FIFA 11: "We'd be idiots not to do more online"

Online space is "definitely important" for franchise's future, says producer
EA Sports would be "idiots not to more online stuff" in future FIFA games, producer David Rutter told CVG.

"I think online is very important [to the franchise]," he said in our recent interview. "We have a ridiculous number of people playing FIFA online every day.

"We've had almost 300 million games of FIFA played online since launch and it's not let up. It's just constant. That's really nice and yeah, we'd be idiots not to do more online stuff."

Rutter also discussed the massive spike outs that real-life footy matches cause to FIFA's online service, sparking the development team to stick a television in their offices to constantly monitor matches.

"When the community guys were over in Vancouver it was during the Champions League final and we went from 40,000 people playing FIFA online to zero in the space of five minutes when the game kicked off," he said.

"Then at half-time it went back up again to 20,000, then back down to zero for the second half and then back up again to 45,000 at the end of that match. So we have a TV in the office now so we can spot server outages, see who's playing and where."

You mean Fifa 10, or are they skipping it this year?

I love fifa clubs but i think it needs an overhaul r.e connetion issues and stat tracking - be nice to see who on the teams scores the most and have you record and maybe enter leagues or tournys

Anybody near this item hasn’t heard of a game called Rugby. No women, no cheating and if you get kicked in the leg, you get up and carry on playing...like a MAN would do. Women's sports. Put this title on Wii so all the women can play together at the same time.

they always make typos with numbers.. i recall them announcing Bioshock 3!!

first of all roger, if that is even your real name football is a great game and just cos you get some players play acting and diving doesn't mean they all do it. I hope they sort the online out so that if you're winning and your opponent quits you still get the win because i am sick of it.

Though I'm sure that would cause some boosting of some sort whether it be achievements or helping one of your friends/someone keep a higher win ratio.

You are very wrong. As a sport, football is fantastic. I cannot abide certain player's tactics and I certainly can't stand the politics - that's why I don't follow it. But I can happily sit there and appreciate the game at face value.

And I am a rugby fan - probably something to do with the fact I come from a town that's historically great at rugby, but bad at football.

Rugby? A game where large groups of men have group hugs for 80% of the time they're on the field? :)

I'm not a sports fan. In fact the only one I'm really that interested in watching is basketball, because the games are so quick. But I do like playing football video games.

The 10v10 in FIFA 09 really interests me, but since football isn't one of my passions and I have too many other things to spend money on, I never got the chance to try it. Shame.

Expansion of the online stuff? Fantasy World Cups? Create your own team and take part in scheduled matches 10v10 against people all over the world. In fact, you could break it down further and just have constant real leagues going on, with the buying and selling of real people's fake players. Could make some fierce competition. The game could track your technique so that if you didn't make it in time for kick-off, an AI sub took your place and tried to recreate your style.

lol. Well, FIFA 10 must have slipped RIGHT by me, if FIFA 11 is coming out a year ahead of schedule.

Seriously though, I hope this improves on last years version. I'd like the ball to feel more weighty, and have more long range goals. They were rarities in FIFA 08 and 09.
