Prototype to top Infamous by "90%"

But Infamous will sell more on PS3, claims analyst
Prototype will outsell PS3-exclusive rival Infamous by 90 percent because of its multiplatform set-up, claims EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich.

Both games have been the subject of inevitable comparisons thanks to their open-world superhero set-ups, moody protagonists and similar launch windows. The pair's developers even painted their rival game's lead in drag.

It's not all bad news for Infamous though, as EEDAR claims that on the PS3 Sucker Punch's game is on track to sell 35 percent more than Prototype in the US. Thanks to the longer sales curve for platform exclusives that number could stretch to as much as 50 percent, it says.

"Due to near identical game play and quality scores, the Infamous vs. Prototype case study presents interesting data to publishers when considering the sales bump a title could receive by choosing exclusivity over a multiplatform release," said Divnich.

Because there's no info on how much it cost Activision to put Prototype on three platforms, it's difficult to tell which strategy will ultimately pay off, the analyst added. What do you think?

So if I am reading this correctly, Infamous will outsell prototype on the ps3 but overall, prototype will out sell infamous by 90%
Why the **** would you bother bringing out a game on ps3 then?

Actual sales figures say no.

... and today in the world of non-news

I'm not sure you're understanding the numbers. Assuming Infamous sold 100 copies on PS3, and this prediction is spot on, then Prototype would sell 190 copies over the PS3, 360 and PC.

This is news? You would have expected at least a 100% difference because of the substantial difference in install bases.

....
and its the better game, but this is all hardly relevant

You can't spell analyst without anal.
Posted by pishers
wasnt infamous a game published by sony and it had quite a bit of marketing and included as a bundle for the ps3? i am sure that would aid sales of it.

it would be interesting to know the cost of producing the 2 games to see the benefits of going multi platform or sticking to 1, it could give an insight into why valve dont support the ps3 directly yet.

i wanna meet someone who actually pays attention to what an analyst says, then BAM, curbstomp
Posted by Dajmin
Cost is hardly relevant. You either have a studio to develop for PS3 or you don't. Valve don't, so obviously creating one would cost money. But a studio that already has that team doesn't spend any extra releasing a multiplatform game since they're paying wages either way.

I just can't believe CVG are still posting analyst stories, they're so utterly pointless. State the obvious, why don't you. Multiplat games sell more than exclusives, big shock.

I bought Infamous.

I played Infamous.

I enjoyed Infamous.

And now that I know the proposed sales stats, my life is complete.

I may have lost the will to live. Or maybe care. Either way, I think its pretty obvious that a game that is multi plat is going to outsell a single plat game. However, this is prototype, which is a stinking pile of rancid old-gen crap.
Posted by starsail
Probably more interesting if it had of been a PS3 exclusive vs an Xbox 360 exclusive.

But I still prefer the exclusive arguement rather than the multi platform one. Exclusives add reasons to own a particular machine and creates competition. Without competition, there'd be more kak flooding the market. Competition is good for us gamers. Sure more money can be made from multi platform but this would create a stagnent market in the long run. Mario exclusivity still shines as the best in platforming, Sonic multi platform is stagnant.

I think CVG have posted an interesting item here actually, I was waiting for these 2 titles to go head to head and looking at research, it shows how well recieved an exclusive can perform on a platform given its similarity to another game released around the same time.

I also prefer Infamous with its more atuned platform elements, tighter controls, more restrained gameplay and of course in most parts better graphics.

Mr CVG <Face palms.GIF>

You are getting more and more embarrassing everyday!

Of course multiplatform games sell better.

Whilst I agree that is hardly 'news', I would like to comment on the fact that 'Prototype' is anything but. Anyone who had played 'Hulk-Ultimate Destruction' would know that it is almost identical. All they did was replace the jolly green giant with Wesker. Tosh.

Your forum name alone is enough reason to disregard any comment you make about ps3 or anything not xbox related so why the f**k would you bother hmm?

He just makes an annoying, loud noise. That's why he's called 360_Fan.

Oooh, owned!

It's disappointing though, because I was looking forward to Prototype way more than Infamous. The range of choices to tackle the missions was what grabbed me, but as the reviews say, it's a bit hit or miss. I played the Infamous demo and enjoyed it more than I expected to.

The problem that you have, even comparing platform-exclusives, is install base. So Halo 3 vs KillZone 2 would - in theory - be a fairer match, but since there's more 360s out there than PS3s it doesn't work.
Posted by jazzy_p
Thats interesting because the reverse happened to me.
I love the sly raccoon games on the ps2, but i hated the infamous demo..loathed actually would be closer.
It may have something to do with the fact that i had completed prototype before even looking at infamous. To me it was slow beyond reason, and i had no desire to throw lightning when i could just tear people apart.
I wonder if its a fps/devil may cry split (this is just me considering..im not stating that it is) in that i hate FPS's, but love devil may cry combo type games. I lived ninja gaiden black hard mode for 3 months and godhand for longer.

Just a supposition

i just sold this on after 10 days, sad as i was so looking forward to this one, but the gameplay is just too random and unfocused, plus the missions become very predictable very quickly. shame as theres a lot of good in it but a game i thought might have the makings of a 85-95% general score turned out to be far more of a 65-70 percenter. rent but dont buy it folks. as for infamous, i aint got a PS3 so cant really comment on that one.
Posted by Dajmin
Oh, now there's something I'd like to see a poll done on. I'm a big FPS fan but don't generally like button mashers like DMC. I won NGBlack for the 360 but couldn't get into it at all. But then I did like the Wolverine demo and Heavenly Sword.

We need a correlation between fans of each game according to what they'd class as their favourite genre. If FPS fans like inFamous and hack n slashers like Prototype, that'd be sort of cool. And further explain the sales figures.

I still reckon that the Prototype concept is much cooler. A shape shifter with massive alien tendrils who can absorb people's personalities by eating them is way better than just some guy who got zapped by a weird leccy bolt :)

Who cares about sales figures?!!!!!

I have both games, i've yet to really play prototype properly on my 360. I completed Infamous on my ps3 though and enjoyed it.

It's certainly not a game of the year contender though, it got a bit repetitive after the first island was completed(you do the same kind of stuff on all 3 islands), but i certainly liked it(83-84% i'd give it).
Another quality ps3 exclusive.

I'm looking forward to spending more time with prototype when i've completed the games that are currently taking up my time.
I have a feeling it won't be quite as good as infamous from the little i've spent on it.
I could be wrong.

And your forum name suggests your a 32 year old who gets off on men in tights hugging each other.

That is actually funny. Don't really have anything that clever to match it. Now I am going to have to change my name. Tosser.

you can break costs down per product, in fact thats what should be done or you cant make informed decisions. if a product makes a loss you arent likely to recommission it.

So a game on multi platform outsells a game on a single platform, well no shit.

Can I have that guys job.

If that headline read 'Prototype tops Infamous by 90% on PS3' then that would had been an issue for Sucker Punch.

So in reality say 200k infamous titles sold on PS3 and 380k (90% more) prototype titles were sold and spread across PS3/PC/360. That equals 126k average each platform right?

Doesn't that mean that on the PS3 prototype sold 73k less than Infamous? Could we now have a headline that reads 'Infamous outsells prototype by 37% on PS3' (sorry if my maths is shite!)'

Or put it another way... if Infamous was released on PC & 360 the totals could had been 600k (ie. 200k per platform). Can activision still boast?

Now since that's an activision game and say the CEO did pull out of dev games for Sony (last months news), prototype would only had sold 253k games. Pretty big losses in revenue for activision if you ask me.

I've played both Prototype & Infamous & have to say I think Infamous is better - its very fluid & more polished, you also have the good/bad storyline which you don't have in Prototype.

You're changing your name to tosser? It does suit you though.

Dodgy1;

So you think that having a good/bad storyline is a plus factor to a game?
Im not arguing, im just interested on people's thoughts on this.

There was a very good reason why it wasnt in prototype..it wouldnt have worked. Its irrelevant anyway..

SPOILER

your not human so common human morality does not apply.

My thought is that this good/bad karma system is overly played out and just an excuse for lazy development. 'Lets make them play it twice' I couldnt care less about being either good or evil in games. Its just a game.

There are of course games, like the star wars ones, where it makes sense canonically..but otherwise i think its a waste of time assigning good moral choices to a dialogue tree or your actions...its not realistic.
not to be too nerdy, but actions should be like ripples, not a tick in a box..you save a guy, he helps you later..not +1 karma.
But thats just me

Personally I ****ing loved Prototype! Hearing that it is identical to Hulk: Destruction means that is also a must buy.

Yeah the graphics were a bit pants, the story was all over the place (literally) and it was cliche but I think the last time I had this much fun (remember that?) was COD4, some genuinely incredible moments that will be completely different from the next person who plays it (did some seriously cool wall run into glides into sky jack into glide into swallow dive into....you get the point).

Gimme Mo'!
