If it were me, I certainly wouldn't try and justify a sequel on those figures alone. I thought most people bought it for the Halo 3 beta? Anyway I loved Crackdown and I'm excited about the sequel! I think most people originally bought it for the Halo 3 BETA, but after reflection, found they actually got a pretty good damn game at the same time. I think that's what they mean by "suprise" hit. It was the same for Zone of the Enders as well, which came with the MGS2 demo for PS2. Most people bought it for the demo, but the game turned out pretty good as well. I think sadly it takes these sort of things to help sell less mainstream appealing new IP's. MS have said they looked at figures from Live, which showed 2 million+ users have played Crackdown since its release and greenlit a sequel from that. Judging by it's crash in price, and it's huge surge in second hand sales after the beta ended, I should say you are spot on. They should never of judged this on sales (Edit: Live usage maybe - see above). However I thought it was great and well deserving of a sequel, although I did feel it lacked in soul somewhat... After seeing a few people mention it, I got it for about £7. I'm playing through it at the moment, I think it's excellent and definitely looking forward to the sequel more now I've played it. I was giddy just hearing about an MS exclusive when they announced it at e3.
It's a bit repetitive, but running around throwing skips, blowing up shit loads of stuff, jumping ridiculous distances... what's not to love!?!
This has replaced GTAIV as my 'play for 20 minutes or so blowing the crap out of stuff' game. That beta invite was an amazingly smart move. Crackdown was a launch title in a new franchise from an unknown developer. It's a great game, but it wouldn't have sold without that helping hand.
So maybe the sales figures were boosted by the Halo 3 beta, but it'd be easy enough to track the played hours instead. Sorry, I just noticed "I'll get a mop"....ace! the figures from LIVE are no more telling than the figures that bought the game. less in fact.
so what, people bought it for the beta then ****ed away the game?! of course not - they played it.
and also a lot of them LIVE figures could be from second hand sales.
anyway good game which could have been great. had lots of niggling issues that werent even fixed with the patch.
no doubt a sequel will be much better than the already solid original. The figures from Live are very useful compared to the sales figures. As already said, the sales could have been swayed by the beta. If that was the case, most copies of the game would only log a couple of play hours at the most and probably not racked up many Achievements.
If people were playing the game because they wanted to, they would have logged at least a handful of hours and gained several Achievements.
Each copy of the game will have a registered serial number which I'm sure is tracked too, so it'd be simple to identify resold copies. But even that can be useful to judge interest, since not everyone reads reviews and will go on word of mouth.
I'm looking forward to the sequel, I really enjoyed the original. A little more to do once the main story was finished would be nice, maybe leave it open for some DLC or something. »
I think you misunderstood, but Dajmin pointed it out nicely. I think i'm one of the few that bought it because I wanted it. When I saw the picture a guy holding the bus about to throw it I was hooked. I guess it did have its problems but damn it felt good to play. Had that kinda of magic that just seems to happen for some reason.
I am looking forward to this sequel but I can't help the feeling that by taking out what was wrong they might loose that little bit of magic. Sometimes the ok games are the ones that leave a smile on your face when you look back. i really want to get ABP its looking really good. i bought crackdown on tuesday and i seriously cant see what the big deal with this game is. the aiming system is a ****ING PAIN IN THE BALLS. i mean why the **** would i want to shoot a dead guy? how is that going to benefit me. kicking takes off more health than shooting? WTF? last time i checked a bullet to the head is going to cause a few more problems than a kick to the head. the missions are exactly the same, and you dont get a sence of progression. you just feel like ok ive been playing the game for 4 hours now but i have not made any ground. besides your powers which between each upgrade are to weak. all of my stats are now on 2 stars. from 1 star to 2 you can barely tell the difference but it takes ages to upgrade it 1 star. there should be a massive difference. not a small, ok now i can lift 1 extra gram difference. Yes, I bought it purely for the game itself... Halo has never held much attraction for me, only reinforced after I finally got my hands on it. I bought it for the halo 3 beta, and ended up playing crackdown all the time, and not bothering with halo 3, crackdown 2 should be great, i mean the best game experience i've had in a long time, was is reaching the top of agency tower (before i was super human) and running and jumping of the tower into the water below (well second time, i missed it 1st) brilliant game I bought it after playing the demo... won't have Halo 3 anywhere near my machine... the way they screwed over the ending to Halo 2 really put me off playing the sequel. |
