Yeah, it's by no means glamorous, but it's certainly functional. I don't have any real gripes with any of the PS3, 360 or Wii interfaces, though I generally don't spend much time on the menu when I could be playing games. The Wii so needs an "NXE-like" overhaul update more than anything else. i don't have a PS3 yet, but its dashboard looks nice. When we get more than 3 players on-line we may consider an upgrade, as yet there is simple not the demand or interest to justify any further cash injections into futile worthless ps3 ventures!!!!
sony out. I reckon XMB is a bit crap. Especially once you have lots of entries. It's like navigating a coordinate system to get to what you want. It's not too bad on the PSP where you typically don't have that much, but my PS3 is decidedly crowded and having to navigate it (and it's constantly changing list of items) often makes me just turn it off instead.
The RSS ticker is also a far less elegant solution than Spotlight.
Oh well, at least XMB is leaps and bounds better than Home... From the little time I've spent on it I don't think it needs a major overhaul. The 360's old Blades system definitely did in my opinion. Yep, XMB is cool. A dashboard for grown-ups. I particularly like the way that all menu's are on the same screen and that it looks clean and clutter free.
However, I'd like to see the trophy cards automatically loaded for my friends on the list, rather than having to choose to see them. Just the overall score, like the achievement score on 360 LIVE would be adequate.
That's the only improvement that I can think of. Have to agree. The XMB could maybe use some of the bits rearranged, but it doesn't need to actually change.
It's a serious interface for serious gamers. Just wish it was a bit faster. Takes ages for the icons to appear when you load it up in-game. Pardon me, but which part of is "serious" and for "serious gamers" ?
The serious time it takes to find what you're looking for?
The seriously long columns in the settings row?
The seriously underwhelming sorting options?
The serious inability to play your music while doing anything else?
XMB may look simple, but it's a chore to get to what you want: Your games.
XMB seems like a semi-clever engineer design (tech oriented).
NXE seems like a semi-clever gamer design (solution oriented).
Also : What makes it grown-up? The dreariness of it all? The lack of imagination? I suppose it qualifies. The clock! Put battery symbol one inch lower! Please no NXE, Mr Sony.
NXE in Xbox 360 is sluggish and laggy.

The part where they don't feel it's necessary to inundate you with cute graphics or unnecessary images. It's just a menu system, nothing glammed up. Does what it needs to do. And since what we need it to do is load games or stream movies, that's what it does.
While I like the overall smooth look of the NXE, I don't like how childish it became with the comic graphic style of the avatars. And you can't even escape them now, they're in all of the windows as well as the dashboard. What a bunch of whiny losers, if the PS3 system had been anything like the XBOX dashboard you would all be moaning about that to. I'm glad they're sticking by the XMB, at it's clean and functional. There's no overhaul needed, but some usability tweaks would be nice! i dont understand people who say NXE is laggy, i never had any trouble with it at all. I have really fast broadband tho, if that makes a diff iono. Its fine when you get used to it. At least they made the effort the PS3 dash looks boring. Pretentious toss like the PS3 itself. Wii homescreen thing is like an internet home page its pretty good. Basic but does the job. The navigation for the internet pages though is a joke. Trying to download a game or looking in the wii channel/shop/something is infuriating.

All of my films and clips e.t.c are easy enough to put into seperate folders that you can create, so mine says

The only overly long cutscene was the last one, which is normal for japanese games, going on forever. If you dont like Kojima's method of telling a story blame him and not the console. Seriously, grow up.
The only things wrong with the xmb are the little things, like the battery for the controllers over the clock, needing to select display all when plugging a flash key in. trophies not taking forever to come up or not well integrated.

When you think about what you used to get, with the PS1, PS2, Then the XMB is brilliant. I read on N4G somebody was saying they needed to Overhaul the lot. Which of course is utter Bollocks! But It would be nice if you could use everything while you are in a game. Yet another reason why Sony is destined to fail with the PS3. The dashboard looks like the BIOS of a cheap PC!! its crying out for an update. I wonder if this guy knows that the amount of PSN users exceded the amount of xbox live users a while back. IDK why Sony would want to change it anyway-it's good that there's choice as I really dislike what MS did with Avatars and NXE(only my opinion-it's certainly a matter of taste)and, to be honest, it does wind me up sometimes and would be worse if that was everywhere!
Besides, both set ups work really well(unless you're too dim to be allowed to use things without adult supervision)and Sony and MS should be allowed, nay encouraged, to be different-there's already to much bloody "me too!" this generation without Sony copying NXE isn't there? As usual I disagree with $ony the XMB is boring hard to navigate and leaves me feeling totally isolated as a result of the lack of community features. I think $ony have some nice ideas but they need to get them out there and out of the beta stage and then redesign everything so that its not like a computer desktop and is more like a media and community interface and the features actually interact with one another.

There was nothing incorrect with what I typed sweetie. The PS3 XMB is one of the worst UI experiences I've ever had. Sure it's not too bad if you only have 3 or 4 games on your HDD but once you get more than that its a complete mess.
It's also very slow to display trophy information and it doesn't display them in the order your actually unlocked them. Everytime you earn a trophy if you want to see what it actually was for you have to scroll through the entire list remembering the name of the one you just unlocked to find it buried somewhere in the middle usually.
There's no chat in most games, the trophy syncing is ridiculously slow. The whole OS is dumb. Unless you put movies in a specific folder it doesn't recognise them when streaming from a media server. Same with a usb stick, if you copy a movie file to one and then ask it to look for movies it finds nothing. You have to go further into the menus and choose display all.
How the hell this thing won an emmy is beyond me. Style over useability must've been the category it won in.
Sure the XMB is slow right now (that's supposedly getting fixed later in the year) but at least I can find things I want, talk to friends outside of it and quickly check what the achievement I just unlocked was. Oh and it doesn't really matter how many games I have either because it intelligently puts the last 3 I played first in the list. It pi**es on the XMB even in it's current form. System works fine for me. Turn PS3 on. Auto log in. Scroll right to games folder, scroll down to the game you wish to play (listed alphabetically) - launch game. Job done. I mean how the hell can you make those steps any faster or easier??!!! dcman you are a cock. Get a life or better still try a PS3 first before you make s*** up. |
