PSN cards headed to Europe?

Pay cards finally coming to Europe, according to retailer
Europe could finally be getting prepaid PlayStation Network cards, according to an online retailer listing.

Belgian site consoleshop.be is currently listing prepaid PSN cards - in €20 and €50 denominations - for release on October 1, the same day that the PSP Go launches. The site is also offering pre-orders on PSP Go and PSN card bundles.

PSN cards, which customers can purchase and then redeem to download games, are currently available outside of Europe, notably in Japan and North America, and PSN director of operations Eric Lempel said recently that US stores are doing "a pretty good PlayStation card business."

While no plans have officially been announced to sell PSN cards in Europe, the upcoming launch of the download-only PSP Go has seen retailers call on Sony to introduce new initiatives to help stores drive sales.

"You need to see some sort of revenue streams coming off the back of these machines, otherwise from a retail point of view it's just not worth it, and so Sony will need to come up with some sort of mechanism so that if we're going to sell the machine it's beneficial to ourselves and to our customers," Chips MD Don McCabe told us last month.

We contacted Sony Computer Entertainment Europe for comment, and were told that the image pictured is actually an altered US PSN card. The company has yet to return our request for comment on the possibility of PSN cards being introduced in Europe.

Sony are going to have to introduce these along with the PSP Go! If not then I can see a lot of retailers snubbing the Go! in favour of the UMD PSP-3000 in order to help push more sales of physical copies of the game which gives them a cash flow.

That being said I can't see retailers making much money from PSN cards, although I'm not sure how similar things work such as mobile top ups. Anyone know?

In related news I'm hopefully getting a PSP-3000 in October along with a 16GB memory card. The price? £185. Now how much was a PSP Go?

So if the psn cards do come out over here will we be able to use them to download stuff off the US store?.

no. is the simple answer. The cards only work in the region they were made for. If you want to download stuff off the US store you need to buy a US Prepay card or link a credit/debit card to your US acount.

I can't see many stores bothering with the pspGo! much unless they start selling games via prepaid cards.

According to an article i read on kotaku stores don't make any money off PSN cards as they have a monetary value so they can only sell them for the price on the card. which coincidently is how much they buy them in for.

Hurrah! Europe is (maybe) getting something after Japan and USA has it. Wait that always happens. SCEE need to pull their finger out more and give EU PS3 owners the same experience as the other regions. Otherwise it's just not Crciket is it?

No you can't. If you want to buy from the US store go to Ebay and look for a North American card. You even benefit from the exchange rate.
