Wii Sports Resort scores 94%

A "must-have" says Official Nintendo mag
Nintendo The Official Magazine has published the first Wii Sports Resort review, calling the sequel a "must-have game" for fans of the original and those who want to see what MotionPlus is all about.

Swordplay seems to be one of ONM's favourite activities ("If sword combat in Zelda ends up like this it'll be great") while Table Tennis also gets top honours.

"We weren't expecting much from Table Tennis but it actually works really well," say the mag. "You can put spin on your shots and it's surprisingly realistic. For families this will probably be the new Wii Sports Tennis," it says.

Elsewhere canoeing is a "surprise favourite", jet ski is "really impressive" and Air Sports "feels just like we'd always wanted a Wii Pilotwings to feel". Yes please!

Maybe it is good, but 94% for a mini games compendium?

Oh i dont know i've never played it myself, its just that i've seen games marked down for having a short campaign in the past. seriously, how long is this gonna last? Does it have online?

I always knew those Nintendo boys were into a bit of swordfighting  .

Nintendo wont care what scores this gets, it already knows its going to sell about 20 million this year easy!

Might not be my cup of tea but its good to see Nintendo back on top, I was worried we might have lost them this Gen, how wrong could I have been  .

Well if the official mag reviewed it then it must be true! not saying that the game isn't awesome, but writing that ONM gave a first party game over 90% is hardly earth shattering. That magazine is pure trash always has been, even for an official mag

So reviews are news now?

now if only the Wii was a must-have

i find that i am enjoying the fact that great games are being remade for the Wii like Silent Hill or the Metroid Prime trilogy...new games on the Wii very rarely get me looking up

this is the same, looking forward to getting Resi Evils Wii-makes of the RE-makes

Official Nintendo Mag, Owned by Nintendo, Voting for Nintendo Made Games.

YEP!, THAT'S BELIEVABLE.

What I have found with the Wii is that it does not get many good games, but when they are good, they really are day-1 must-have AAA titles.

Fail. ONM have nothing to do with Nintendo.
Posted by sporkhead
Not surprising, given the magazine gave New Super Mario Bros. 96%. A good game it may be, but it didn't do enough to deserve 96%, a score that would go to the very best games which either push a genre forward or work very well. That game never reached the dizzy creative heights of Super Mario World (ie the freedom of the cape feather, the world map, cheese bridge exit).

Of course I'm writing this on the basis of their New Super Mario Bros. review, not Wii Sports Resort as while it looks good, I can't make a decision on it yet.

I enjoy reading ONM but they have been known to rate the big wii games high regardless. Dont get me wrong im sure its good and all but games like god of war and gears didnt get ratings like that...

I absolutely agree with you there, though NOM (predecessor to ONM) was very decent and gave realistic fair & honest reviews.

Problem is, this game may well be fantastic to this "new generation" of gamers who love all the dancing around like a prat as their idea of entertainment!

I've no problem with Nintendo spreading its wings, but don't forget the people who taught you to fly in the first place ffs!

I've pre-ordered the Sports Resort/Motion+ bundle. Was going to get Grand Slam Tennis on launch day but thought i'll pick it up later for a few quid cheaper as SR represents more bang for me buck. Really enjoyed the original Wii Sports so obviously looking forward to this.Would be nice if it was playable on-line though.

I'll put more stock in the NGamer review.

I'm sure it is a really good game but getting a high score in the OFFICIAL Nintendo magazine ain't nothing to brag about, when they get all the reviews together on Metacritic and it gets 96% I'd be a lot more impressed. Sure some guy was saying that ONM hasn't anything to do with Nintendo but they wouldn't have got the OFFICIAL title and blessing from Nintendo if they gave bad reviews to their (Nintendo's) AAA bread and butter games would they?

The ratings for the game don't concern me a whole hell of a lot. As long as it is decent and is priced around 40 usd or so then I will get it. The first was great fun, though I really think an online function would add so much to these games. It just isn't as fun when there is no real competition there when you are playing. I won't have a problem with paying 40 for this game since it comes with the M+. If it is a really great game then that is just the cherry on top of this sundae.

CVG put a juicy worm in front of me and I can't help but be hooked in.

Every time Nintendo's official magazine goes through a remake or an overhaul with a new editor, they say that "Yes, our reviews before were rubbish. But now, expect serious reviews!"

This is until the new Pokémon game comes out which is an instant classic. Well, it certainly looked like a classic if it was released ten years ago. It might be the wet dream of the guys playing Pong, but it's a static nightmare for the guys playing GTA4. Which is ironic considering that that game looks and plays worse than the original GTA.

So now to this 94% The thing about games magazines and reviewers is that they expect you to take them seriously when they say, "Buy Ico, it's amazing!" or "Buy Okami, it's an understated classic!" but to put Wii Sports Resort in the same category as the underground classics and the blockbuster A listers is insulting.

How can we, the consumer, ever take these journalists seriously when it's obvious that someone has told them to give this game a high score or they'll get the sack.

It's hardly as an innovating sequel to Wii Sports as Mario 64 was to Mario World, or Wind Waker was to Majora's Mask. It adds a new motion plus doo dad which, if anything, is evidence that Nintendo is admitting defeat. They screwed up the original Wiimote by cheaping out the controls so they could sell them for extortionate prices while pocketing all the profits when really, if you want to play properly with your Wii, you HAVE to buy this game to your already expensive console that refuses to go down in price.

And that's what it comes down to. Nintendo don't exist to make games, they exist to make money! If a game has a label of "Guaranteed to make you slimmer" then people are going to buy it.

I expect the next generation of Wii consoles to include "Nintendo Botox" and "Nintendo Length and Girth Extention"

Curse you CVG with your tabloid news! You made me go on that soap box again! I feel proud at least I wasn't one of the over 50 people who replied to the Michael Jackson is Dead article.

i'll throw in my 2 cents. Seeing as i've actually played the game.

Its worthy of the score. I can't count the amount of hours i've clocked up on the sword fighting alone since i got it last week. It definately is a tech demo for the next zelda the island wide fightfest has a very zelda like feel to it. Basically you're armed with a sword and have to fend off wave after wave of increasingly difficult miis, Samurai style.

The table tennis is also a blast as the review states. It is incredibly accurate and works better than the controls for GST in my opinion.

The archery is also a must play simply because it works hoe we all wanted it to in the previous zelda.

Although wiisports resort is essentailly a series of mini games, they are incredibly addictive and fun mini games and alude to other games that Nintendo may have in development. ala the new zelda and pilot wings.

Nintendo first and foremost are a games dev and a bloody good one at that. Just because there isn't any blood, space amrines or guns, dousn't mean that a game isn't going to be an engaging and fun experience. Its not one for the prepubesant run back to my basement and hide from women crowd. but for the rest of us its a great addition to your collection and a great way to get your hands on Motion+.

The only extortionate price on the market is PS3 which refuses to go down in price. The motion plus tech was omitted from the off to keep costs down - Nintendo couldn't have foreseen how successful the Wii was to become - Motion controls were a huge gamble for Nintendo, no-one could predict whether they would be accepted or not, especially on a non-HD console.

but your last comment is really stupid, SONY and Microsoft are also businesses that are there to make money. Thing is Nintendo do exist because they make games and consoles, and they’ve turned a damn-site more profit in that market than any other company.

I for one really can't wait to get my hands on this. I'll have 2 WM+ accessories by then so a friend will be able to play along with me. I can see how this will be giving us a taster of things to come and what is possible with the new control accurracy. Like you say WHERESMYMONKEY, when you mentioned Zelda and Pilotwings. Looking forward to having ago at Tabletennis with a mate :)

If they'd included the tech in motionplus at launch, the price of the console would have been significantly increased due to an inability of mass producing the tech at a low cost at the time, and as such, they probably wouldn't have got as many sales, and it could have been a failure. The price of producing it has since come down, and so they launch an add-on... so kill them.

Yeah, you're right, we need to throw all our support behind those dedicated gaming companies, the TV/Walkman producing Sony, and the PC software company Microsoft, as they are clearly in it for the love of games.
