Guitar Hero/Rock Band down 50%

Music game revenue disappoints in US
Guitar Hero and Rock Band revenues have dropped by almost 50% in the US year-on-year, thanks to discounted bundles and more than 20 different versions flooding the shops.

That's according to sales data compiled by Gamasutra, which reports that June 2009 was the second consecutive month without a Rock Band or Guitar Hero game in the top 20 software charts - the first time that's happened in almost two years.

There are currently seven different Rock Band games in the shops including various themed track packs and Rock Band Unplugged for the PSP.

As for Guitar Hero, that's currently holding shelf space for more elaborate expansions including Aerosmith and Metallica editions (with Van Halen expected later this year) as well as three Nintendo DS versions and the main instalments.

Somehow, we don't think The Beatles: Rock Band should be worried, though.

Sales are down because of the ridiculous price they charge for these games. That and I think people avoid them because there are new releases all the time.

ha!

take that greedy *******s.

i'd laugh too if MW2 didnt outsell the original after upping the RRP for no other reason than they could. and it isnt exactly impossible as the original sold a bucketload.

- and after their shouting that it will be the biggest selling shooter of all time. would be especially funny.

The other reason that guitar hero might be down on sales is because it puts rubbish tracks on the down list!

Yeah the Beatles should be worried, all their songs are well mellow. System of a Down Guitar Hero would be awesome... secondly as much as them losing revenue on games, they're not games that they work very hard on, they're lucky to have made the money they have - sneaky lazy barstools.

You know when a new good song comes on the radio the first 5-10 plays are great. When it becomes popular and the radio station milk it like the last cow on earth and it becomes irritating, this is now what guitar hero and rock band are. Great when they first came out, tired money grabbers now. Although ive never owned 1, the beatles rock band is one im keeping a eye on :)

Niche games that got too popular for their own good. Stop milking it like the preverbial cow and in a few years they might get some sales back. oh and this is just my own opinion but its a lot cheaper and more rewarding to learn a real instrument. said a million times i know but oh how true :D

I agree that an SOAD guitar hero would be awesome ,however with only 5 albums to their name they might struggle to fill the setlist ,wonder what guest artists would be on it?(beyond scars on broadway ,and tankians solo project and maybe achozen)

Market saturation, go figure.

Maybe because people are picking up real instruments and realizing they're more fun to play?...

Yeah, the retail side of things are down, but DLC wise i know Harmonix has raked in 40 million + on songs.

It is a problem for the consumer, and i put the blame firmly on Activision and Guitar Hero. You look on the shelf you have Rock Band, Rock Band 2 and Rock Band AC/DC.

Look near it and you have GH2, GH3, GH:WT, GH: Metallica, GH:Smash hits and within the next couple of months GH: Van Halen, GH 5 and Band Hero. I mean, talk about too much of a good thing. Even before a game comes out Activision are announcing the next one.

I bought Smash hits and it's crap. If you have the other games there is no real point for buying it, apart from songs like Cowboys from Hell and Thunderkiss '65. All the songs are on the other games. They could have easily, EASILY released the songs as DLC, but no, they release it as a full title for full whack price.

Which is why in the future Rock Band will be getting all of my money. I'm not going to buy another Guitar Hero product in my life unless they drastically improve the game and take it back to it's roots.
