PS3 opens up "new player base" for MMOs

DC Universe Online dev looks forward to pulling in fresh meat
DC Universe Online producer, Wes Yanagi, is excited about bringing console gamers to the world of persistent online games.

During a recent interview with CVG, Yanagi explained, "The PS3 opens up an entirely new player base for us, and it's one that we're incredibly excited about. They may not be familiar with the persistent online side of our game, but they will get the action part immediately."

And the developer reckons it can pull it off. "Bridging the gap between these two game genres is something we're very confident we can pull off. And to your broader point, the current console generation is the first one to fully embrace online functionality across the board, including all of the pieces required for an MMO, such as a mass storage device and broadband Internet access. MMOs take a long time to build, so I'm sure there are others coming to the consoles as well."

Look out for the full interview with Yanagi this week.

is it just me or does the game look like it was run on a PS2....?

and it begins

If I can ever be bothered to get my PS3 online, it'll probably be for the opportunity to fight alongside Batman.

hope they release some kind of free trail over PSN. Still not sure whether to go for this or champions online.

Fighting with DC characters could be fun. but Champions is made by the guys behind City of Heroes/ Villans. Probably my fav MMORPG

Same here. I'm looking for a new mmo to play and DC Online looks like it could be a contender. I just hope they don't ruin it by trying to gouge their players with additional micro transactions in the game, like a lot of other mmo makers are experimenting with right now.

will you have to pay a monthly subscription to play this?

It could be great, but you have to invest so much time into an MMO.

In any case, I would like to try a demo, to see if it is worth the time and effort.

never played and mmo in my life and i finally opened up to the dcu and it is fantastic.hopefully you can join the green lanterns or in fact any other lantern corps

How many of the MMO's coming to PS3 (DC Universe, The Agency, Final Fantasy XIV, Free Realms) will charge a subscription? I've never played an MMO and if they want a sub to play i won't be playing one anytime soon.

I would think this could work on the PS3 due to there not being any existing subscriptions to play online.

Extra charges on top of xbl? No thank you, not that I'll be playing an MMO anyway.

I'm waiting for Final Fantasy XIV. And what ever happened to that mystery game that NCSoft were supposed to be making for Sony?

MMO's suck balls. they only way it should be sub based is if the game itself is free.

and why not 360? they love paying for their LIVE. so its just a matter if they want to pay to play this game or not. they are accustomed to this shit anyway.

You could play FFXI on a 360 without a Gold account. The sub for the game was all you needed to pay.

MMOs 'suck balls' to Grasshopper because he has no friends to play them with and an inability to not insult the Xbox 360 every time he opens his mouth, which annoys people and makes him unable to solve his 'no friends' problem as others find this irritating. :D

I dont understand this game???

I thought MMO was a massive online world like warcraft?? I mean are we gonna see a thousnad supermans flying sround etc etc ???

I am a huge gamer but i just dont understand this MMO thingy?????
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
pretty much just that. they'll be lots of different people making many different superheroes to inhabit the differnt servers, much like WOW. Hopefully not too many people will lampoon existing characters.

@ SVD you can download trials for pretty much every MMO on the market for free, some now in fact don't even charge a monthly sub but work via making you purchase various items in game. Much like how Home works. but obviously the items bought are actually useful in game rather than just some adornment.

I think the PS3 will be a very good Platform for MMOs on consoles as there are no inital online fees to worry about, then again all FFXI needed on the 360 was a internet connection as it didn't use Lives servers to play and i'm sure any others will do similar.

err.. no they suck balls BECAUSE i have friends...

MMO's are about all about thousands of strangers meeting up, acting through their social life as a virtual representation of themselves, in a gimpy hobbit enviroment. mad GIMP, get a life!!!

@ Grasshopper
I have played three MMOs and I can tell you, none are any good unless you have some people you know on with you. I played Guild Wars first with about four other mates, and we all had a blast on that. Then came WoW, where only three of us signed up, it was still good but not as much as GW was. Then I tried WAR on my own - never have I been so bored in my life. I gave until level 35, but then I gave up. About six of us are going to buying Aion and have been on the beta for it - it really is an excellent game and there are many lulz again since we are in a group (we have had our fair share of Leroy Jenkins moments). We are all waiting for FFXIV to come out as well since we are all FF fans. None of us have ever given up our social lives due to MMOs - they are games just like any other, they just make it easier for you to hook up with people. Aren't all online games now similar in concept, you go on a game, meet some 'strangers' and play with them, and if you like them add them to your friends list? That is EXACTLY what you do on an MMORPG.

You know what, I just had a theory. Grasshopper, are you that guy that is sueing Sony for being banned from PSN? You were probably hurling some Xbox 360-based abuse at people.

To be fair it didn't look too bad on the graphics side. The only thing which looked lame was the flying haha.
