Gears of War 2

Impressions: Hands-on with the first act
One minute in and it's already clear that Epic's production values have been ramped up significantly for Gears of War 2.

The campaign starts with a CGI prologue movie detailing the decades-long Pendulum Wars, and how humanity sacrificed the planet in a desperate attempt to respond to the Locust horde crusading from the ground.

It's moody stuff - but not just dark Gears of War angst; there's "heart" in the story this time around, Epic promises.

The first act is the Tip of the Spear, the frontline in Humanity's struggle to defend the last standing city, Jacinto. We're reintroduced to Marcus Fenix, who's looking more grumpy and tired than ever. "It never ends..."

Presentation is top notch and the detail on the environment and frontline characters is better than the first game. The little details on Marcus and Dom, including a bowie knife clinging to Dom's armour, and the intricate slots and nozzles on the chainsaw-ing Lancer, are impressive.

We're introduced to Carmine, a rookie who's tripping over his own boots (literally) to get a chance to fight in the war. He looks identical to the late Gear of the first game, but no link is set-up - at least in the first level anyway.

After choosing whether to give the new kid a little training or not, Carmine is put on 'guard duty' in the courtyard while Marcus and Dom dash to defend the local hospital from a Locust assault.

This is untouched human territory; it's obvious that the locust arriving on humanity's front doorstep is bad news, and there's siege atmosphere about the whole area of the Jacinto hospital.

We're also introduced to Tai, a burly, tattooed spiritual warrior who has a history fighting alongside Marcus Fenix. The two make a manly embrace, have a brief exchange about 'fate' and the Locust begin spilling into the building.

Beginners would've been through a tutorial by now, but Gears 2 still kicks off the action with a learning curve. From a high viewing point we spot a group of Locust cutting through a door, conveniently next to a big pile of explosive barrels. Clichéd, yes, but it teaches girls how to shoot in the right direction before the right fight begins and not during.

There's plenty of cover in the hospital corridors; stretchers, overturned beds, wooden desks - all of it destructible and breaking apart and locust fire, just as boasted in Epic's Unreal Engine 3.5 hoo-ha.

The cover system has been visibly refined; Marcus stays lower to the ground, protecting his head from the edge of cover. Moving between scenery fills smoothers as well, and your character pops up his weapon to blind fire without compromising anything other than a limb and hand.

Some pleasing refinement, but nothing near as satisfying as a new sound effect and a bigger nozzle can make the Gears 2 Lancer. The new gun sounds dangerous and far more beefy than Gears 1's angry sheep noise. It also looks angular and mean. We like it very, very much.

Progressing through the hospital, through surgery rooms and dirty corridors, there's already more cinematic action crammed into these walls than in any single level in the first Gears.

Locust burst through doors, Helicopters smash through the ceiling and we're already encountering new enemies; an airborne Reaver swoops down to the ground and tries to Hungry Hungry Hippo our teammates with its snapping jaw.

We reach one of many set pieces as the power goes down in a small hall, and we're left to defend ourselves as Locust flood in from four different entrances around our central hub.

The new Meat shield manoeuvre - executed by pressing X over a downed enemy - is surprisingly affective, here providing excellent cover from one or two Locust as we move between cover, while giving use to the previously useless pistol at the same time.

The chapter concludes as our four man team spills out onto the streets to confront a massive army of Locust hording through the city. It's a similar scene to the end of Gears 1's first act, only this time we've called in twin choppers to tear our way through the locust army.

Marcus hops between wrecked cars and roadblocks as the gunfire sprays down from above, creating a red water display down the road, with little chunks of flesh flinging onto the tarmac. "Running away won't help! I'll just shoot you in your ass!"

It's certainly a more epic, more polished introduction than the first game offered - and that's exactly what Gears 2 needed to do to hold our attention two years after the original.

Will it keep us entertained through another four acts? Look out for more hands-on impressions in the weeks running up to that November release.

Sounding pretty sweet so far.

Gears was the first game I played on my 360 and I didn't "get it" right away, but I love it now and I'm really looking forward to this one.
Lots of set pieces and mad combat can only be a good thing.

I just hope the multiplayer has been polished as much from the original. I can't even stay connected to games.

cant wait to play this, really loved the first game, gears (1) is one of my all time favourite games...

It could be amazing for all i care i still wont get it, unless it comes out on PC. No game is worth downgrading to a 360 for.

Used to be a PC gamer and got fed up of having to constantly upgrade the thing to play different things. If I spend £1000 building a PC, I expect it have a longer run than 2 years.

The 360 is easier, just as pretty looking in some games and it's nicer playing the 360 on a sofa rather than a desk chair.

You can play the PC's on Sofa's these days! Hook it up 2 use PC and stick a wireless controller on and off you go :)

Downgrading to a 360 ???? are you bitter it's not coming to the pc?

It's a shame that none of my friends are into Gears of War, otherwise I would be a lot more excited about it. They admit that it looks brilliant, but will no doubt jump onto COD5 online as soon as it is out. I'll probably wait till it comes down in price next year, so I can at least enjoy the single player game without feeling like I am missing out on a serious chunk of the game.

If you dont have it pick up Gears1 and have a blast around the MP on that one, 2 of the peeps that i know that are looking forward to the new Gears are from New York and I dont generally pop round to theirs everynight (though I would love to!).

Most of the people I game with online are dotted all over the world (thanks interweb), you have to get psyched for Gears Markyboy, cutting someone in half whilst stomping on their head. You cannae beat it.

But have they given them personality/charisma injections this time? :D

Looks like more of the same to me, kinda like gears of war 1.5 good when the game drops for like 10 bones, for now Resistance 2 is the superior Shooter this fall.

Can't wait i've been playing the campaigne again this week, there's so many little bits i had forgotten. I want it all to be fresh in my mind for the new game coming out.

There is always one transparent Sony comment from someone with about as much knowledge of games as a non gamer

Resistance was reasonable fun like what Insomniac always have in their gameplay, but it was not a fantastic FPS.Of course if you like godzilla type rubber monsters and wacky over the top guns in your games then R2 is simply awesome

For some reason I'm not excited at all.

cant waaaaait for this game absoultly billiant!!!, if this isnt your cuppa tea f**k off & look at something else.... bring on gears 2. i loved MGS4, but its nice to get a game with a story that they actually let you play!!..

I've got a mate who 'upgraded' to a PS3 who is buying his own old 360 back from the mate he sold it to JUST to play this game. I worked through the original Gears on the PC, found it a much more pleasurable experience using a mouse and keyboard, but nothing will stop me buying this game when it comes out, even if I do suspect that the PC version will, eventually, arrive, no matter what Cliffy B says!

Forgive me, what's a troll?
