Halo anime revealed

Seven shorts to be released on Blu-ray, Xbox Live
Microsoft's unveiled a series of seven anime shorts set in the Halo universe. Awesome.

Five production houses (Bones, Casio Entertainment, Production I.G., Studio4 C, and Toei Animation) as well as Microsoft's own newly-formed company, 343 Industries, will each produce a short, the first of which tells the history of Master Chief's Spartans. It all sounds a bit like The Animatrix.

Studio4 C's project, is a two-parter that explains the entire 100,000 year history of the Halo universe. Another, from Toei, is the only one outside of the official canon and "pokes fun at some of the game's characters".

"I liked that this would be an anthology of human stories told from different characters' perspectives," director Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed), who's overseeing the shorts, told the LA Times.

Within the general anime style, the visual look of the projects differs widely, says Halo man Frank O'Conner - although Microsoft's been on hand to give story assistance.

"It's a wildly varied genre, but anime creators do things with weapons and vehicle and technology nobody else does and that marries very well with Halo," he said. "It's amazing to see some of the new stuff they're introducing and how neatly it maps to the visual aesthetics in the Halo universe.

"Depending on the studio we did everything from writing the stories to feeding them with characters and scenarios they could explore," he added.

The shorts are due to start rolling out on Xbox Live this autumn and on DVD and Blu-ray early next year. Look for a trailer to short from Comic-Con any time now.

Anyone else think this will only be available on the US live?
Nifty idea, got the Animatrix and Dead Space anime, so I'll probably pick this up when it's on DVD (maybe the Blu-Ray if it's cheap/good enough).

It is coming out on DVD it's says so in the last paragraph of the article.

Oh wait you actually read the articles do you SVD. Just the headlines.

GO BACK TO YOUR BRIDGE!

ahem..

This sounds cool, really looking forward to seeing what Production I.G come up with. Considering the work they did on Ghost In the Shell, it would be cool if they did a short focusing on the AI characters.

Oh my word...
(Drooling)

Can someone get me a towel?

excuse me if i done read an article about a stupid cartoon of a series i think is garbage, which i intention of buying. just going by the headline.

you'd think they'd have outlined DVD instead of BR, seeing as thats the only tech 360 fans have.

Ahhh good old SVD....

So why waste your time in the first place in making a comment about something you have 'no intention of buying' and you think is 'garbage'?

Surely you find that a bit odd don't you?

Don't worry, I'm sure there'll be some Rainbow 6-branded Pop-Tarts made soon that should make you happy.

I'll just pop it into my Media Centre that can also play/rip/write Blu-Ray, see nothing about the 360 required to watch Blu-Rays.

This could be quite good tbh. As long as it's done right but I'm a sucker for anime lol.

Sounds good, hope it develops the story a bit more as well rather than just being a set of action sequences like Dead Space: Downfall...but then I enjoyed that anyway! :)

All the studios involved have good history. Im defo gonna watch these, being the massive anime fan that I am.

i thought downfall did quite a good job of extending the plot a little, the motion comics did an even better job though. well worth checking out if they're still up for download.

IS there anyone else that played dead space that shudders a little everytime they hear 'twinkle twinkle little star' now.

toshiba have now made a BR drive. the last company to do so... and they were microsofts HD-DVD partners.

the 360 is said to have a BR drive in the pipeline because of this.
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
its said to of had one in the pipeline for years. And everytime the rumours reared its ugly head. MS have said they weren't going to bother.

However if MS did produce a seperate Blu ray drive for the 360 for £50. It would really by putting the boot in.

Would quell pretty much all the sonyboy rants about bluray. and prices.

they could bundle it with the elite for £250.

I think a 360 BR drive is still very unlikely, maily because Sony is one of the founding companies of Blu-ray and probably the largest investor in it.

BTW the anime looks cool, and Appleseed was excellent by the same guy so this will probably follow suit.

Windows 7 will support the format, so I guess MS don't have much of an issue. Maybe the market will force their hand, but Blu-Ray still has a long way to go before it becomes standard.
Posted by lordirongut
Well Vista already does support Blu-ray, I was talking more about for use on games systems. Sony probably licence it for firmware support on Windows, but not hardware. I also agree that Blu-ray has a long way before being standard, the prices need to hugely drop before people invest since you can now buy a DVD player for £20.
