UK current-gen consoles hit 24.2 Million

Wii and DS lead the way
The current-gen UK console install base has hit 24.2 million units, according to data released by Chart-Track.

Wii comfortably leads the way in the UK with 5.4 million units sold as of June 27, 2009. Xbox 360 sales are currently at 3.9 million while PS3 sales sit at 2.2 million, says Chart-Track.

On the handheld front DS sales are approaching ten million units and in comparison PSP has shipped 3.3 million units so far.

Nintendo's still winning then. Full data follows:

DS - 9.4 million (including 300,000 DSi sales)
Wii - 5.4 million
Xbox 360 - 3.9 million
PSP - 3.3 million
PS3 - 2.2 million

Comfy chair and popcorn time...

I thought the ps3 was a lot closer in sales, even if the ps3 suddenly started selling double the amount of 360's it would take years just to catch up.

Sorry if it sounds like i'm baiting, but i really thought the sales were closer, sony must be doing a great job on the hype.

And before you all have a pop at me, i honestly hope the sales close up as the competition benefits us all.
Posted by eddiehitler
I thought the wii would be further in front of the xbox and that the ps3 would have sold more than 2.2mil.

This shound be fun, I've got nothing better to do at work today so I will watch this unfold.

Grabs comfy chair, popcorn and waits . . . . .

The ps3 and 360 are meant to closer than that in europe. Most of the 360's lead is in the UK.

Before people start saying "well x has been out longer" etc... here are the rouge average sales per month since their uk launch.

wii 175,300 per month (30 months)
ps3 80,400 per month (27 months)
360 78,000 per month (43 months)

ds 181,600 per month (52 months)
psp 71,700 per month (46 months)

you also have to remember number of christmas' has an impact as it is the peak time for console sales and naturally price points have an impact.

Total monies taken for each console "may" look very different.

This afternoon could be pretty interesting then :D  ?
Posted by The_KFD_Case
Sony over hype something? Surely not?! Ok, so they are not alone in engaging the hype machine but I was expecting the PS3 to have sold more than that. Part of me does feel a distinctly sadistic pleasure at the thought of certain PS3 SDF fanboys howling with tears of frustration at the stark, unforgiving truth set down for them, and everyone else, to read.
Posted by Tonyb
The 360 outselling the PS3 by almost 2-1 is a much bigger gap that I thought, and I wonder how many of those PS3's were actually sold and hence profit (or loss in this case!) and not given away as part of phone contracts and promotional deals?
Posted by jimmygoogle84
The total Uk consoles were also released in april 2009.(see mcvuk http://www.mcvuk.com/news/34025/UK-lifetime-console-sales-revealed) Thought people might like to compare.

april 09 july 09 change
360 3.2m 3.3m 0.1m
ps3 1.9m 2.2m 0.3m
wii 4.9m 5.4m 0.5m

ds 8.8m 9.4m 0.6m
psp 3.2m 3.3m 0.1m

if both sets of figures are right the ps3 is currently outselling the 360 3:1 and the wii is outselling the 360 5:1

the psp just can't touch the ds

Y'know what guys - I think Nintendo could be on to something here! or maybe it's just a fad, yeah sorry that's what it is, a gimick that will never catch on!

Not surprised at the low PS3 sales in the UK, the price is way too steep, especially during a credit crunch!
Posted by jimmygoogle84
And accoringing to the same mcv article the ps3 was 300k ahead of the 360 in april this year.

Thats enough for me now; i've added enough fuel to the fire
Posted by Black Mantis
I'm very happy to hear that! You obviously missed the title that states; UK sales. The 300k applies to mainland Europe only.
Posted by The_KFD_Case
Given the significant distance between the Xbox 360 and PS3, the PS3 not only has to equal Xobx 360 sales but also has to significantly surpass them just to catch up. Factor in that Sony is still losing money on each PS3 sold and any which way you paint it things are not looking good for Sony on the PS3 front. Neither the Xbox 360 nor the PS3 are in a threatening position against the Wii.
Posted by Tonyb
In actual fact, in the last 12 months the 360 has sold 1.7 million units in the UK compared to only 900,00 PS3's, so it is still getting outsold close on 2-1, not good, they need that price drop soon!

I think that's plenty of fuel!

Lies, damn lies and statistics and all that.

But you are comparing different sets of research. You can't really get any meaningful conclusions or sales trends by comparing April results compiled by Game to the Chart Track results of June.

Oh and not to be TOO anal, but your other stat is wrong too. Using the Chart Track figures the 360 has sold more on average per day than the PS3, but obviously the 360 had the next gen market to itself for a year or more and the PS3 seems to be picking up plenty of momentum - if the 2009/10 game line up leads to improved sales.
Posted by svd_grasshopper
how close would it be if you took away the 360's year odd head start?

then consider the 360 would have more momentum due to it being much cheaper.

and the people talking about sony losing money on each console sold - what about the money microsoft have/are losing due to RROD?! it was in the region of a billion squid.

all things considered its got to be tight - with the ps3 having a price cut in hand. no doubt the xbox will have another price cut, but sony stand to gain more from their slashings.
Posted by lwill
Jesus christ, that's nearly half the population.

In my house, there's only the PS3. To think that puts me below average in the country is a scary thought. I guess it depends if they're counting replacement consoles, because I know a lot of my friends go through PSP's like ruddy snickers bars or something.

I'm surprised going by the stats that the PS3 has sold better month on month and infact, the Wii isn't actually that far ahead of the 360.
Posted by ricflair
Well by my back of a fag packet calculation, the 360 has sold 3.9m/1304 days = 2,990/day. The PS3 has sold 2.2m/828 days = 2,657/day.

They're all home consoles, you just have to look at the sales as they stand. The 360 may be cheaper, but then you pay for xbl. They are less reliable, so that will have hit sales. The 360 won't play HD films out of the box - that's another thing that would hit the 360 sale. The PS3 is more expensive - that's definitely hit sales. The PS brand had much greater brand penetration than xbox.

All I'm saying is that when comparing basic numbers, if you break it up by all the differences between the products and give various levels of importance to said difference, you'll be hard pushed to find any meaningful conclusions.

The answer people seem to want is "How 'well' is each console doing?" and that's pretty subjective. Just because the 360 has sold more does make it the best console for everybody. Just because the PS3 has BR doesn't make it the best option

There will be more research out in a couple of weeks that will be completely different, so there's no point in us all reading too much into things!
Posted by ingy
The head start is not a valid excuse anymore as those sales are now history and in the bank.

The consoles are now selling head to head and the ps3 is still losing out.

If and when the next gen of consoles come around the counting stops then, not a year later so sony can catch up.

@ricflair

here's another link to the same sales figures.
http://www.psu.com/Chart-Track-reveals-UK-lifetime-console-sales-figures--a007019-p0.php

They're both chart-track its just the game actually announced aprils.
Posted by svd_grasshopper
the head start is not valid?! WTF are you smoking!!

these are sales to date - a portion of they sales are from the year plus head start.

how do they not count?! idiot.

they dont count because it had no rival?!

its not a competition - and if it was, im sure an athelete would object to another getting a 100 yard advantage.

these are total sales. all of them count!
Posted by jimmygoogle84
Can't find how much of a lead the 360 had in march 07 when the ps3 was released but in sepetember 07 the sales were:

ps3 0.4m
360 1.3m
wii 1.1m

So the 360 has stretched its lead over the ps3 by 0.8m in just under 2 years but people will point to the pricing being a large factor
Posted by ricflair
Well that's fair enough, the link you provided just said Game has compiled the stats.

Your first post quoting stats from the June chart track release was wrong though!

Hahahhaha....."they don't count cos they had no rival"

What are you smoking man...

listen if you cant bear the fact that your chosen console is not the console of choice for the masses they for god's sake mate stay out of flame war forums like this dude...
god your unreal!

That's right they do all count, so by your own admission sony is well behind.

The point i was trying to make is that both machines will cross the same finishing line together when the next round of consoles start, by whichever company shoots first. It won't matter who had the headstart, total overall sales will be reckoned, afterall, what are you gonna do , subtract the first years sales because you think it's not fair?...grow up.
Posted by ewko117
so by svd's reckoning, we should back date this one and subtract all the sales the ps2 had over the xbox 1 then
hhahaha

I thought the PS3 was beating the 360 in Europe? :?

might want to recheck them sums sonne, at the top of the page it says 3.9m xbox's not 3.3m
thats a change of 0.7m and blows to s**t your ratio's
Posted by The_KFD_Case
Bingo. A new "next gen" console from any of the big three, or a fourth outsider, resets the clock and starts a new round. Currently it does not appear that Sony is picking up the slack since the PS3 would have to do more than just equal Xbox 360 or Wii sales to catch up and *then* begin to pull ahead. The phrase "Oh how the mighty have fallen" comes to mind when comparing the reach of the PS brand from the PS2 to the PS3.
Posted by The_KFD_Case
Only if it purrs at me and asks nicely.

You might be better off considering the immediate alternative...

"""I thought the PS3 was beating the 360 in Europe? :?""

who cares about Europe? this is the UK, the topic is about the UK, stop trying to cover the PS3's failings. the facts are the 360 is beating the PS3 nearly 2 to 1. deal with it!.
so what is the PS3 is closer in Europe? the topic isn't about that because we live in the UK!.

there's no need to sugar coat the PS3 trying to makeit sound better. we all know Sony has gone from first to last!..
