Dual analogue for next PSP likely

Sony wanted a second nub on PSP Go, decided against it, reveals Shuhei Yoshida
Sony including a second analogue stick on the next PSP looks all but certain after the president of Sony Worldwide Studios revealed Sony wishes it had another nub on the current PSP, and considered it for the PSP Go.

"We also felt - like many users - that we wish we had a second analogue on the PSP," said Yoshida talking about features considered for the PSP Go, which launches on October 1.

"But we are talking about the mid-life cycle of this platform, and the PSP Go is designed to be perfectly compatible with the PSP-3000 and all the games that released before that," added Yoshida.

"So we had a very serious discussion about this particular subject, but we decided not to add a second analogue, and some of the developers are doing quite a nice job translating the second analogue functionality to different buttons. We didn't want to divert their efforts either," he explained to Game Informer (via PlayStation Lifestyle).

We agree that adding a second control configuration at this stage - and charging over £200 for the upgrade - would have been crappy for the millions who already have PSP with no intention of buying a go. So it's a dead cert for the next PSP, right Yoshida?

Does the analogue stick on the PSP work well? Never had the chance to have a go, but it just looks like it wouldn't - kinda like the "nipples" you get on laptops.

Also would be surprised if Sony didn't drop the convex stick style for concave. That's one thing I don't like about the PS controller - you thumbs can slip.

I think the PSP go has potential to die on its arse. I bought the original fat and heavy one and still have it today.

If it wasn’t for Rockstar, they probably would have sold so many back then. They neglected the support for the PSP for so long and Im pretty sure that they were hoping that people would buy it whilst waiting for a PS3 or even delayed the PS3 so people would buy it.

Its too expensive and most people have a UMD free machine already that works with MSPRO duo. Its quicker and uses less battery, and cheaper than spending another £230. The only thing it lacks is the smaller size and nice screen, but that in itself isn’t enough to legislate spending another £230.

They annoyed me with bringing out the slim version with TV sync and Skype as an early adaptor to the format. I feel they let me down. I just hope that if they bring out a PS3 slim, that it doesn’t have other features that the current model doesn’t have, or it will really go against Sony!

Please Sony.

Would be brilliant if it was optional. Could not manage some games cos of it.
Posted by wildhook2
It won't die. More and more developers are supporting PSP Go. Haven't you heard?

How many would upgrade though? I know I wont.
Posted by robbiej55
I wont be bothering with the PSP go, although it does look really nice and I stopped using UMD a while back, but I've got plenty of memory sticks.

A PSP2 with 2 analogue sticks and based on the download only, super slim ideas of the go would interest me though.

wise to keep it for the next psp.

two sticks would make newer games useless for current owners.

plus its an added selling point for the next one.
Posted by flash501
True, It's an added selling point for the next one, but it could be yet another negative for the upcoming psp go. The high price is putting a lot of people off and with this story all but officially announcing that there will be a psp2 with 2 analogue sticks released sometime in the future, It can't be good for the go.

I understand their reasons for leaving the second stick off the go but I can't see many people buying it.

I've got the original PSP and the controls in general are awful. they leave your hand hurting after just a short while and the 'nubbin' is next to useless. if they could have developed some kind of pop-out analogue stick that would have been better. but analogue sticks are hardly Sony's forte anyway.

such gadgetry is always priced at a premium. its also stuff that isnt essential. i.e. luxury.

dont think its intended as a replacement for the 3000.

and i dont think anyone buying one will grudge paying the price. otherwise they'd just get a 3000.

and the next psp wont (i think) be compatable with the current ones. so you need to weigh up waiting a couple of years against the instant current library and other advantages of a 3000.

I have the PSP 1000 and have had it for years, as much as I've enjoyed it I have always felt that the controls placement and setup have been its biggest downfall for gaming. I think I've used and enjoyed it more for watching movies on.

My biggest wish for the PSP is if Sony would allow you to connect up a PS3 pad through either remote play or simply a usb cable (even both). I know this would be an extra item to carry for the PSP but anyone knows playing a PSP game for extended periods with its current setup is a pain.

The games that have been made for the PSP have always felt lacking in a second analogue stick (and additional buttons) and why they felt the need to place it half hanging off the bottom left hand side of the PSP is beyond me! The d-pad should be in the position of the analogue and vice versa.

If the PSPgo! isn't meant to be a replacement for current models of the PSP then whats the bloody point in Sony releasing it.

They wan't people to upgrade to the go so they can make maximum profits off the machine. Not only will they make cash right off the bat from the device itself no doubt. But every game purchased for it on PSN will give sony far more cash than the UMD of existing models as there can be no renting or second hand sale of games.

Problem is. its not as good as the current models and more expensive. the only people that would pick up such an obvious attempt at making a quick buck. Is a fool in my opinion.

I won't be upgrading to a go because i'd rather keep a machine with more features and a bigger screen. rather than spalsh out £230 on a scaled down cash cow.

PSPgo****yourself! would of been a better name for it.

its designed to be smaller, more compact.

for people who use it for its actual purpose instead of it never leaving the house, where the smaller size is an advantage, thats where the sales will come from. hence the name go.

i dont think sony released this thinking existing psp owners would be interested in it.

Another thing that annoys me about this is that it means that the PS3 slim will probably not get a price cut. How could they sell the PS3 slim for £200, and the go for £250?

I will be very surprised if the go is successful, but as many people have pointed out, why pay an extra £110 for a small screen, no UMD drive and no potential for buying 2nd hand games?

They could sell the go for £100 rrp, and still make a profit. They are relying on the Sony fans to buy it so they will be bailed out of their current financial predicament.

Kiss my balls, Sony. I will make every effort in the future to buy all of your products 2nd hand so you won't make any money from me. Mwa ha ha ha!

Oh my God! Sony I think it is the time you gave up and closed the business.

come on, another re-work of psp?? do sony think people r stupid??

Whats with all the Sony hate? The Go! seems like a nice idea since there are people that would prefer downloadable media and a multipurpose PMD (a damn good one considering it can be upgraded to 32gb). Maybe we should think of it more like a Walkman that can play games (Sony actually called the PSP the 'next-gen Walkman' at one point). And if you already have a PMD, then what's forcing you to buy a Go!? It surprises me that noone here watched the Sony E3 press conference, where Hirai said that the Go! would be marketed alongside the 3000 and that it was just an alternative. He also said that the 3000 would still recieve UMD based media, so what are you all worrying about?

(BTW I just bought a PSP 3000 and have no interest in the Go!)

been playing on gta4 today on my ps3 for about 6hrs and been having a menk about the exact same thing, why would they make convex trigger buttons????!!! they must know something we dont or something gun makers dont, its a no brainer, makes gameplay real uncomfortable on gta4, especially with the lock on feature on L2 and pressing R2 for fire, not saying it cant be played like that but am saying it would be so much better with concaved buttons... just bite the bullet sony and accept ms got it right with their pads eh (wont go into the placing of the left stick & analogue pad placing on this one)... no-one will say told you so (well i wont anyways, just the fanatical ms fanboys i spose). the ps pad needs an overhaul, was great in the ps1 and early ps2 games but they have to sort concaved buttons for L2 and R2 at the very least.... to say otherwise is just saying black is white... why would all guns have concaved triggers for the comfort and grip of the index finger otherwise all these years???

so they did have a seccond nub in ideas.
ok its official sonys stupider than i thought.
hmmm i dident think that was possiable.
and dont give me that we wanted it to be compatiable with older games BS.
theres heaps of people who have moded there PSPs for 2nd nobs and they can get them working perfectly.
if they can do it why cant sony.......
o yeah thats why ok.
games are 1.5GB he said.
so what if theres 5 games that month that i want to play?
that means 5GBs of my download usage is gone to games, half gone.
im struggling to keep within my limit as it is, and im not downloading any demos or qore which i really want.
is sony working for a ISP or something?
to be able to do everything online with my PSP and PS3 im going to need a bloody 50GB download limit.
and they expect people to buy this and we will add a seccond nub to the new psp when its out in a years time or 2.
seriously how stupid do you think we are.
you may be made out of money but im not.
if im spending 400 AUD for a psp i better be keeping it for at least 3 years.
its like bringing out a new system every 2 years and saying **** you to your previous customers, if you want to continue playing our games you have to buy our new system.
i read a article today and its true.
sony is the new M$

you have a download limit. I'm guessing you live in austrailia, so i don't know if there is a cap on all ISPs for downloads but. Change your ISP is limits are an issue.

Its the first thing i always look at when setting up the internet. If it has a limit then i go elsewhere.

I wouldn't say Sony are the new MS, for all the sins of the windows division. MS's gaming div has always been pretty good to its customers. I applauld them for publicly admitting they ****ed up with the RROD issue and offering extended warrenties as a result. Sony on the other hand did thier utmost to hush up all the faults in both the PSone and 2.

The PS3 however seems a lot more stable. My only beef i've had with it hardware wise is that i managed to round the screws in the HDD caddy when i attempted to upgrade it.

If this has happened to anyone else i suggest calling up Sony, they'll send you a new caddy for free, does take a couple weeks though.

yea im in oz.
every ISP has a download limit if you want unlimited they charge you a arm and a leg, not shure how much exactly because i dident set up my net, but my boss is on 50GB and is paying 140 per month.
and to make things worse they also count uploads.
i once downloaded a 200MB file on first day of the month, than turned my comp off turned it back on 2 hours later with limewire running in the background i dident realise but in 3 hours it uploaded close to 3 GB.
so instead of using up 200MB of my limit it used up close to 4GB.
were on a 2 year contract roughly 8 months through so its going to be a while till i can upgrade.
yea i had the same problem when i replaced my HDD the morons at sony when they repaired my ps3 tightned the screw so much i stripped the head.
they should know you never tighten a screw that much.
