Share this article: Digg.comFacebookGoogle BookmarksN4GGamerblipsdel.icio.usRedditSlashdot.orgStumbleUpon This caused quite a stir last night when I mentioned it to my friends. It's obviously a nod to "Shaun of the Dead", but seriously, what are your chances of finding a cricket bat in New Orleans? not even taking into account a zombie apocalypse.
I for one couldn't care less if it's in or not, but I expect this to be subject of much debate in the coming months... Guess it depends. If one of the survivors is an English holidaymaker or maybe an actual cricketer, it's entirely possible they could have a bat with them :)
Of course, they could just exchange the graphic for that of a baseball bat. It could just be in there for a laugh. I like that idea... but he needs a string vest, knotted hankerchief on his head and a rolled up copy of "The Sun" sticking out of his back pocket... Think Eddie Hitler from Bottom when he's in his summer attire... Nice, much preferable to a baseball bat imo. Next up I want a blender... though 4 melee weapons could be it right? I smell DLC... Much better range of strokes with a cricket bat though... I for one look forward to an elegant zombie head cover drive.
Didn't think Valve could get much higher in my estimation but they just have. Why would it cause a stir? It's just a videogame. And it's not as if it's trying to depict real life. Unless you're about to tell me you just survived another zombie apocalypse the other day? I knew putting that would be a mistake, that someone would read too much into it's tone. "Subject to discussion" better for you?
Although saying something is "just a videogame" is advice many, many people should take away with them in this internet-centric age of dissecting every minute detail of a game.
To be clear: we didn't care that the cricket bat is in there, we just discussed it's presence. We're well past judging anything in a game until it's actually in our hands, as most well rounded individuals are. So what's next valve, a baseball bat? a crowbar? a shovel? a picthfork? or a lawnmower? they do play cricket in the us They've already confirmed a baseball bat, and chainsaw amoungst other melee weapons.
I'd like to see a lawnmower actually, like in Braindead (or "Dead alive" to our American chums). In fact it was referenced in "Blood Harvest", it's sitting in the basement of the house you go through at the end of the 4th section.
Here's the scene in question... Even has a bit of blender action for you, Soup detective...
http://www.flixster.com/movie/dead-alive-braindead-videos/dead-alive-lawnmower-scene-6938367 Cricket bat, I'm absolutley outraged. Are people seriously upset over the inclusion of a cricket bat in a LEFT 4 DEAD GAME?!?!
So you can happily suspend reality when it comes to fighting your way through thousands of obscure flavours of zombies, having unlimited ammo in your pistols and using pain-pills to give you a temporary health boost...but if someone DARE suggest that you can find a cricket bat in the USA - well that's just taking things too far.
 No... no one is "seriously" upset about the inclusion of a cricket bat in this game... not here anyway. Thanks for riding in on your high horse though... ;) No problem - anytime.
I just find it highly obscure that people would give this a second thought beyond, "oh - like from Shaun of the Dead...cool". Just very odd that it was brought up at all. Excellent. See Kids? See how easy it is to be nice to each other on a forum? You could learn something from this... I must admit I was being a bit facetious when I first posted, something that doesn't always work in text...
It's the sort of thing I am expecting though... After reading/hearing people moan about such obscure nonsense like the weapons in Modern Warfare not having the correct length of barrel etc, and Sheva holding her gun incorrectly...
Game breakers I'm sure you'll agree. The stir in question is that games yes go into the realms of the unreal, zombies etc.(though after reading the Zombie Survival Guide i'm ready just in case.. oh i'm ready!) but they exsist within the parrameters of the world which is created around it. I'm not against the cricket bat but it was just funny tring to come up with a reason why there would be one in new orleans. Not really an angry stir just a bit of fun. |
