PES 2009 had about as good online play as PES 5 on my old XBOX. Awful lobbys, poor play modes, disgraceful connection issues and lag. I'm sure people have had similar experiences. And that Legend mode rubbish, how did that crap get past the testing stage. We all know how good a true next gen PES could be, i hope this is the year konami really need to pull something big out of the PES training bag this year to entice everyone who deserted (myself included) back after the last few years lacklustre efforts. we need a proper next-gen PES, not the same old shite we've been fed since PES5. and i think they should be concentrating more on sorting out the gameplay than making Messi look good. unscripted play, through balls that actually go where you want, a stable online mode and some sort of intelligence in the defenders should be top of the order. either that or EA will be getting my money again this year. PES 10 will fail this year and again next year. Only then will Konami wake up and realise that mediocrity isn't acceptable Konami haven't made a truly decent game since the SNES era, save maybe for ISS'98 on the N64. I'm not a fan of MGS (way overrated) and PES has just got worse. Its like Konami don't understand 3D games or online play. They really are utter shite <insert SVD MGS is great rant here> I'm inclined to agree.
I've never been a fan of MGS (I enjoyed MGS on the PS1, but it was far from earth-shattering). PES just hasn't evolved since PES5 - I'd personally love it if they really pulled it out of the bag with this years version, but I really doubt they will. Good, solid online play is an absolute must, especially considering how seemless FIFA is.
I think the only way that Konami will get any money out of me this year, is if they release an XBLA version of ISS '98....it's still the greatest football game of all time.
:) I was just saying the same to someone. We've always thought PES 5 was the only one in the series we could tolerate (much was still wrong with it, like the AI). The rest after were just pants.
Agreed with ISS'98 too It's true though. PES5 was a pretty good footy game, it was quite a big change from PES4 too....there just hasn't been as much of a change since. Nowadays, online is expected for a sports sim and they've really let people down with that side of things. I can't actually see that changing anytime soon.
ISS '98 will always have a place in my heart. Some of my favourite gaming memories are of myself and my brother playing co-op with our own team of created players (we had a 99 rated player!)- we used to make it look like ballet....that game had so much depth, yet everything became second-nature once you'd gotten used to the controls.
I've even considered picking up an N64 and a copy of it recently.
:) Sensible soccer was always a totally different way of looking at the football sim game and all the iterations are glorious to me-hell I even played it to death on Amiga CD back in the day! Sadly, however, those days are long gone-cept on my mobile!
Konami have had a terrible time getting to guips with PES this gen but we shouldn't forget how awful Fifa was 'ril this year. PES2008, even with all the bugs and online guff was still a match for that seasons Fifa and only with the 2008 Euros edition did we see EA get going with the new engine and even now the gao between the two is negligable at best.
We all know the pronlem is them wanting to flog a full game to us every year when they SHOULD both release one every other year with a player update DLC at the start of the inbetween season(after the transfer window natch)for a reasonable price. As it stands they have no time to improve their engine, AI, gameplay or pretty much anything and we get the same old cack. EA only sorted themselves out in small increments from the start of this gen anyway so don't expect much more from them anytime soon.
Speaks volumes to me that the best PES for ages have been the Wii games where they were forced to think differently and as a result came up with something pretty good and really fresh only let down by shonky keepers and defensive AI like two year olds. So, please, change the yearly grind and use the time to innovate something much better.
BTW, MGS needs no defence and MGS4 is the best console game this generation. If Koj's series is overrated where does that leave 99% of the other derivative tosh we get shoved at us? I really don't know about that. Everything in MGS screams 'cliche' to me...I don't think you can fault the game mechanics, but I do find the story convoluted and a little lacking. The characters are basically those that can be found in lots of bad anime series. I think this is where I'd say that MGS is over-rated...it tends to be the story that most highlight for praise - this gen, a game like Mass Effect has it beat in that regard (in my opinion, obviously).
I've not played MGS4 and I understand that it is a great achievement in so many ways, but I really don't think I could actually be bothered...if you put even a 30 minute cutscene in a game, I'm out.
:) Sorry, that'd be Super Mario Galaxy. Kojima is overrated although I won't argue about other shite being overrated too. Mario isn't and deserves its praise. Every MGS has had all this praise yet are let down by its over ambition, clumsiness and all games are just plain 'meh'. I've not played number 4 so don't let my comments reflect that but I have no interest in it from what I've seen..
As for Parma, well, I still do have an N64 with ISS'98 :D I really need to get one, but it was the memory card that had the most value....the sheer amount of hours I put in to creating players was ridiculous. My brother still has that, but I bet the battery to the memory card went long ago.
Mind you, I'm tempted to pick up a 3DO for its version of Road Rash - it had Soundgarden on the soundtrack, what could be better?
