Well that's going to severely affect the sales figures. Most of the Sony titles are bundled with consoles and if you don't count them then of course some will look poor.
Most of these titles are brilliant games with extremely high review scores, but because of the Anti-Sony stigma that seems to be going around gamers just aren't buying them. Shame. Pretty suprising figures really, I would have expected some of those titles to have surpassed 1 million sales easily?
If there not including bundles then obviously that will skew the numbers but even still, Resistance is the only Game over a million. Sony wont/cant be happy. That's a shame, Ratchet and Clank deserve much better, one of the few games I've played through multiple times this gen. Agreed. Even though the US is Xbox 360 country (and Wii too, which - let's face it - is pretty much anywhere in the world), it is the world's largest market and it surprises me that some of those titles didn't sell more. I would be interested in finding out what the total sales are once you include bundles. You work in HMV? I chose it for what I consider to be the higher quality and choice of games, and the higher quality of the online service.

It's shifted something like 4 million copies IIRC, but it's not a Sony published title and therefore outside the remit of the study/article.
TBH the one that surprises me in that list is Uncharted. It was a bit of a surprise hit when it came out so I'd expected it to have sold at least as many as LBP. Although I have to agree that not counting bundled sales does make the study rather less definitive than it might have been.
I suppose at the end of the day it doesn't matter so much exactly how many copies you sell as whether you make a profit or not i.e. dev costs are relevant too. Strikes me it's likely Uncharted and R&C:ToD are much more likely to have made a profit than Killzone 2.
Jon Sony should focus on the PS2. It's still selling well and surely has a larger install base.
In fact, I'm sure I read that it was outselling the PS3 a while back? Not sure though. It would be interesting to see how much the figures change if they did include bundle sales. But i doubt it would change it too much.
Does go to show how far behind Sony are to the competition though. I think practically all of nintendos exclusives have sold over million. Can't say the same for the 360, but there are a lot more. I recall reading an article on this website where an industry person mentioend CoD4 sales being around 8-9 million in total (PC, Xbox 360, PS3). You also raise a salient point in regards to development costs in relation to profit. Figures would change if they included bundle sales, but that is rather defeating the object.. As people bought a console with the game, and usually when that happens the game is heavily discounted. This article is really just saying that, with all the standalone ps3 game releases, only one managed to get past 1 million sales as of April 2009.
And that, to be honest. Is quite shocking. this game is severely overrated - i hate it.

i'm very surprised about games like Motorstorm and LBP though. i thought those wold have at least hit the million. very worrying times for Sony ahead if this doesn't pick up. Well its hardly surprising considering the massive lead they had in releasing the console and its much cheaper. However anyone who claims that the ps3 has a lower build quality than a 360 is dramatically in denial.
It also shows that the system with the most fps's, ie xbox has the lion share of the market in america because that is the most popular form of game.
Conversely in Japan the majority think that FPS's are a waste of space..thus the ds, wii and ps3 do a hell of a lot better over there than America.
As far as i am aware, here in Spain, Sony do much better than Microsoft..but it was a while ago that i last checked, so i could be wrong.
I still maintain that a system which has such a large fail rate (two of mine have rrod) should not be on the market. Whether or not it is the superior gaming machine is irrelevant. Surprised Killzone 2 hasn't sold more. Sony can't really have any complaints. If they're not going to advertise the games then they're not going to sell as many. VG Chartz says:

Look at the Wii exclusives and then the PS3 ones. At least they do buy games. Yeah, so third parties fare worse - they shouldn't release uninspiring , PS2 esque tripe in general.
Sony have baerly advertised their games though. What's worse is the cost that will go into these games. Maybe they can't afford to advertise due the cost of the PS3 crippling them?

At the same time, this is old news. I read this over the weekend on Gamasutra. They did make a point that at least Sony are trying to push new IPs and that the two best selling games are established sequels (MGS and GTA). Then again, so is Gears of War, which really shows what a sorry state games are in cos those games are garbage I wouldn't say GTA 4 is garbage. I thought it was a wonderful game. But you do make a great point about Sony really pushing new IPs. I think that is a great thing they are doing. But it would have been wiser if they had established a larger user base before investing so heavily in new IPs maybe? I think a price cut is more important at this point. There does seem to be a large anti-PS3 thing going on, possibly just because the people who would have bought a PS3 got a 360 because it was released first and are now just upset the games they want aren't available. Could also be because early in it's life developers struggled with the new chip architecture and online was a bit crappy.

The EU zone's economy is more or less the same size as the US so that too is a huge market to focus on, followed by Japan. Ignoring any of those three limits sales expansion. I do believe this normal regarding games published by the console companies, they don't sell that much as supposed to other because they can't be shifted to other platforms. Jeez.. Remember these are only US numbers not world wide numbers and don't include bundles which most sony games have been apart of.
Compare this to UK numbers which has a population 80% smaller than the US. An equivlant million seller in the US would be 200k in the Uk.

I would have compared the US with Europe but there are no figures you can use for it as no one releases actually eu figures. The UK is the best I could get.
For a game to sell over 1 million in the UK it would mean 1 in ever 60 people or 1 in every 15ish families owns the game which is very rare.
You simply can't compre a game selling 1 mil in US where there are over 300mil people and the a game selling 1 mil in the uk where there are just over 60 mil people. Yeah, it's not like sales figures have any effect on the way a publisher chooses to support any of these platforms. :roll: Indeed.

White Knight, D Souls, Heavy Rain, Last Guardian, Agent, MAG, God Of War 3, Heavey Rain, R&C, FF14 Verses, Mod Racers, Uncharted 2, Gran Tourismo 5 etc
Theres a greater scoop than Halo and Gears. Too Human missed by a mile and Mass Effect was didn't strike its mark either. PGR was good tho and Forza ha potenial (role on the next Forza).
I honestly reckon the US has been taken by the cheaper machine with its inclusive Live headset, its certinaly not by out shining the PS3 tho. wasn't it just. As for resistence 2 it got slated badly for some reason and I still can't work out why. Now I am in no way dissin the Xbox (I would actually buy one if my missus would let me, but with a Wii and a PS3 too I don't think she'd be best pleased) and think it is a brilliant console but why do you feel the need to diss the PS3?

Also before u call me a ps3 fanboy i'm not i own an xbox 360 aswell and my personal opinion is that i prefer the 360 but im sure people that own both consoles have got there own opinions and im not going to argue with that as it's called an OPINION look the word up you may learn something, it ust seems to me your trying to piss everyone off and u can't get off the fact that DIFFRENT PEOPLE, HAVE DIFFRENT OPINIONS, People can spend there money on whatever console or PC they like!
Now moving onto the topic at hand this is only in U.S.A not Europe or Japan or anywhere else around the world so i don't understand why everyone's getting so annoyed about it what will be will be. As I mentioend previously I think you raise a reasonable point, however the bottom line doesn't care, and again since the US is a much larger market it should be much easier for Sony titles to hit, or break, the 1 million figure. Not really. I'm pleased with the ease of use of my Xbox 360 and the large library of cheap second hand games that aren't hampered by DRM. I cherish my PC which stomps on all of the existing consoles but which is sadly plagued by idiotic, ineffective anti-piracy measures. Had the PS3 received a price cut sooner it might have ended up on my TV entertainment center instead of the Xbox 360. As it stands I have no regrets regarding this particular outcome. That's nice, now consider that the overall size of the global economy and the funds generally available to people in developed countries was larger during the first three years of the PS3 than during the Gamecube's years (i.e. it was easier for more people to buy the PS3 and with a growing gaming culture it was/is also more acceptable socially). As for the idea of dropping it, that's not bad advice. How about you practice what you preach? Just let it go and move on. This is from VGChartz and is the top 50 selling games in Japan. There is only one 360 game on the entire list. Also, there are only I think 3 or 4 PS3 games on the entire list, none of which have sold over a million. The Wii, DS, and PSP dominate the list and are the only titles I saw that topped 1 million.
