LucasArts "old school" reveal is?

Company goes download crazy - partners with Steam
LucasArts has partnered with the mighty Steam, which will see a lot of its back catalogue appear on the digi-download service.

Update: Looks like there's still some games to come: Hit this link for the update. Update out.

Original press release:

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Fans have asked and LucasArts has delivered! Today the company announced a new initiative in its effort to revive its classic and beloved franchises by making its games available for the first time ever as digital downloads online.

In this first round of releases, ten fan-favorite LucasArts PC games will be made available Wednesday, July 8 on Steam, Valve Corporation's delivery and management platform for the PC.

Scheduled for release are classic adventure titles like LOOM and The Dig and hit action games including Star Wars Battlefront II and Star Wars Republic Commando.

The complete list of games to be released on July 8 via Steam includes:

  • Armed and Dangerous
  • Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
  • Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure
  • LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure
  • LOOM
  • Star Wars Battlefront II
  • Star Wars Republic Commando
  • Star Wars Starfighter
  • The Dig
  • Thrillville: Off the Rails

"This effort is going to make it possible to introduce a whole new generation of gamers to
LucasArts' classic games," said Darrell Rodriguez, president of LucasArts. "It also gives more people a chance to play our games by making them available long after they've
disappeared from store shelves. We hope our fans are as excited as we are about our plans and we can't wait to share what's coming next. This is just the beginning."

LucasArts previously announced the return of the classic Monkey Island franchise with two new projects due to be released in the near future.

Tomorrow, July 7, Telltale will premiere the Tales of Monkey Island game series on PC, delivering a completely new epic storyline and swashbuckling flair that will unfold across five monthly episodes. The first Tales of Monkey Island chapter is expected to release for WiiWare in the coming weeks as well.

The Monkey Island celebration continues on July 15 when LucasArts publishes The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, a completely re-imagined version of the first game in the series that adds updated high definition graphics, a re-mastered musical score, and full voiceover to the classic adventure game originally launched in 1990.

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition will be made available on Xbox Live Arcade
for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and PC via Steam and other online distribution channels.

Some big names missing from that list though. Hopefully there's more to come.

Oh, is that it? Lucasarts are re-releasing a bunch of titles, for the third or fourth time each, that everybody who cares already owns?

Curses, I almost got excited for a second back there.

Goodbye, my dreams of a decent online Tie Fighter title.

fraid to break it to you but battlefront 3 is dead! there was an announcement a while ago saying that battlefront 3 and the technology that made the land to space battles possible have gone down with the company! Its gutting as it looked so complete and so technically and visually impressive but it is a dead dream now! :( they need to get battlefront 2 released on PSN and market place at least though tbh!

What? No KOTOR?

Grim Fandango?!?

KOTOR PC is in the 2 for £15 section at Game, you're probably not going to get a better deal than that on it. Or you can get the Xbox version for under £10 on ebay and play that on the 360 (If you have one, though check that the BC works for that)

You know, this may not be as exciting as Battlefront 3 to alot of people but there are a hell of alot of gamers who would love a chance to get their hands on a copy of some of the old Lucasarts classics. I mean not all of them are being released on Steam tomorrow but I very much doubt they'd refuse to release the titles like Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango etc that people have been wishing for. It's a chance to make MONEY afterall and after 3 piss poor Star Wars prequels I think we all know that anything with the name Lucas in is mainly there to make cash.

But yeah, not as pant wettingly exciting as something new to play its still something that most likely means alot to a shit load of people.
