A third team and a new IP will definately be one to watch out for. While id have often been very good technically, in terms of concepts and stories, they're about as schoolboy-ideas or cliche as a game's developer gets. Now they've exhausted their monsters in space/cyborgs in space ideas, I hope this buyout and the potentially larger team means smarter games. It's a shame Doom ended up being another generic space shooter, rather than moving closer to home and being a monsters-from-hell-on-Earth kind of game. Anyway, I don't care what they do, there are enough people making first person shooters, id can take a decade to release a new series or disappear completely for all I care. They're just not important any more and haven't been a market leader for... ever! I'd be quite happy if they had another crack at a proper followup to Quake 3. Balanced weapons, trick jumping, league and ladder support, etc out the box, online front end for profiles like Quake Live, that kind of thing.
A return to the almost gothic, low tech weapons from Quake could be pretty cool too.
Don't get me wrong I'd also welcome a new IP (maybe an RPG, given the circumstances?), but I'd love iD to have another stab at getting back into competetive gaming in a big way :D I think the buyout will be good news if it helps id get games out quicker. Personally I wouldnt like id to change too much from what they do already. I dont crave a deep storyline when I play an id game, just want quality action and fun. |
