Damnation

A steaming pile of steampunk junk
Damnation is a glowing example of how technology in the wrong hands can lead to disaster. Now, when we say this, are we referring to the story, which sees you taking on an army of evil robots in an alternative, steampunk version of the US Civil war? Or are we referring to the fact that Blue Omega have made one of the worst Unreal Engine-powered games we've ever seen? Hmm...

It's hard to believe that Damnation - in all its glitchy, twitchy, and downright fugly glory - was created by the same tech that gave life to Bioshock, Mass Effect and Gears of War. Now, we can forgive the fact that it looks like Gears swallowed a Western and promptly vomited it back out, half digested. After all, flashy visuals aren't everything. What we can't over-look, however, is that Damnation feels so bloody awful to play.

Best described as an action platformer, your time is split between shooting and jumping across roofs. Neither element is well executed, and both feel like absolute chores to pull off. Aiming is loose, weapons are far from accurate, and even if you do score a headshot or two (probably using the sniper rifle, the only firearm worth firing) your enemy won't drop because they're tougher than 50-year-old jerky. But, of course, they can take you down quick enough.

The platforming is equally awkward largely thanks to the contrived controls. Do we really have to hold RB and press a to jump off a pole? Can we not climb a ladder without pressing a? Do we need two buttons for punch? It's such a massive effort to explore the numbingly repetitive environments, you'll resent having to do it; especially when you realise the only reward for exploring is finding 20 useless bonus items. We found most of them, but sadly they didn't unlock a mode that made the game enjoyable.

So, does the left-field story save Damnation from, er, damnation? We're going with 'not one tiny bit'. Although the concept is interesting enough, the characters are detestable 2D cut-outs that wander around looking grizzly, or with their boobs hanging half-out, and spout random hokum with such wooden delivery that every line becomes unintentionally hilarious.

As you plough deeper into the steampunk setting it becomes painfully obvious that the plot is the same, timeless, good-versus-evil guff that you've heard a hundred times before. It all adds up to one (excuse the pun) epic failure.

Thats a shame. Damnation looked like it had a lot of potential to be something really special.

The review did seema bit harsh though.

I also had high hopes for this game. Pushed back so many times it was always heading for bad scores me thinks.

Due to lack of demo I can't comment (and if it's THAT bad a demo is unlikely), but ultimately a lousy game is a lousy game, so it may not be THAT harsh.

I agree, though, on paper it had potential.

Poor 360 owners, you get this heap and PS3 owners get Uncharted 2. Unlucky loosers!

I also had high hopes for this. I there is a gap in the market for this gens 'Chaos Engine'.

Granted it looks crap, but surely you should review it on gameplay. Have you learned nothing from Flicky!
Been playing it this morning, its ok, nothing groundbreaking but not as bad as this reviewer has made out. The aiming is very awkward, but a quick change in the options to low and its not as bad, and as for the holding down RB to jump. wtf you on about?! You hold RB to jump backwards, which is a lot better then having to fiddle with the anologue stick ti get that direction due to the changing camera angles, at least then the game knows what your trying to achieve.

Hate to burst your flame bubble, but its out on the PS3 too. Run back to your one console owning house and weep gently into a pot noodle.

Can someone recommend a gaming site that isn't filled to the rafters with fan-bating, flame-ridden comments and basically just devotes its time to enjoying gaming? This site used to be great, but its just sooooo boring sifting through the swathes of petty comments and empty "news" items, in an attempt to get to the interesting and intelligent stuff.

Back on topic, I thought this game had disappeared ages back. In fact I'm surprised its even being released. I had my doubts about it from day one to be honest; the Wild West may be an interesting setting, but rarely has it been home to a fantastic game.

No flame war will proceed, just mirth and merriment at what a loser you are! 8)

Its glitchy as hell, enemies dont even respond at certain points and then turn around and blast the stuffing out of you. Fall through floors to your death. Get stuck in a Ladder climbing it. Best of all, start floating and fly around the map. :?

   Nice...

Well, this game didn't pick my interest even before, I didn't like the art style at all (and I really like Cyber/Steampunk genres), it looked always kinda boring, washed out, bleh, so it only could have surprised me... but I see that's not gonna happen.

Well, looks like I'll have to wait a bit more for a good steampunk game.

Maybe you should take the danny off of your tag and put fan in it's place. Or even better just take the D off and add the F.

Sounds like a massive sack of steaming garbage.

I had such high hopes for this, and what happened? This is one of the worst reviews I have ever read, (that's the game, not Xbox World). WHY?
So much potential.....
Ah well, we got BioShock 2 to moan about how bad it's surely going to be.....

mate your a idiot this aint a exclusive its on both ps3 n 360.
im realy realy dissapointed they delayed the game like 4 times of a total of like 6 months and the games STILL buggy as hell what the **** did they do in those 6 months play with there balls?
they need to bring laws into place to stop devs from releasing these games and expect full price, i wasted 120 bucks on lesiure suite larry box office bust wich is the WORST GAME IVE EVER PLAYED.
another 120 on xmen origins.
im sick to death of devs being lazy ******s and releasing shit and expecting full price, terminator salvation another PERFECT example.
if you cant be ****ed makeing the game worth 120 bucks than either DONT MAKE IT AT ALL or make it and sell it for 50 instead.
the games market use to be exclusive to quality games now every tom dick and harry can make there own game and expect 120 bucks its ****ed.

Posted by Mar27w
in fact i just noticed if you look at the top of the review even the developer is ashamed to be named, unknown ho ho

Im actually really confused how anyone even from the start thought this could be a good game or even be better then bionic commando which was poorly reviewed by the review given from cvg
