Bungie: Natal wouldn't work with Halo controls

"We would have to figure out what makes sense to use Natal for," says senior designer
Project Natal was one of the more interesting developments to come from this year's E3 but how will FPS developers use it? Or is it not for them? In a recent interview Bungie told us that it's interested in the tech but not sure how it might use it yet.

"I think that Natal has some really cool technology," said senior designer Lars Brakken. "If it makes sense to use it in some way I could totally see it working, but we would have to figure out what makes sense to use Natal for.

"Obviously it doesn't make sense to use Natal for a full Halo control scheme. At least in my brain I can't think of a way for that to work right now. That doesn't mean that it can't work in the future but I think Natal could enhance things. It's so far off it's hard to think about how it could work in a Halo game."

I doubt we'll see any of the major shooters using Natal. Too risky.

Completely agree with the guy!

Implement Natal where it is an integral part of the game design rather than shoehorning it into a game as a gimmick to cash in on a new fad!!

personally i think the most intelligent use of natal would be to keep the 360 controller involved, and use natal for more story based elements such as characters being able to see what kind of mood you're in, and maybe even actually having to talk to characters, ala milo, just without the characters caring that you're sat on the sofa in your underpants.

the advantage of natal is that it can do as much or as little as you want, and can still involve the traditional pad. think about it, in a game like Need For Speed Shift, you could be sat playing the game like you normally would, but it could analyze your head movements and subtly add it to the game experience.

The ability to tap involuntary feedback will be able to work with any game. the science behind facial expressions is detailed enough that it could be used to gauge how scared or excited you are, tailoring the game to your current mood.

We could even be playing gears of war 3 online, where the characters face resembles yours and moves just like yours when you speak.

4 words:

Head-tracking psuedo-3D

Not controlling the motion, just the view. You would never need 3D glasses.

and the gaming world does not revolve around halo either.
Posted by altitude2k
It does at the moment. Same as it will when MW2 is released etc. etc.

What I ment was is that it does not deserve too. Halo wont work with my mobile phone either and I really could not care less.

It would of been interesting, but why change an already fantastic formula.

Check out my eBay auction for a job lot of retro consoles and games

Dosn't work with a pad either.

Mouse and Keyboard FTW!

shouldn't that headline read

'Halo wouldn't work with Natal controls'..instead of 'Natal wouldn't work with Halo controls'

Do you do stand-up professionally, because that sh*t is funny.

Controlling the view with your head wouldn't work. Turn your head 90 degrees and the view might move but you wouldn't see much of the telly.

The more I think about Natal, the more I think it will probably only work as a social device outside of any serious gaming, or at best with Wii style games where the play is restricted.

Don't think this whole motion control thing will work for anything other than novelty tech demos or ripped off wii games. Having used a mouse and keyboard for years for fps it just feels TOO natural and didnt see a single game I could finish first time on hardest settings. So I have to say I prefer a fiddlier controller to actually be presented with a challenge. Hence why my pc is now an mmorpg system only (and charger for my ipod).

gimmick. exposed.

The same way Eye Toy wont work for PS3 FPS. As Sony stated, you need controls for certain things and they learned this from Eye Toy, it sold 11 million units but was limited.

If MS add controls to Natal then Halo may work in a more interesting way. This is why Sony is adding motion controls. Natal is backwards compared to Sonys addtion to its original Eye Toy idea.

With Bungies comment, I think the industry may realise the limitations of Natal such in the same way Sony learned with Eye Toy.

Is this Wiigodboy back with a different name?

The idea of motion control is steadily growing on me after I played Zelda: TP again, but the system still feels too imprecise for most games. I haven't tried Motion+ yet though so that might change. Natal looks cool, but will MS actually support it or will it be like numerous other peripherals in the past? (I have bought far too many of Nintendo's to fall for this trick again, remember the N64 Disc Drive?). Same with that Sony controller. The use in games will sell it to me, not some technical specifications. I bought my Wii for Zelda and Metroid and it was implemented well in both, I just need games like those to make me buy into Sony and MS.

And this man speaks utter sense. If it can't be done properly, don't do it at all.
