this above Star Ocean 4 sums up 360 World... any game that requires a bit of thought or effort and they just can't be arsed.

Dead Space and Afro Samurai just arrived in my mailbox today! I still await another half a dozen Xbox 360 games, one of which is Star Ocean: The Last Hope. I look forward to getting my own hands on that title and I reckon I'll find out shortly whether I agree with the somewhat low score CVG gave it.

If you like Hack and Slash, this is the game for you.

Co-op is awesome. Trade system works.

This game is like a mini-mmo :)

I am loving it!

I agree with Suivatam109PS3 though I hate to say it as I would like to think all gamers aren't turning into meat heads.
I'm finding I'm an RPG fan first and a 360 fan second, though MS have been trying hard with great success to bring great RPG's and other unique content the players are unwilling to try them and true RPG gamers are a rare thing on 360.
Not that I'm putting down games like Halo I love them but playing online with friends and other people online I quickley realise that most gamers don't have these games for the same reasons I do and would much rahter beat their chests and shout abuse, so my friends and I end up playing offline.
I just wish 360 gamers would try more unique games and give their brains some work aswell as their trigger fingers.

I always expect bad reviews from most mainstream reviews nowadays for JRPG's. I dont take any notice anymore.

Speaking of "hack and slash", Afro Samurai is superb, IMO! I haven't had so many "Oouuh! Ouch! Oh snap! That's gotta hurt!" moments in a game in quite some time. It looks fantastic to boot as well, is a exciting and action packed to the point where you feel like a bad-ass samurai warrior. Plus, it has superb voice, sound and music recordings. Easily one of my new favourite games. If you haven't played it yet I highly recommend it, though I would also recommend you buy it second hand like I did since you can get some games in very good condition and have money leftover for other games.

Afro Samurai is fun in all the ways, and more, that The Force Unleashed failed to be despite similar genre concepts.

i got hooked on afro samurai untill the second to last boss. Which is impossible to beat. Beacause it requires you to reflect bullets back at him. The one system in the game that fails miserably, and completely ruined the game for me. Aside from that i found the enemies to be incredibly cheap at times.

However as a fan of the series and the brilliant performance of samuel L Jackson. I perservered untill that damn boss. Beware KFD, urges to throw the controller through the TV are coming.

On another note being a fan of JRPGs and considering its currently only £25 in Asda is Star Ocean worth getting.

Wish I'd paid attention to the Last Remnant reviews though... that game was dire.

Heheheee! Thanks for the heads-up, Monkey. We'll see if the second-to-last boss manages to have me punching the couch pillows with a primal scream of rage and frustration the way "The Force Unleashed" did.
