I reckon that will be some achievement. He does make it out to be a little to easy to churn them out at the required quality to keep them going. I guess they do have quite a few software houses though. what the hells gotten into EA. they used to be *******s. Now they're talking about bringing out a steady stream of new IPS and actually taking the wii seriously????
I'm not complaining i just hope Activision catch the same thing soon. Good on EA, as long as they put the time and effort into these new IP's it's a good idea, unlike Activision who were determined to ditch any IP they couldn't milk. Isn't that a good thing though? Of course! Surely everyone wants new games coming out? Every game seems to be a sequal these days. New IP's are a good thing in my book. Not really, because Ghostbusters, Riddick and Brutal Legend are all quite good (or showing promise in the case of Brutal Legend), and Activision almost killed them off for the sake of their own profit. The fact that they're now suing EA over the release of Brutal Legend speaks volumes. EA have really turned around lately, sure they are still churning out sequels/expansions but they are trying a lot of new stuff as well. I have got really into BattleForge lately and frankly am surprised something like that came from EA. Wow definate signs of a turnaround by EA, I suppose redemption really can happen. They've let Bioware maintain their own creative control, they're taking risks on new games like Mirror's Edge (which I love, just wish it was longer and more open-world), and heck the new FIFA's have almost reached PES standards (although IMO PES has become more arcadey, whilst FIFA has become more simulation). Sequels and yearly sports franchises are fixed income, the new IPs are risky ventures. I think it works out well for everyone.
And if Dead Space and Mirror's Edge are anything to go by, this could be the Golden Age of EA. Never thought I'd say that. WHat pisses me off is the term IP, dunno why but I hate it. Can't we just go back to the olden days when it was 'new games'? Ahhh the 90's how I miss you so I've been singing EA's praises for a while now, the last 18 months or so they have been on top form. Doesn't stop the hater's still EA bashing because they still think it's cool though, so it's nice to see some appreciation for their efforts on here. They are probably the biggest software house in the world, and to see them taking that position seriously is really encouraging.
They gave me several of my favourites from last year, including Burnout Paradise, FIFA 09 (PES, it was great while it lasted, but you got complacent), Dead Space and BF: Bad Company. If they can continue to innovate with new IP's whilst continually improving their existing franchises (please give Tiger Woods a facelift!) then world domination quite literally awaits.
And they will have earned it. |
