Mass Effect 2 - What We Know

Feature: Everything we've got on BioWare's sequel
Mass Effect 2 is out there; it's been officially named, the teaser trailer has released and it's undoubtedly only a matter of time before the second part of BioWare's sci-fi saga is unravelled in full, either on the internet or in magazine land.

Before that though, let's piss in the wind a little and rummage through the interviews and PR blurbs to get an idea about the second game. Possible spoilers ahead then...

State of the galaxy

Much of Mass Effect 2's setting has already been revealed in the Mass Effect: Ascension book, which bridges the gap between the two games.

After the first game's conclusion and the Citadel's attack lead by Saren and his army of Geth, humans and aliens across the galaxy are stunned by the assault.

As the final pockets of Geth resistance are hunted down and destroyed, the Citadel Council is restructured and the human Alliance Navy is left as the dominant military force in the galaxy, no longer number two to alien fleets.

Ascension's mystery-filled plot concludes with the Quarian race (they're the ones in the breathing masks) deciding to send ships off in search of a new home world outside of Citadel space.

The Quarians, who originally created the robotic Geth baddies in the first game, were kicked off of their original home world when their creations went all Skynet. The Quarians now hope to find a new planet to live on, or possibly discover how to drive the Geth away using an ancient robo Reaper - as Saren did in Mass Effect.

The Ascension book also introduces "The Illusive Man", the mysterious leader of the Cerberus group which appeared briefly in Mass Effect 1 and works non-stop to achieve its goal of making humanity the dominant race in the galaxy.

It's said in the book that The Illusive Man and Cerberus have "many other projects to protect" - plus the group clearly appears on Mass Effect 2's teaser website. So the two are a near-cert to feature in the second game's plot.

Shepard: KIA?

The single piece of Mass Effect 'information' released by BioWare has had the entire community in debate ever since.

The debut teaser trailer, if you haven't seen it already, runs down protagonist Commander Shepard's specs and military achievements on a computer HUD. As the camera pans along a rifle and the trademark K7 armour worn by the good commander, we're shocked as the screen flashes 'status: killed in action'. This is followed by a Geth head, which pans up and appears to look down at Shepard's familiar armour.

Has our clean-shaven hero really kicked the bucket? BioWare has already confirmed that you'll be able to carry over character data from the first game into Mass Effect 2, so popular suggestion has obviously pointed to a ruse on BioWare's part. The second game could possibly have Shepard 'going dark' Jack Bauer-style, say forum fans, thus forcing him to fake his own death.

The theory's backed up by the very likely inclusion of the Cerberus group, who aren't happy with Shepard at all after his antics blowing up their research facilities in the first game.

Then again, killing off the immensely customisable and choice-spawning protagonist from the first game could save BioWare a lot of hassle in transitioning over players' characters. And Mass Effect 2 would definitely be made more accessible to newcomers if a fresh character were to be introduced.

To RPG, or not to RPG?

Story gibberish aside, BioWare plans to expand on combat and exploration gameplay portions of the first game, which is good news.

In the shooting department the developer's official announcement promises "intensified combat" and "expanded weapon options". We're hoping some of the work goes on improving the game's shooting mechanics, which were solid enough but could certainly do with some polishing to meet 2010 standards - especially in the cover system department.

As for "expanded weapon options", we can only assume this refers to the in-depth gun tweaking and customisation options available in Mass Effect 1. To an extent slapping various types of ammunition and modifiers on your guns worked well in the first game, but you could easily ignore it. We're hoping for more meaningful, strategic options in Mass Effect 2.

Elsewhere in BioWare's big list of promises is an area that definitely needs to be improved in our opinion; exploration. BioWare's lining up "increased depth of planet exploration" for the sequel, which is definitely good news.

The increasingly tense and to-the-wire doomsday plot of the original never really encouraged us to explore the galaxy ('all life's about to perish? Nah, we're off to explore the Armstrong nebula'), but hopefully we'll get some gameplay nudges in number 2. Non-plot-essential worlds never proved to be very distinct either, which is something we hope the 30-strong team of artists at EA drafted in for the sequel can help with.

Oh, and more of the wicked 80s sci-fi soundtrack, please. Let us know what your thoughts are for the sequel below.

Looks like Bioware are definitely on the right track, fleshing out everything that worked and fixing everything that didn't. Looks like it's going to be a hell of a game. Can't wait. :D

"Quarian race (they're the ones in the briefing masks)"

lol.

Has anyone ever noticed the Mass Effect storyline is very much like Battlestar Galatica? "All this has happened before and will happen again!" I'm not complaining anyway, I loved the first game. And like what CVG said, the music was very awesomely Blade Runner-esque. More please.

I loved Mass Effect, but the sub-plot planet were extremely repetitive and lack-luster. If it weren't for the Achievements, I wouldn't have explored more than a few. I'd gladly trade in all of those worlds for a few more like Feros and Noveria.

Will I be able to give my female character bigger boobs this time?

I think these are fair points. I hope that the game certainly improves on its failings, such as awful vehicle mechanics and an average FPS experience, while balancing the guns (With certain ammo implemented to the best assault rifle in the game I've created a gun that fires snipe accurate shots indefinately without overheating)

Certainly this game can either go slightly higher then the previous game, or make a huge plunge.

I can't believe that in this day and age people still make the mistake of calling games like Gears of War and Mass Effect's gameplay FPS. FPS stands for First-Person-Shooter; games like Halo 3 and Bioshock are FPSs. Gears of War and Mass Effect have Third-Person-Shooting, as in from behind the player. That's a big difference.

The uneducated masses... Go figure.

I can't believe you'd call mass effect a third person shooter. Its an RPG, Combat be damned.

Ahem, looks like bioware are definately on the right track with this one and i already am really looking forward to this. Shame its being released by Ea because i was looking forward to another beefy MS limited ed which just seem to get better and better. Fable 2 aside.

Mass Effect = best game so far this gen.

Can't wait for the sequel.

Have to agree about the limited editions, I really liked the Halo Wars one, quality.

The one for Fable was good when they announced it, but they bodged it up good and proper!

Mass Effect easily stands near the top of my list of favourite games of all time. The story drew me in, the characters were well filled-out, the setting was interesting, you could sort of sympathise with the bad guy. I actually stuck it back in the console last night to have a bit more of a poke around the galaxy.

I'm sure they know what they're doing to fix the issues that the original had, so I'm really excited about this one.

I friggin' loved Mass Effect. You had better believe that I am looking forward to the sequel. Haven't enjoyed an RPG (yeah, it really isn't a TPS) as much since KOTOR.

More exploration sounds much better,i loved going to the different planets hoping for a rare find.

It started getting boring though, more variety needed.

The sequel will be something special i just know it,combat also needs improving and i'll be a happy chappie.

mass effect had crap gameplay mechanics but the story was amazing

If they don't fix the HORRENDOUS, drunk vehicle controls I'm not buying it. I sold this game before I finished it because of those bits.
Posted by Dajmin
Living up to your name there then, huh? :)

Yes, the vehicle controls were a little clunky. They should've gone with more standard FPS vehicle controls for that, it would've worked much better. But you get used to it eventually and there's not that many sections where you really need to navigate tight areas in it.

Hopefully one of the things they'll fix. Although having a wheeled vehicle for planet exploration makes no sense compared to something that can fly over mountains :)

Oh I dont know I had some fun trying to get the vehicle over the mountains I looked at it like those car hill races where you try quick steering rolling backwards/forwards etc just to get grip/momentum.

I knew somebody would say that, but if you read my comment again you will see that I never said that Mass Effect is a TPS. What I did say, is that it has Third-Person-Shooting. But it is an RPG.

Hmm. Maybe I will finally take a friend up on the offer of..acquiring..the PC version. I refuse to pay a single cent for the DRM malware and limited installations crap that EA insists on spoon feeding me with so no money for them. Guess what? I will do the exact same thing with this second one for the PC if I feel like it. I have no remorse any longer where such Gestapo tactics by publishers are concerned. Let 'em get what's coming to them. The really "hilarious" part is that I would have happily paid full premium price for the first title and this upcoming second title if they hadn't forced my hand. F*ck 'em.

Reasons to buy Mass Effect 2:

- more dance floor moves!

- men and aliens getting it on!

- Renagade moves such as making fun of Joker's running abilities!

- Paragon moves such as blowing up entire planets to save them from the Geth!

- lots of in-jokes about Red Rings causing DEATH!

Mass Effect + Me = Good times.

Cannot wait for this game!!! By far my favourite Game (and Books). I do think this article says good things about the future of ME. And I do think that the rough edges of the first game will be nicely polished! Not that they really bothered me in the first game anyway!!! I, like lonewolf2002, quite liked climbing the mountains, and then trying to glide back down using the landing thrusters! :D

Dead on mate. Dead on!!!
