An angry PC Mob (sorry guys)! There'll be holy hell to pay on the AW forums in the form of verbal riots. I wonder how many potential AW customers who own both a PC and the Xbox 360 might decide to make a stand and outright refuse to buy the game? Maybe it'll have a noticeable impact, maybe not. I hope it'll be a ME scenario whereby the PC version is released within a year of the Xbox 360 release. I wasn't going to buy Vista to play AW on the PC but as I've just pre-ordered Windows 7 Home Premium for under 45 pounds it would have allowed me to play it on PC which is the platform I want to play it on for control reasons. I have an Xbox 360 and I might buy AW for it but right now I'm disinclined to do so. A big kick in the teeth indeed. Lots of people might say they won’t buy it, but much like the L4D boycott, it probably won’t be the case. People might hold out for a day or too, then if the games good will probably crack and buy it for the Xbox. That is if they have the option for both.
Most angry people on the internet don’t really hold that much conviction in their stance, it’s easy to rant and rave whilst typing for your ‘cause’ but, when push comes to shove, they’ll never practice what they preach. Because generally, in the grand scheme of things, stuff like this doesn’t really matter. Don't care what format it comes out on I don't want this game anymore its moment has passed. Can't help feeling its going to let down badly and its own hype will swallow it up. What hype? strange business decision, less money for them i guess. meh, i personally couldnt give a shit because i wouldnt buy it anyway Well, as I have heard virtually nothing about the game, I can't see why I would be bothered tbh. If it does turn out to be truly awesome, I'll probably be patient enough anyway until the PC version comes out. After all... I still have a shed load of games to tide me over in the meantime. (Assuming they do release it on the PC eventually) Yes and no. What you describe does happen and not infrequently, yet history is littered with incidents where people, for one reason or another, decided they'd had enough of the usual business (reasonable or otherwise,) and suddenly leap in to action. The fact is that no one, not you nor I nor MS, really know for certain how this will play out in terms of sales. Sometimes individulas dig in at what might otherwise be seen as a small event but because it may have triggered the proverbial "the straw that broke the camel's back" reaction it unleashes long pent up frustrations.
"Spore" is one such example whereby more than just the cheap skates and regular pirates appear to have downloaded the game - many seem to have done it out of spite and in protest. I doubt EA anticipated quite such a strong reaction from the customer base, and tellingly EA has since then taken steps to try and put a more humane face on it's current DRM scheme. MS could be walking in to a similar public relations minefield if AW is not announced for the PC. The 360 is a tramps PC. Strange that MS would release the game only on the inferior 360 console. :? I could have sworn these tramps were asking for change so they could buy food?! Now you've revealed their true agenda, I cannot thank you enough kind sir. The cheek of it! Just to feed their dirty 360 addiction. link please for cheapo windows 7.
i am using the release candidate at home and i really like it. The Spore thing might be exactly why Microsoft are thinking they might not release it on the PC at all, like Gears of War 2. In the long run none of that bothers me though, what bothers me is (admittedly my own conjured up image) the fat nerds visibly wobbling with seething rage that a game might not be released on the platform of their preferred choice, and declaring vendetta against parties who may, or may not, be responsible for said exclusion. Those people should have a cookie and get some perspective. Or just have a Tommy tank, I find that cures most pent up misdirected rage. Here you go! :) http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_sw_h_?url=search-alias%3Dsoftware&field-keywords=Windows+7 Thats shocking, utterly unbelievable news...Windows 7 for £45  Cheers KDF, been using the RC for a month while stupid Seagate drive was being fixed with a firmware that works. Only a few niggles with Anti-virus software and stuff but seems worth getting.
Oh Alan Wake, thats right, I knew there was a reason I clicked on this story. Ummmm no big shocker to me really, PC keeps getting pissed on. I want to see what the PC can really do, stop letting the consoles hold it back. Bring on the real PC games!...and Alan Wake please, looks good  My pleasure. It's practically a steal at that pre-order price! No Alan Wake on the PC?! OMG NOOOOOO! ... Wait, just remembered that I don't care anymore  BOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What's the bloody problem here!!! I remember when Alan Wake was first anounced, it was a PC title and one that was going to kick ass!! Graphically it looked fantastic andthe premise was superb. I've been eagerly awaiting its release for years now. Come on, give the PC gamers a break and give us the game! not when the devs roots are with the PC. thats what i think at least; never 4get where you came from. its pretty much selling out. I know theres money to be had with the 360 version but in this case (and with epic) its just a slap in the face. hope they all get herpes. :D Well - if we have to wait more, then so be it. But please don't cancel it altogether. I quite fancy playing it and will never buy an Xbox. M$ want to sell XBox 360's to gamers not OS's. Its no surprise really. I hope M$ irrevocably damage their OS sales with their antics. i cant believe how callus and cold M$ can be to their own platform. what was the point of inroducing games for windows? just to tease us. remedy are stupid there going to loose alot of their fan base because of this. loyalty has gone down the shitter this generation companys have forgotten they wouldent be who they are if it was not for other partners helping them letting their foot into the door. Too damn right it is a steal! Got my copy yesterday too.
Anyway this whole Alan Wake thing could well take off but I have a feeling it will not do brilliantly anyway as people will have lost interest in it. In effect it is exactly what happening with DNF. Let's just hope they actually finish it unlike some companies... At the end of the day, if the resources don't allow for a simultaneous release they will need to prioritise.
Now, do they go for the PC and it's low consumer base compared with consoles or do they go with the 360?
Here's another way to look at it - do they release it on the PC, which most people have anyway for Office, Internet etc. etc. or do they put it on the Xbox and give PC owners a reason to buy a 360 rather than a PS3?
It may come across as harsh, but at the end of the day they're in the business to make money. None of us could honestly say that if we were in their shoes we would rather say "no, let's not make a lot of money but at least we'll be in PC gamers' good books" rather than "let's make as much money as we can to stay at the forefront of the market and continue to have cash to pump into future game developement - plus we'll be a bit richer and keep more people in work". The main problem with that line of reasoning being that the PC user install base dwarfs the console install base. Now, if we start to get in to specifics of what hardware is required for a certain type of PC gaming experience then that's something that's open to debate (although where we would get accurate figures is unknown to me at present).
I can fully comprehend why a business such as MS would decide to focus on one platform over the other, however I wouldn't have bought Vista just to play AW (I bought Win7 because it was a fantastic deal and the OS seems much improved over Vista), I wouldn't have bought an Xbox 360 just to play AW and though I already own an Xbox 360 it wasn't bought so I could play AW. The more I think on it these past 24 hours, the more I'm inclined to snub both MS and Remedy the way I perceive they have snubbed the PC gamers. My money will not go to AW unless it's on a PC version and shall instead be saved and/or spent on other things. I'm not alone in that sentiment. Way to win over your customers MS and Remedy. *sarcastic clap* It does work though. I very nearly bought a 360 a few times mainly because of Crackdown (it was £15 and looks loads of fun) and Mass effect. The PC release stopped me dead in my tracks and ive just learned to live without Crackdown :( Now i know ME has limited installs and im on my last one and you and I have been over this and we both agree not to buy such games. Its the only one I own but I LOVE it. I put my money behind a PS3 mainly because Im a film buff and love BlueRay but also because I figured most big 360 games would come to PC and I have the PS3 for sony's exclusives. I hate writing this down incase these ****tards read it and go "You see, YOU SEE, TOLD YOU" Pains me to say it but this horrible way of doing things does sell more consoles. Just look how much PC gaming has changed in the last 2 years. How much money has already been spent on the PC version of AL? If they scrap it they are taking a hit, I believe they are okay with that  That of course is true, but how many of those owners would actually use their PCs for gaming and buy Alan Wake? If you compare THAT value to the number of 360 owners likely to buy it (plus the few people likely to buy a 360 for it) then I'm sure you'd find that they'd sell far more for the 360.
You only have to go to GAME, Gamestation, HMV or (God forbid) PC World to see how much space is devoted to PC gaming compared with console gaming and see where the money is in the gaming market. The problem with the statement in bold is that it is supposition. While it may be true it can just as well not be true. Without hard data to support it, it's a meaningless claim from an empirical perspective.
Various games stores may have decided to allocate more shelf space to console games, and yet I know of retail stores that still divide store space out more or less equally amongst the various consoles, the PC and the various handheld platforms. Furthermore, the digital distriubtion network for the PC and online stores are often overlooked sources of games when people attempt to do a tally. In short, as convinced as you are of the consoles selling better I'm equally convinced that many people underestimate the continued selling power of PC gaming. Whether this is out of ignorance, or a conscious desire to downplay the continued role PC gaming plays in todays market, is something those individuals will have to answer for themselves. I've come across claims from console fanboys that no simultaneously released game has ever sold as well or better on the PC than its console counterparts which is simply false (ex. Orange Box). Furthermore, if a comparison is to be made then it must be on a system vs. system basis as opposed to a PC vs. all of the console systems combined.
Oh, and don't forget about those of us whom could buy either a PC or an Xbox 360 version of AW but now refuse to buy the Xbox 360 version. Then add in to the larger profit equation potential loss of future product sales due to damaged public relations with the fan base. Sure, the title may still be a success, but the point is that it's not as cut and dried as some would like to make it out to be. They will lose money because I was going to buy this on PC since i first saw it 4 years ago. They will lose money because I will never touch an xbox. They will lose money because I will never buy another Remedy game. They will lose money because I will now try as hard as possible not to spend any money on a Microsoft product.
If they released simultaneously on both then of course they would make more of their profit from xbox but they'd still make good money from the PC version too. At least enough surely to cover the cost of optimising for PC harware and implementing mouse and keyboard support.
F**k you Remedy. F**k the xbox. I always knew it was going to ruin PC gaming. Halo, like Alan Wake, was originally being developed as a PC game. well lets hope AW turns out to be around the same level of quality as halo and we wont ahve anything to worry abt coz it would just be an expensive waste of time. |
