Seriously, PS3 updates are taking the piss nowadays. Went to play Motorstorm 2 the other week, it asked me to update it and gave me an estimated 84 minutes to update. Thought sod that, turned it off and played the 360 instead. I updated to 2.8 weeks ago..... Is this a retro news story? Didn't Manic Miner come out the same week as this update? He he.
:wink: ..while i won't moan too much at free updates, it is getting a bit silly now.....i daren't turn on my ps3 anymore in fear of a 45min update before i can play anything......i thought it was a games console.....silly me :? That seems a bit of a stupid move, unless this is just an uncalled for dig at the PS3. I can understand turning off Motorstorm 2 because it has a big update and putting another PS3 game on because the update will take too long, But if your going to put the 360 on why not let the Motorstorm update finish while your on your 360, at least it would be ready to play the next time you wanted to. Makes you wonder how old and slow the servers for PSN are. It takes the piss, first i have to download a demo. this takes 20 mins and i can't play something else while this is happening, then i have to install the damn thing.
Anyone who says that PSN is better XBL needs thier head examined.
Also updates and installs on the ps3 are a pain in the arse. except for the opeining one for MGS4 it may be 8 mins long, but i was in flavour country from start to finish. It's because I ended up going on Live for a bit, didn't want to cause any lag... »

I've never had any major problems with Live. You should have played Motor Storm 2 on your Xbox 360, wait, its only avilable on PS3
PSN is better than Live on a majority of services i.e. free music video streaming service, online browser with Divx and Flash etc support to watch iplayer youtube etc on your big shiny tele streamed from the PS3s built in wifi, play 60 + multiplayer games such as Resistance 2 and MAG, Home (slate as you may but ive met many online gamers there) and its FREE!!, help cure dieases by assisting ur PS3s cell with the breaking of proteines, and most important is the PSN service itself ... its absolutely FREE!!!!
Live can certainly keep group chats and video rentals (only? no buy?) for their superior subscription charges lol PS you shouldnt go by the estimated times of any installation or download service. They jump from 80 minutes to 10 minutes in a blink of an eye and continue to go up and down
if you'v a fast enough bb speed then it probably wudve installed in about 5 mins showing 80 as an estimate, when doownloading via PC the very same wonky estimates are apprent, just ignore them. Have you ever considered sending in your CV to Sony's PR/marketing department? Unless you live up a mountain like i do with sub 1mb speeds.

Q&A obviously doesn't exist anymore ...for me , LIVE is the better service. I am not interested in DIVX etc , i want to play games online and live is better.
I own both and no have no loyalty to either but when i buy a multiplayer game (cod4, cod5, vegas2, etc) i always buy the 360 version. Haha class! He would make a very good sales rep unless he already is... Very true, but then the xbox has plenty of other racing games to play that don't take even 5 minutes to install in the first place or 5 minutes to play because of an update.
But saying that the PS3 has the 'best racing game ever' in GT5, wait, that still isn't out yet...
Im not going to get into a console war debate, I have all three consoles so I really doesn't bother me that much, but anyone that tries to say the PS3 is better value for money than the Xbox needs to open their eyes.
You can go on all you want about free wifi, free blu ray player, free PSN. However the simple fact is you can play the same games on an xbox for £100 or a PS3 for £300.
That is the pure and simple truth of the matter... I downloaded this update 3 weeks ago. The only reason I knew about it was CVG told us about it then and as for the MS-PR update it took about 12 minutes as did the DLC. the whole "which is better" topic bores me rigid xbox is a bit better online (not really enough to justify a payment but you got to pay to play online) ps3 exclusives are easily better than xbox ones and there is more that I like, difference between the multiplatform (apart from valves lazy hl2 CONversion) are barely noticable and if better on either system its not the machines fault. Thats just my thought and to be fair I'm not arsed what anyone else says if you want different response then you have to come try beat it out of me. And yes I own both. I really shouldn't be getting in a debate about this, but the whole 'PS3 exclusives are better', isn't exactly true in my opinion either...

Ps3 has 13 games ranked 90 and above, 3 of them are exclusive.
360 has 22 games ranked 90 and above, 10 of them are exclusive.

99% Installing Who really cares what that metacritic says? I just care what keeps me occupied for a few hours every other evening when I'm not at work or my missus isn't around. I just know I had more fun on ps3 games than on xbox. Maybe its because I dont like the xbox pad. Either way I only care what I like not everyone else. There is a really simple solution to this. Download it from the web and then do the update, whilst playing something offline. Its safer that way too, in case anything goes wrong. If your mates have xbox, your gonna get a xbox, if your mates have PS3, your gonna get PS3. If your mates have xbox and PS3, you're gonna go for the cheapest option, PS3! Your right, your entilted to your opinion...
But like you said, it is just your opinion.
Metacritic takes the opinions of many people and puts it into one place, and right now those peoples opinions are saying the 360 is the console to own if you want the best games.
But like you said if your prefer to play games on the PS3 then its upto you... Surely you are mistaken my friend?
The Xbox 360 at under £100 is cheaper than a £300 PS3? by the time you've paid for extras, it's dearer! You continue to eat at a soup kitchen because the building it is in was once a sizzler. The food is probably off, you have to sit with the type people who are also there for the "free" meal and although you may be full, you are never going to be completely satisfied.
While walking out, you gaze into a resturant window across the street to see people eating steak. You think to yourself, it looks pretty good but my meal was obiously better because it was free.
You could probably afford the steak because you drove to the kitchen in a car you paid way to much for, and will keep going hoping that the soup kitchen will again become the sizzler it once was.

As ive said before if you can take 5-10 min out of your super busy schedules and configure your psn connection properly you will never experience lag or disconnects (at least i never do anymore). only thing i can give live is a better friends list,. If thats worth paying for you then thats kl but when people b1tch abt psn when they dont even know how to use it properly that kind of gets to me.

I just want a console that plays the same games as a PS3 but is £200 cheaper, so I will take the Xbox 360 please.
Yes the ps3 has blu-ray, built in hardrive, free PSN, built in wifi... blah blah blah... there all nice things, but when the majority of people buy a games console they do it to play games, and if they have a choice of £100 or £300 to play the same games what do you think they will choose. you have to take into account the fact that one will have to buy the console a minimum of 3 times due to its awesome design. :lol:
so far mine hasnt broke but my friend's just has and he has an elite which kinda scares me as i do as well and thought it was a step up. :lol: I like the metaphor. I know what you're all saying, the updates are becoming far to frequent and pointless, so sony, why not just roll them into larger, less frequent, and more useful updates?
On the issue of time it takes to update, my system does it in under 10 minutes, 90% of the time, so I am not to bothered, but I can understand the annoyance felt by the rest of you.
I have a PS3 because for me it was the best option. I use it as a media hub, as well as a console. I am a huge film buff, so the oppurtunity to have a blu-ray dvd player for a fraction of the price was just to good to be true. I also love the internet browser, and the free online. Obviously the 360 has given alot better gaming support so far, which is irritating, as I would have loved to owned the gta expansion packs, but maybe something for the future, eh sony? If you think that 5 minutes (which personally I think is on the quick side for PSN downloads) is 'ok', for an update that seemingly didn't actually add anything to the game then thats fine. I will stick with my much quicker 360 downloads.
We got to metacritic scores as we were talking about the merits of both systems, and I stated that the 360 has better games, and used metacritic as some evidence.
Im struggling to see why its flawed?
I can see 10 games for the 360 that are scored 90 and above which you cannot get for the PS3, yes some of them such as mass effect can also be played on the PC, but that isn't the point I was trying to make. They are exclusive in the sense that they are console exclusive.

It has a warranty on it just like the PS3 does if that breaks? I completley agree with you. It sounds like you bought your PS3 for pretty much the same reason I did.
I had my 360 before PS3 was launched, and got my PS3 when MGS4 came out, I told myself I wouldn't get it until there was a game I would really play on it.
The other reasons why I bought it were similar to yours, free blu-ray player, can be used as a media hub with the big HD, etc etc.
I am unhappy with the quality of games released for it though, I will agree there are some great games on the horizon, but they aren't here yet.
I think that anyone who tries to argue that as purely a games console the PS3 is better than the 360 needs to look at the facts. I was forced to download this weeks ago... intresting. Yeah, same here, I tried it for the first time last week and had to download a 600mb update before I could play it. I tried GT prologue for the first time in over a year recently as well and the update was closer to 1gb!!!. well if its on PC then it isnt exclusive. i get a choice between the versions and always opt with the PC 1 coz its better. i dunno if its only me but the term "console excluive" is pointless.
now im saying its flawed coz if you truly believe that halo and gears are 94% games then you are very very easy to please with those being slightly above avreage. now gears 2 1% less than the 1st one, riiiiiiiiiight. gta 98 (all systems) suuuuuuuuuure. graw 1 higher than 2, okaaaaaaay, bioshock (1 of my fav games ever) 96 which is also ridiculously high.
for PS3 lbp 95? sure it was a kl idea but comon are you kidding me? probably the greatest injustice is uncharted not even breaking the 90% mark. in my opinion 88 is a fitting score by itself but in the bigger picture with all these other games being stupidly high it should have been up there. i also feel like i'm the only person who hates street fighter 4 but that's prob coz i'm over fighting games.
what i'm trying to say with all this crap is that you cant go by that average for any argument; so many of those scores are achingly close to being perfect yet in reality they aren't even close, hence a poor representation of a game and thus flawed.
and yes 5 min for a firmware update is all ok with me. if you are so sad and/or pressed for time tht 5 min changes your entire daily schedule then maybe its not the consoles problem.
abt warranty: just coz you have 1 doesnt make it ok for it to break. ie just coz i have insurance doesnt mean its ok to drive off a bridge does it? I updated to 2.80 last week as VidZone said it will only play unless you update your PS3. Since then VidZone won't load fully, it just sticks to the loading screen with the loading bar going left to right with no progress at all. I wish Sony would stop pratting arount with these pointless uncalled for firmware updates and spent their time putting more ps1 games on the crappy European playstation store.
My ps3 spent most of last year in it's box gathering dust as there was bod all to play on it.
you have to remember that with the 360 there's the 3 year guarantee for red ring and e74 errors. It’s probably not only you, but for me console exclusive might as well mean exclusive as I do not play games on a PC. The only computer I use at home is a laptop for storing music on and transferring it to playing devices; I don’t think it could power any game I would like to play.
I’d imagine I am in the same boat as a lot of people, less likely than the people who frequent gaming sites, but you’re average punter will not have a gaming PC either. So for myself and those others, console exclusive does have meaning. Whether you like those games or not is subjective, and another matter entirely that cannot be won via argument or any other means.
Oh also, if you willingly drove off a bridge I think your insurers might think twice about paying out. Just a little. We, as a human race, are in big trouble if the words 'Firmware 2.80 released' can spark this much of a pointless squabble.

'Exclusive' - Sorry I am confused now? Console exclusive means that you can only play it one console.
Like you can't play Halo 3 on a PS3, and you can't play Killzone 2 on a 360... Why is console exclusive pointless if you only have a console? Like the vast majority of people that own a PS3 or 360?
Metacritic - Metacritic accumalates review scores across nearly all the major game magazines, websites etc, including CVG. It takes these scores and makes an average of them. Im not going to get into an argument about individual scores, because like you have said before my opinions are my opinions, just like yours are yours, and just because you or I think a game should have got a different score doesn't really make a difference
The fact is I can't think of any other better way of judging what the majority of people think about a game other than using a site like metacritic? Can you think of a better way?
Update - You win, if you would rather wait 5 minutes for an update that is about 10 times quicker on the 360, then fine. Its not about me being sad or pressed for time I just don't get why something takes 10 times longer do on console that costs three times as much as its competitor.
Warranty - I never said anything about it being ok for it to break. The previous poster said that an xbox costs more than a PS3 because you have to pay for another one when it breaks. I merely corrected in him in saying that if the xbox broke, just like if the PS3 broke it would be covered under its warranty and therefore you wouldn't have to pay for another one.

Now because you dont choose to play on a PC isnt anyone's fault. if one doesnt want to buy a PS3 then you could further narrow that down and say cross platform games are 360 exclusive as well. Any game on a PC can be exclusive to it too if one doesnt want to own a console. this is why im saying the term console exclusive is just bs.

The average gaming consumer does not look at the PC as a gaming platform (sorry PC dudes, but its true) so the term ‘console exclusive’ does in fact mean ‘exclusive’ in regard to the PS3, 360 & Wii, and not ‘bs’ as you put it.

ok a console is a machine (practically a pc?) where its primary purpose is for games right? now theres so many people out there that build PC's just for games, me being one. now why cant tht count as a console? technically the language may be flawed or i may be going excessively deep here but just say this is the case. now can there be a console exclusive when its on 2 separate platforms? killzone and halo are exclusives period. they are supported on only 1 machine so there you go.

anytime i've had to update, the time is took was nowhere near ridiculous.
the network is totally seperate. what it connects to doesnt represent the price you paid for the console itself.

What dribble are people posting here.... well it seems that for some people it takes half a day to dl. now i cannot and will not blame the PS3 for this but will blame their connection settings, setup and basically their isp. maybe they should do things properly before complaining. now it takes 5 min for me, why that is a problem for some i dont know. if i remember correctly the new 360 dashboard didnt add tht much either and took a similar amount of time. only diff is 360 has updates twice a year or smthg. The truth of the matter with the whole PSN vs Live thing is basically that you get what you pay for. or is it.
Updates are free to everyone on the 360 as are demos and the like. you only need a subscription to play online.
therefore both services are comparible for updates and download speeds. and I have to say Live beats the shit out of PSN for both. Also the whole having to install things after downloading them on the PS3 is just rediculous. when considering the 360 does it automatically, as soon as its finished downloading on the 360 you can play it. ta daaaa.
Also updating takes less than a couple seconds on the 360. on the PS3 it takes minutes.
this isn't opinion kids its fact. Live is just faster. I've got a PS3 and a 360 and 5 Mbit BB 24hr and if download the same game of arcade and psn I can guarantee the PS3 will take at least 10 mins longer to download and they are both using ethernet.My point is you shouldn't have to config the PS3 I didn't with my 360 it worked straight out of the box .

a couple of minutes shaved off updating is hardly worth paying a subscription for every year. especially when they hardly ever update it! Most people want the convenience of plug and play games, building a PC was not an option for me nor will it ever be. I’m sure that will always be the best method of getting the best looking games, but I am looking for convenience and PC gaming doesn’t provide that for me personally. Though I would like to state for the record I have nothing against it, it’s just not for me! A real gamer would only ever consider fps or rts on the pc.

Plus this is right out of the box with virgin media...dunno what problems people are having...non exsistant for me. All demos are not available to Silver accounts in fact a Silver account is basically worthless and you can set a PS3 to install when a download is complete. Can I just ask, if your ps3 take 80 minutes to update why the **** have you not got rid of your shit broadband? Any decent broadband will and does download the updates within 3mins. Even downloading 800mb demos takes only 15 20 mins.

anyway, one little point about exclusives and in particular 360 games not being exclusive because the game appears on pc. so bascially 2 MS systems yeah? In which case Resistance, LBP, Metal Gear, Motorstorm appear on ps3 and psp, therefore are they no longer considered exclusives? No different to pc/360.
it's hardly surprising Live is a better service. one, people pay to use it and secondly we're into software services here, MS's ballpark, definitely not Sony's. So when Activision release MW2 on the PC they have to get Microsofts ok to do it and Microsoft take a share of the profits?
