Develop: Home boss explains why Europe's behind

'Localisation, localisation, localisation'
Peter Edward, director of the PlayStation Home platform group, has tried to explain why Europe's PlayStation Home is so far behind neighbouring continents in terms of content and game spaces.

Speaking to Edge-Online at the Develop conference in Brighton, Edward put the delays down to localisation - and that's about it.

"I think localisation is a big part of [the delays in Europe getting content]," he said. "The expectation that spaces will be localised into at least the EFIGS (English, French, Italian, German and Spanish) languages leads to delays."

Edward's comments come after a statement by SCEE's Home community manager, who said: "Let's be honest, SCEE Home is behind the other regions in the number of Spaces we have to offer".

"There are other issues that you're no doubt aware of if you've read the post, [ones] more specifically related to the European business itself which I can't really comment on, but I think technically the big issue's localisation, and I think that's something that's always been an issue with the European market," Edward said.

"Since year dot, there's always been the issue of Europe getting things later than everybody else, and normally speaking that comes down to localisation. Home is no different in that respect which is why it's so important to get that stuff incorporated from the very beginning."

Home now has seven million users, three million of which are based in Europe, he added.

Zzzzzzzzz....

Talking about Home, strangely enough, is not as boring as actually playing it. I saw it at my cousin's house over the weekend and it really is quite bland and souless.

me and my mates use game launching all the time from HOME!

It is behind over regions but i think that expected but still very annoying.

About 90% of Europeans speak English by now.

Localisation my arse!

What's the difference between launching it from the menu, and launching it from home? I didn't see, we just used his avatar to walk around for a bit, got bored and then played streetfighter..

Here's an idea then.

Release the English version in Europe that's the same as the US one (although with the standard U's put back and the Z's replaced with S's) and THEN work on localising it.

That way, native English speakers in Europe don't get punished for being born here, and most of Europe will still be able to use it since they tend to speak English anyway. They can switch to their own language as and when it becomes available.

You Sir should work for Sony.

Dajmin is very right!!!!!!!

We shoukld get the versions of everything at the same time as the yanks. We speak in english as do most of europe. Its just a excuse of sonys to say its down to localisation.

ANYWAY HOME IS SHIT

My comment got deleted....
wow.
It may have not been the greatest comment in the world, but it was a slight lot better than most.

home is really boring. when i first heard the concept i thought it would be like sims only better. but to my horror its a total pile of poo! i'm not sure what stage its at but i hope its the stage where sony say "only kidding we were just foolin' with ya" and then give us the real home. If home was a "real life home" then it would be a tramps home, although come to think of it the tramp would be so depressed he would take his last swig of whisky and top himself. as for sony's excuse just who do they take us for? i think i believe in santa more than this poor attempt at a lie.

I could join the masses and preach about how disappointing Home has been for me, instead I'll leave it to this Penny Arcade strip, which sums up exactly what Home is, in three short panels.

not shure if they fixed this yet.
but for their E3 press release i went to watch it in home.
i sat there for 10 minutes waiting for the stupid video to buffer than it finaly started playing, but after every 10 words spatted it had to buffer again for another minute or so.
i think sony really need to spend some time in troubleshooting, because everything of theirs ive used its ****ed and does not work properly for at least the first 3 months.
and when the bloody hell are sony going to release a video player here in oz.
M$ has one and soon there will be no downloading just click and play.

It's quite clear these guys have never heard of forward planning.

Indeed as I am at a loss as to why the English, French, German, Italian and Spanish translators can't work at the same time..........

...and to think that Europe is supposedly the strongest continent for the PS3! :?
