Reggie: We must move on before Natal launches

Nintendo of America's views on Natal and Sony's motion control
Nintendo honcho Reggie Fils-Aime has said Nintendo will have to "move on" and "drive more immersion" by the time Microsoft's Natal and Sony's motion controllers arrive.

Fils-Aime says he sees the competitor's developments as a move to nab Wii's success. "My take on it is that they are now seeing the opportunity that we saw. What they have shown and discussed inherently is not new news to us," he said.

"We have been in this business for over 25 years," continued Fils-Aime. "We have worked with a range of input approaches. We've worked with the range of mechanisms to drive immersion into the gaming experience.

"So for us what we see is two competitors who are looking over their shoulder at what we've been able to do, and are trying to participate," he added.

"I'm not sure when their products will come to the market, but I can tell you by the time that happens, we will have to continue to move on, to drive more and more immersion on the part of the consumer," he said in a recent interview.

Is Nintendo unnerved by Sony and MS's impressive developments in motion control?

Regardless of anybody's personal preference on Natal or the wand, I can't see either of them having half the success as demonstrated by the Wii. Families just aren't bothered about HD graphics like us regular gamers and I can't see them turning their backs on the Wii just so they can have a similar experience on another console.

The mere fact that with 360 and PS3, we'd have to buy a camera (and new controllers for PS3), is just another expense to put off potential casual buyers.

I think both will do okay, and I can understand Nintendo's concern, but I doubt they will be as commercially successful as the Wii.

All Nintendo have to do to spoil the party is drop the price of the Wii when either Natal or the wand gets released. Simples.

I guess it's just good business sense. Since Natal won't be released until well into 2010 (I'd think) if Nintendo haven't dreamed up something new, they'd be looking very stagnant. They've been getting away with the 'same old same old' for a few years now. I still love my old school controller and have been very disappointed by the lack of subtlety in the WiMotes. If Sony come along with something which really works, they'd doubtless wipe the floor with them. So... what will Ninty come up with next?

Nintendo are always on top of things controller wise. look at either microsoft's or sony's control pads, near enough everything you see there was first done by nintendo.

by the time nintendo release their next console (not wii HD) they will of thought of another way of "being in the game".

nuff said.

Maybe Nintendo are a little ruffled by the other two maybe they are just slowly hinting that the new Wii is in development, who knows.

Mark, I'm a "regular gamer" and I'm not bothered by HD graphics either. I've been playing all my games on a 17" portable for 14 years, and in fact, the way that the Wii doesn't offer HD is a good thing to me. If it did, I'd feel like I was missing out.

I doubt that too, but you also have to remember you're talking about a market that doesn't care about brand loyalty and is largely driven by children now. A great marketing campaign, cheap price for a console bundle, and MS or Sony could make some in-roads.

i hope Regginator doesn't think the immersion is going to come from that 'finger peg' they showed at E3!

So gentlemen, you've got a wiimote in one hand, a nunchuck in the other. where's the 'finger peg' going to go?

man that's gotta hurt...

I think Natal would sell well if sold seperately from the 360 because of Microsofts marketing. Sony on the other hand would want to bundle the controllers and the PSEye with the PS3 because I don't think many people would pay the price of the console and then pay for a camera and controllers seperately. And going by Sony's form, they'd probably charge about 100- 150 euro for them.

How many of these 'opportunities' that Nintendo saw had anything to do with this fat prat?

He's a marketing whizz. Miyamoto's been coming up with the ideas, although I'm sure he's helped sales no end.

Kids may or may not have brand loyalty. They can have amazing loyalty, but it is also pretty short term. However, I get the feeling nintendo could bring the price of a wii down a similar level that Sony/MS will sell their motion tech at, with a console purchase required on top of that.

So a £120ish wii for the kids or a PS3 and motion kit at probably north of £300?

And sod the HD. Sometimes I miss the graphical grunt, but for me the wii has been about an entirely different (and very welcome) approach.

"First, how do you satisfy the core while still expanding appeal? And second, how do you leverage your strengths against entirely untapped audiences--to the so-called "blue oceans" in popular marketing speak? ... Provide a new product that actually underperforms on an established industry metric for "progress," and substitute an alternative that typically is smaller, less expensive and easier to use. Initially, the "core" of any industry will scoff. But if the product is right, enough new users will be attracted to form an alternative definition for progress."

That's the wii.

Think of it this way, the 360 arcade costs £129, which is almost 50 less then a Wii. Which will give Microsoft lots of room to take on Nintendo. As for the PS3, well its never going hit the same market as Wii at its current price point.

My self I can see a Natal 360 pack around the 150 mark. That really could be a problem for Big N. Not that I think any one will catch them now.

New Wii coming methinks.

You know, I wouldn't be surprised if we see the following headline on-or-around release of Natal:

"NINTENDO ANNOUNCES THOUGHT-BASED CONTROLLER"

The way I see this, Natal is MS' effort to expand on what they already have with the avatar/dashboard system. It'll fit the gaming teenager's argument to their parents about motion controls on the 360 which gives them the chance to play the "core" games they actually want while giving their parents the exercise they think they need.

Nintendo might relent and go down the Wii HD or WII (that's Wii 2 BTW) route, giving some ground to the argument that's been going from the start, where the "core" gamers want some expansion on what's already a successful system with some room for the proper ground the other 2 consoles already have covered.

Sony, on the other hand, seem to be in their own space. They have room to breathe with the Sixaxis/Eyetoy combo without the alienation risks MS ran with the avatar/NXE addition. I still think they've got something up their sleeve.

It's not a one-horse race this time like it was last-gen. Wii has the motion thing under control, MS has the solid online/HD thing going on, Sony has the Blu-ray/storage angle. There's room for them all right now, and I like that.

If the arcade is £129 now, then a Natal 360 bundle at £150 would mean the Natal tech would be priced at £20, assuming the price of the console itself isn't dropped.

I'd say you've got two hopes of that happening. Bob and none.

I'd say you'd be pushing three figures just for the tech, never mind with the console included.
Posted by oOPuPPeTOo
So you are saying that Natal cost around the same as the Xbox it's self?

This is Microsoft we're talking about.

as dey said it nintendo ar one of the longest survivors of the console manufacturers. ataris gone, commodore is gone, sega is gone :(:(:(:(

they introduced the joy stiq that we hold in two hands and were up to this date de standard input for al consoles.

dey introduced the analogue stick and vibration i think

then comes the wii remote nd now motion plus

now im not a fan boy i love sega, sony, nintendo etc. dont mind microsoft but prefer de others. nd i tink natal might improve on the whole new control style and it looks pretty cool.

hav a ps3 nd im not gettin de wands unless it has sum cool ratchet and clank ting or can b used as de blades of chaos in god of war3 haha

First of all, I completely agree with Mark. At this point in the game Sony and MS are no threat to Nintendo.

Why would Nintendo jump ship at all? It makes absolutely no sense financially. They are mopping the floor with the competition. Why would they feel the need to come out with a new console when this one is still vastly outselling the others?

Do you really think the casual market who already own Wii's will run out and buy a 360 or PS3 now because they also offer motion control and HD? The only one who could even compete out of the 2 would be MS. And that is only really if they launch Natal at a similar price point to the Wii and if people see this alternative motion tech and it clicks with them. I can't see the PS3 competing really at it's current price and then there would be the additional cost of the eye toy and at least one new controller. And then Nintendo could very easily just cut the price of the Wii and then the other 2 become even less competitive.

And then, even if lets say the other 2 are much more accurate than the current wiimote. Nintendo are already releasing motion+ with the sequel to Wii Sports. Which I am sure will sell ridiculous amounts.

Also, this is a one horse race just like last gen. The Wii has sold as much as the 360 and PS3 combined. And Nintendo titles dominate the sales charts. How is that not a one horse race? Even if sales completely halted right now for the Wii it would take at least 2 years for either the 360 or PS3 to catch up.

as said above all the families with wii's are not going to rush out and buy another consol. my inlaws for instance have a wii and wii fit. nothing else interests them as they are not gamers and will never ever buy another consol. what i did witness the other day was though my whole family gathered round my sons xbox playing 100 to 1. this has to be the best and smoothest (online) gaming show to date and wiped the floor with the likes of buzz. we had a few beers and played for 2 hours and trust me when i say to get this time with my son is something else! maybe this is the way forward at the moment and not a lot of fancy control methods.

Anything that gets a family together has got to be a good thing. As long as it isn't a funeral.

Hell, you don't even need a console to have a good time with the family! Never underestimate the power of Monopoly! That game lasts for hours and can save you £100's in electricity bills!*

*It can also start fights.
